ABBEY, Edward. Desert Solitaire.
New York: McGraw-Hill (1968). Abbey's first book of nonfiction, a classic of nature writing comparable to Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac , which was instrumental in creating the growing ecological awareness that inspired the modern environmental movement. Subtitled "A Season in the Wilderness" but actually an account that spans several seasons, this book gives the first and clearest indication of Abbey's love for the natural beauty of the Southwest and his contempt for those who would, out of greed or simple ignorance, despoil it. Inscribed by Abbey in 1982. Small label removal abrasion on the front flyleaf and trace wear at the corners; very near fine in a very good, spine-tanned dust jacket with light chipping at the corners. An attractive copy of a modern classic. ABBEY, Edward.

Edward Abbey
"The few such writers whom I wholly admire are those, like Thoreau, who went far beyond simple nature writing to become critics of society, of the state, of our modern industrial culture. . . . It is not enough to understand nature; the point is to save it."Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire "The quality in [Edward Abbey] that I most prize, the one that removes him from the company of the writers I respect and puts him in the company, the smaller company, of the writers I love, is that he sees the gravity, the great danger, of the predicament we are now in, he tells it unswervingly, and he defends unflinchingly the heritage and the qualities that may preserve us. I read him, that is to say, for consolation, for the comfort of being told the truth." Wendell Berry Edward Abbey was born in Home, Pennsylvania in 1927. He was educated at the University of New Mexico and the University of Edinburgh. He died at his home in Oracle, Arizona, in 1989. His nineteen books include:
  • Desert Solitaire
  • The Monkey Wrench Gang
  • Abbey's Road

The American writer Edward Abbey was born in Pennsylvania in 1927.
The son of a farmer, Abbey loved the world around him. He worked as a ranger for much of his life, and his novels (such as The Monkey Wrench Gang and The Brave Cowboy) and non-fiction works (such as Desert Solitaire and Slickrock) have become classics in environmentalist circles.
The actor Kirk Douglas bought a copy of The Brave Cowboy in 1960 and liked it so much that he insisted that Universal Pictures fund a film version. It appeared in cinemas two years later under the title 'Lonely Are The Brave', and starred Douglas himself along with Walter Matthau.
Edward Abbey died at home in 1989 after several spells in hospital. He was buried in the Arizona desert. Abbey once remarked: 'There has never yet been a human society worthy of the name of civilization. Civilization remains a remote ideal.'.

Horsley: We need more irascibles like Edward Abbey
"This is the most beautiful place on earth. There are many such places." Edward Abbey, 1927-1989 David
Horsley
Can it really be almost 10 years since Ed Abbey, that joyful, irascible, combative man who wrote those lines, is said to have died? Mounting evidence notwithstanding, I still find it hard to believe. Yes, I know all about the reports. Hospital reports, funeral reports, false grave sites scattered about Abbey's beloved hills (to throw grave robbers off the trail? Or to increase their sport?) This newspaper printed a brief obituary which now functions nicely as a bookmark. And it's true that his final novel, "The Fool's Progress," had all the marks of being written by a dying man. But all his books had marks of being written by a dying man. A man dying of love, of rage and outrage, of the sheer unutterable beauty of this Earth and the gracefulness of life upon it. Dying, like the pale phantoms in his story "The Brave Cowboy," of nostalgia and loneliness. "Let's keep things like they were," he said. Born and raised in Appalachia during the Depression, Abbey came west as a young man, falling deeply and passionately in love with the Southwest, an area which would serve as the setting for his novels and subject of his essays. He launched a writing career in 1956 with "The Brave Cowboy," a novel later made into the movie, "Lonely Are The Brave," with Kirk Douglas.

Edward Abbey
- A Man Hard To Talk About
By Kent Duryee
Edward Abbey was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, near Home, at the end of a "red dog, dirt road" on January 29, 1927. From this humble beginning in the smoky, shaggy Appalachian hills came one of the most powerful voices of the desert Southwest. Abbey was a writer, philosopher and artist. However, attempts to define Abbey more specifically as an "environmentalist" or "nature writer," or with any other label for that matter, always end in frustration. He was a difficult character to pin down, a loose cannon in the truest sense of the term.
A Man of Contradiction
If nothing else, Abbey exemplified the word "contradiction." Always one to rage against the burgeoning population of the Southwest, Abbey produced five offspring with three of his five wives. An angry defender of wild nature, he often wrote of his penchant for throwing beer cans out of his pickup truck window as he traveled down desert highways. (This was not only a means of measuring distance, he said, but also a protest against the domination of nature by the machine.) Always a champion of the oppressed and marginalized and a foe of industrializing and militarizing the deserts, he nevertheless opposed Mexican immigration into the United States. A liberal, he nevertheless opposed gun control.
Contradictions, however, formed only a small part of the man whose published books include two of the foremost titles in the environmental literature of the 20th century: Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang. With such titles to his credit, along with another 20 or so other publications, one particular statement of his about the desert Southwest comes closest to epitomizing this man of contradictions: "I love it so much that I find it hard to talk about it."
