James Agee - (1909-1955) Knoxville By Rufus Johnson
Tennessee State University in Tennessee I. Biography Tennessee is known for its many diverse authors. An author that is found to be critically diverse is James Rufus Agee. Agee was not only an author; he was also a novelist, poet, journalist, film critic, and screenwriter. Agee was a brilliant man. Agee is best known for his novel, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men , and an unfinished novel, A Death in the Family Agee was born on November 27, 1909, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to his father Hugh James Agee, a tall lanky man, and his mother Laura Agee, an attractive lady with dark hair and large brown eyes. Unfortunately, when Agee was only five years old, a death in the family occurred. His father Hugh Agee was killed in a car accident. Although this death was tragic, it later proved to play a major role in his career. After the death of his father, Agee, his mother and his sister moved to a place near St. Andrews. For five years, Agee attended St. Andrews and he developed his close, lifelong personal relationship with Father Flye. Letters that he wrote to Father Flye throughout his life played a huge part in his life. Agee wrote a novel dealing with the letters which he called Letters to Father Flye In 1931, while attending Harvard University, Agee fell under the influence of Professor I. A. Richards. Professor Richard's theories about using language to embody physical reality greatly affected Agee's writing and helped him to produce

By Jeanie McKenna When asked what he did for a living, James Agee called himself simply a "writer (Kramer 17), but that title doesn't convey the breadth and depth of his talents or the wide range of his concerns. Poet, film critic, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, journalist, social commentator: all of these were Agee's roles in a short but prolific career. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Death in the Family but he also wrote one of the great literary treatments of the poor in America, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (with photographer Walker Evans). Written at the height of the Great Depression, Famous Men chronicles the lives of Alabama tenant farmers and their families whom Agee and Evans visited in 1936. Without condescension and with a poet's eye, Agee's prose (along with Evans' photographs), portrays the dignity and strength in the lives of those most affected by the economic upheaval of the time. Even lesser known perhaps is Agee's work on screenplays, the most famous of which is

Biographical Sketch
James Rufus Agee was born on November 17, 1909, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first of two children. His father, Hugh James Agee, was from rugged farming stock in the mountainous backwoods of Tennessee while Laura Tyler, his mother, had a more educated and artistic background. Her mother, Agee's grandmother, was among the first women to graduate from the University of Michigan. Throughout his life Agee was very aware of the contradictions of this twofold heritage. His mother was a devout Episcopalian and sheltered Agee whereas his father introduced adventure and pleasures such as going to the movies and taking his son to the pubs afterward. As a result, Agee was both timid and daring as a child. The death of Agee's father in an automobile accident in May 1916 was a major turning point in his life. After vacationing near Sewanee, Tennessee, in the summer of 1918, Agee's mother decided to relocate there and enrolled her son at Saint Andrew's, an Episcopalian boarding school, which he attended from 1919-1924. Her reasoning was that it would allow him to be more in the company of men and would provide the religious training and education she felt was important. It had the effect, however, of causing Agee to feel not only cut off from the companionship of his father, but now from his mother as well. It was at Saint Andrew's that Agee formed the close ties with Father James Herold Flye that were to last a lifetime. Agee attended Knoxville High School for the 1924-25 school year and after a trip to Europe with Father Flye in the summer of 1925, he enrolled at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, where his interest in writing first began. Among his writings for the
