Ambiguous Reparations: Iain M. Banks' Look to Windward
Reviewed by John Aegard
S cotland's Iain Menzies Banks is a prolific fellow with a literary double life. He's produced at least one book every year since The Wasp Factory came out in 1984, alternating between "mainstream" fiction (as just plain Iain Banks) and SF (as Iain M. Banks). His latest SF effort, Look To Windward takes us back to the Culture, the space opera utopia introduced over a decade ago in Consider Phlebas and expanded with three sequels since. The Culture is a cozy interstellar society in which everything is plentiful, no one is exploited, and very little is forbidden or even impossible. All of the details of its day-to-day operation are handled by benevolent hyperspace AIs called Minds, leaving its inhabitants free to pursue whatever pleasures they crave. The whimsical hedonism of the Culture is rather convincing quite like Banks has taken the Western world and divorced it even more completely from the indignities of physical want. And remarkably, he's refrained from knocking this obvious target from its sheltered doldrums. Through the eight hundred years covered so far in his novels, the Culture has remained mostly unchanged. This is Banks' primary point of divergence from modern space-opera virtuosos such as Dan Simmons, Vernor Vinge, or Peter Hamilton. The Culture does not exist merely so that it can be violently transformed in the course of a novel. Even Consider Phlebas' cataclysmic Idiran War was never posed as a Culture-changing event. The Minds of that novel had calculated the exact circumstances of their victory well in advance, and, despite billions of tragedies, the Culture as a whole sailed on unaffected.

Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks reviewed by Underview
Original appearance: FTL 7, Winter 1990
Our hero, Cheradenine Zakalwe (not a Bill or a George in sight in this universe), is an agent of the Culture, a group of extra-high-tech aliens with a penchant for meddling, albeit altruistically, in the affairs of other societies. The Culture have featured in Bank's two previous offerings Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games, but this novel stands alone without reference to them. As Zakalwe is a soldier, the meddling we are treated to is all of a military nature. His employers appear to treat him in a rather cavalier fashion, placing him on the losing side as often as not, and allowing him to be horribly mutilated (on one occasion he is pulled out of a mission minus his body from the neck down) in the course of his work. In return they have given him something akin to eternal youth and, most importantly considering the state in which he returns from the majority of his assignments, the best of advanced medical care (especially the time when he had to quit while he was a head).
This is a story failed with exotic weaponry of the ray-gun variety, huge interstellar spaceships and technology that is indistinguishable from magic. But at its code this always remains a novel about people, even though displaying all the trappings of hard SF. Over the course of the book, Zakalwe's past is revealed, interspersed non-chronologically through his latest mission. Slowly a picture of the man emerges, explaining his motives fully only at the very conclusion of the action.

From the Book Jacket:
Iain M. Banks, the international bestselling author of The Player of Games and Consider Phlebas, is a true original, a literary visionary whose brilliant speculative fiction has transported us into worlds of unbounded imagination. Now, in his acclaimed new novel, Banks presents an engrossing portrait of an alien world, and of two very different people bound by a startling and mysterious secret. On a backward world with six moons, an alert spy reports on the doings of one Dr. Vosill, who has mysteriously become the personal physician to the king despite being a foreigner and, even more unthinkably, a woman. Vosill has more enemies than she first realizes. But then she also has more remedies in hand than those who wish her ill can ever guess. Elsewhere, in another palace across the mountains, a man named DeWar serves as chief bodyguard to the Protector General of Tassasen, a profession he describes as the business of "assassinating assassins." DeWar, too, has his enemies, but his foes strike more swiftly, and his means of combating them are more direct.

IT HAD BEEN some time since I'd read any science fiction when my partner started buying the whole series chronologically. Once I read the first I was hooked. Banks has created a very attractive fictional society, the Culture. That it was instantly attractive and obviously anarchist is, perhaps, more interesting because the main character in Consider Phlebas, Horza, is antagonistic towards it. So, we see the first glimpse of this galactic anarchy through the eyes of one who has chosen to fight it. The Culture is a society that has solved all the immediate problems it faces in meeting its citizens' material needs. All work is automated, and artificial intelligences deal with those tasks that need reason to complete, such as running communications on the habitats in space. As a space-faring society, it exhibits many anarchist traits. People are free to leave it, and whole habitats or ships can disfederate at will. In Consider Phlebas, this happens. The Culture takes the momentous decision to go to war against the Idirans, an old-style imperialist set-up, and the Peace Faction splits off. There is no money because there is no need for it. People have advantages fixed into their genes, such as being able to regrow lost limbs and being able to switch off pain. Perhaps of more interest to some people is the ability to change sex at will, and possess drug glands that can be stimulated by thought.

Look To Windward

Iain M. Banks Interview (Jun 1997) This Interview has been provided by Orbit , and is printed with their permission. Iain.M.Banks' latest novel SF novel, Excession , was published in paperback in May. His new non-SF novel, A Song of Stone , was published in hardback in August. In between publicity tours, he took time out to give us a unique insight into one man and his "M"... Your first novel, The Wasp Factory , was described by critics as both "the literary debut of the year" and "a work of unparalleled depravity". How did you feel about those reviews? At the time I was just delighted to have any reviews at all, so the fact that some of them slammed the book didn't matter. The very range of the reactions also kind of innoculated me against the effects reviews might have; as there was no consensus, and people disagreed so utterly whether the book deserved to win heaps of glittering prizes or be burned in bulk at a high temperature, it was hard to take the whole thing seriously. I suppose in the end it's best not to let either kind affect you; believe the glowing reviews and you might get big-headed and self-indulgent and think your work doesn't need editing; believe the bad ones and you might stop writing altogether.

Look to Windward Added 12/10/00 Click here to buy Our Ranking Look to Windward is the latest in a long line of incredible Culture novels by Iain Banks. After reading several other reviews of this, it has become obvious that this is either a love or hate book for Banks fans. I happened to absolutely love it, and wanted so much more when it was finished, but then again I've never been disappointed by a Banks sci-fi novel. Continuing what he seemed to have started with Excession Consider Phlebas first and then maybe moving to this one. Excession Added 12/17/00 Click here to buy Our Ranking Cover is from the UK version which is much cooler looking so much about them. The plot itself, was probably the most sweeping plot Banks has written to date. The sheer magnitude of it also didn't help the books cause. There was no small cause you could really cling to, or root for. Everything was at a massively large, almost cold level. Couple that with the lack of any characters that you could relate to, and after a while you feel like you are reading a history book instead of a novel. Now, don't get me wrong, the plot was still a very interesting one, but it was just way too big. Overall, Excession is my least favorite of all of the Culture books. While it is not a horrible novel (the writing after all is still Banks and therefore incredible) it is truly not his best effort. If you're a fan, and have read all of the other Culture ones, you might as well read this one. However, if you're looking to get introduced to Banks, or have only read one or two Culture books, read the others first.
