After all, it is not where one washes one's neck that counts but where one moistens one's throat. Dreams have only the pigmentation of fact. No man needs curing of his individual sickness; his universal malady is what he should look to. New York is the meeting place of the peoples, the only city where you can hardly find a typical American. Sleep demands of us a guilty immunity. The heart of the jealous knows the best and most satisfying love, that of the other's bed, where the rival perfects the lover's imperfections.

Profile "There is always more surface to a shattered object than a whole." Djuna Barnes to Emily Holmes Coleman Djuna Barnes, Tortured Genius 1892 - 1982 by L. Margaret Pomeroy
The tones and themes that fill the poetry and fiction Djuna Barnes wrote were set early in her life. Born into a dysfunctional New York family in 1892, her childhood was anything but normal. Barnes was born near Cornwall-on-Hudson, growing up there and on a Long Island farm. Her father was Wald Barnes (having chosen his mother’s name over his father’s), an extreme nonconformist who did not work at a real job until after his mother's death when he was in his fifties. Djuna’s mother was Elizabeth Chappell, an English wife who obediently endured her husband’s views, mistresses, and sexual molestation of their daughter. Zadel Turner Barnes , Djuna’s grandmother, also lived in the home, though she would remarry later and live abroad, but her influence on her granddaughter remained strong. In fact letters that she wrote to Djuna were pornographic, implying sexual activity between them, and leaving scholars to wonder if her grandmother, as well as her father, had an incestuous relationship with young Djuna. Also in Djuna’s childhood home were her two younger brothers as well as the mistress of the day and any children she might have had. Barnes’ novel

http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Tower/2839/djuna.html
In the work Djuna Barnes, A Life, the writer undertakes a portrait of a complex and fascinating woman, and one whose flaws are not merely coyly overlooked. Djuna Barnes was born in Cornwall Hudson, New York on June 12, 1892, instructed principally by family, for she never experienced public education save for when she went to New York city as an adult. She was exposed to a range of artistic culture and frequent visitors to her home were John Hudson and Franz Liszt. Thus her temperament was arranged. Her grandmother Zander, a commanding romantic suffragist, was a poet whose works appeared in periodicals from the age of 13. Famous people tended to seek her out and she had a bright array of connections. She was a dedicated romantic suffragist. At times such as during the series of seances Zadel, who exorted a great influence on Djuna's past, believed herself to be posessed. Her marraige to Edgar was a breif-lived one though the five children that bear his inheritance were named quite creatively. Apparently he hurt her sexually and she shuddered at his presence and came to fear sexuality itself. She was re-wed not long after his departure. Djuna received a variety of correspondance, many of these surviving, from her grandmother. The subject of sex was always present in Zadel's drawings and notes to Djuna; in one instance a drawing of her was made with penises placed where her breasts had been; in other letters both her breasts had been referred to as pet names. I believed that the women enjoyed some sexual experimentation such as fondling but did not go farther. These correspondances were read widely by all members of the family, so that Djuna would enjoy a certain freedom of experimentation. Djuna later suggested that she loved her grandmother like a mother.

  • Patience Scalpel è la poetessa Mina Loy (1882-1966), all'epoca forse ancora eterosessuale?
  • Doll Furious è Dorothy Wilde (1899-1941), la nipote di Oscar, una delle amanti della Barney negli anni '20 e '30

    http://rantsravesreviews.homestead.com/Nightwood.html
After reading T.S. Eliot's introduction to Djuna Barnes' novel, Nightwood , I expected a bit more than was actually delivered.
Nightwood is the complex and emotionally disturbing story of Robin Vote, and the men and women she both loves and destroys. As an early example of open writing on homosexuality, Nightwood
The character of Doctor Matthew O'Connor serves as the Greek chorus/comedic relief of the novel, lightening the mood just as one might begin to despair of Robin and her dramatic mood swings, which set her fleeing from whichever lover she was with at the time.
The doctor's monologues are at times repetitive and tedious, other times convoluted and vague, and other times wildly bawdy and crass. Most times, however, the monologues are at least an entertaining and uplifting diversion from the melodrama of Robin and her lovers.
Djuna Barnes has the soul of a poet, and this is evident when the reader gets past the novel's introductory phase (introducing characters, setting, etc.). As an example, the following is from one of the doctor's long monologues, in which he is lecturing one of Robin's cast-off lovers, Nora:
We are but skin about a wind, with muscles clenched against mortality. We sleep in long reproachful dust against ourselves. We are full to the gorge with our own names for misery. Life, the pastures in which the night feeds and prunes the cud that nourishes us to despair. Life, the permission to know death. We were created that the earth might be made sensible of her inhuman taste; and love that the body might be so dear that even the earth should roar with it.

    80. Djuna Barnes' Nightwood
Study Sheet djuna barnes' Nightwood TS Eliot's Introduction, etc. barnes, djuna. Nightwood. New York New Directions, 1937. Herring, Phillip.
    http://www.fandm.edu/Departments/English/d_steward/nightwood.html
    Study Sheet: Djuna Barnes' Nightwood
    T. S. Eliot's Introduction , etc.

Keep in mind Eliot's view that Nightwood "is not a psychopathic study" (xv) during your reading. His assumption that readers might conclude otherwise is probably well founded, but how would you paraphrase his counter-reasoning? Do you agree with his view?
To what extent does Eliot invoke features of Modernism that we have discussed? In your reading of the novel, what Modernist features do you find?
Here are Barnes' thoughts on the title of her novel: "'Nightwood,' like that, one word, it makes it sound like night-shade, poison and night and forest, and tough, in the meaty sense and simple yet singular" (qtd. in Plumb 151). Watch for references to "night" and "wood." How does the title resonate in the novel, especially in "Watchman, What of the Night?"? (You should know that there is a coded biographical element here: Thelma Wood was the woman on whom Barnes based Robin Vote.)
There is some indication in Barnes' letters that she thought Dr. O'Connor was the center of the novel, and Eliot also has high praise for the portrayal of this character. To what extent does he strike you as the center of the novel? Why would Barnes grant this character so much importance when he is not, at least apparently, at the center of the action?
A friend of Barnes, Emily Coleman, suggested that "Most of the book is sentimental shit of the worst kind" (qtd. in Herring 204). Other critics have found the novel satiric, tragic, grotesque, or baroque (or, worse, rococo). What qualities of the novel's style and tone particularly strike you?
