William Bell
U.S. Spy for Poland
A radar specialist at the Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, William Bell was at the end of his financial rope in 1978 when he declared bankruptcy, following a failed marriage. Bell , however, was worth a considerable amount of money to Polish intelligence that worked directly with the KGB in Moscow. Bell had clearance to secret information at Hughes Aircraft , in particular the most sensitive weapons systems then in development for the U.S. Air Force
Bell lived at a posh apartment complex in Playa Del Rey, a fashionable beach community southwest of Los Angeles. Just when he was wondering how he would continue to make ends meet, Bell was befriended by a new neighbor, Marian Zarcharski , a 25-year-old executive who worked for the Polish-American Machinery Company (Polamco) which was headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, just outside Chicago. The youthful, apparently successful Zarcharski , invited Bell to play tennis and the two quickly formed a fast friendship.
When Bell told Zarcharski about his financial woes, he found a willing ear and a helping hand.

A1 William Bell , born ca. 1705. Died 10/29/1783, Paxton Township, Lancaster County, PA. The earliest record of William Bell the Farmer is May 6, 1738 when he is listed as owning a 203 acre farm on Paxton Creek, then Paxton Township, Lancaster County. This farm was located in what is known today as Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, PA. It was in the Bell family until 1796. The stone house built about 1760 was torn down in 1970 to make way for the Progress Avenue exit of Interstate 81. William was likely an Ulster Scot, born in Ireland and came to Paxton from Bucks County as early as 1736. He may have been the nephew of John Bell I who came from Ireland to Bucks County in 1719 and who died in Newtown in 1751. There is no record of William Bell's wife's name, but it was likely Jane. He was an elder of the New Side Presbyterian Church of Paxton. Had Issue:

Biographical Sketch of William Bell Wait,
The Inventor of the New York Point System of Writing for the Blind
From: IN MEMORIAM-William B. Wait Outlook for the Blind,
Autumn, 1916, Vol. X, No. 3, Pages 66-71 William Bell Wait, educator and inventor, was born at Amsterdam, N.Y., March 25, 1839, son of Christopher Brown Wait, 1811-1886, and Betsy Grinnell (Bell) Wait, 1800-1880. His first paternal American ancestor was Thomas Wait, 1601-1677, who came to this country from England, landed at Boston, Mass., in 1634, removed to Rhode Island five years later, where he received a grant of land, and in 1641, was made a freeman at Newport, RI. From him and his wife, the line of descent is traced to Christopher Brown Wait, 1780-1855, and his wife, Polly Van Buren, 1779-1841, who were the grandparents of the subject of this sketch. Mr. Wait became an earnest advocate of his points as the true basis of tangible printing and writing. He concluded that the number of points to be assigned to represent sounds or letters, should be governed by the relative frequency of the sounds or letters respectively as they occurred in general use. In applying the principle to the vertical rectangle of six points, it became apparent that while a small economy in the number of points might be secured, still no saving of space was affected inasmuch as the type body used for a letter of one point must be as large vertically as that containing six points. This led Mr. Wait to adopt four base forms, the type bodies having two points vertically and one, two, three and four horizontally, as here shown: : : : : : : : : : : . After much experiment he devised the New York Point System comprising twenty-six capitals, twenty-six small letters, numerals, punctuation marks and short forms for diphthongs, triphthongs, syllables and for words and parts of words in common use.

ADVANCED SEARCH WILLIAM BELL SCOTT - A NORTHERN PRE-RAPHAELITE AT THE LAING By Jon Pratty, Editor, 24 Hour Museum Left: 'Iron and Coal' Visitors to Newcastle's Laing Art Gallery have a rare opportunity to see northern Pre-Raphaelite artist William Bell Scott's frieze 'The History of Northumbria.' 'William Bell Scott - A Northern Pre-Raphaelite,' at the Laing until March 23, features eight paintings of scenes depicting Northumbrian history as well as two watercolours, 'Dunstanburgh' and 'Brinkburn', by JMW Turner. The eight Pre-Raphaelite paintings are normally seen at Wallington House in Northumberland. The paintings hang in the house's central hall where they fit between arches on the walls creating a frieze that circles the room. Right: 'Building the Roman Wall' The six feet square works were originally commissioned in 1856 by Pauline and Walter Trevelyan to decorate the central hall of Wallington. The National Trust, who care for the house, have loaned the frieze to the Laing during the closure of the Hall for conservation and repair work. The William Bell Scott frieze tells the story of Northumbria from the building of Hadrian's Wall to the growth of industrial Tyneside and is the centrepiece to Wallington's Pre-Raphaelite decorative scheme.

Bell Labs Presidents
William O. Baker
William Baker was president as Bell Labs researchers won Nobel Prizes in physics for the improved understanding of the electronic structure of glass and magnetic materials and for discovering background radiation remaining from the big bang that created the universe billions of years ago. Advances in lasers and glass fiber led to the first operational fiber-optic system. Bell Labs developed the C programming language, the toll switch, and out-of-band signaling. Next:

God of Beer
Keizer, Garret
HarperCollins After a discussion in class about Ghandi and his comments on how if God came to India, the only meaningful way would be to come as bread, the teacher asks the class in what form God would have to come to their rural Vermont high school. Kyle blurts out beer. His friends Quaker Oats, a non-drinking pacifist and Diana LaValley, a six foot four star basketball player think it is brilliant. They decide to start a protest movement to lower the drinking age, raise the drinker's awareness, destroy the non-drinker's stigma. Meanwhile David, a backwoods hunting friend of Kyle, who is the oldest student at the highschool and in special ed comes into conflict with Diana's drunken former Californian boyfriend. Kyle has never been able to let Diana know that he is in love with her. They consider each other to be siblings. Then a terrible tragedy stikes the community. Activism seems to be reappearing in teen lit. I suspect that fans of The Gospel According to Larry will find much to enjoy and ponder in this book.
