Canetti, Elias, * 25. 7. 1905 Rustschuk (Ruse, Bulgarien Schweiz Canetti .

ELIAS CANETTI, 89
WON NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE
Author: Associated Press Date: Friday, August 19, 1994
Page: Section: OBITUARY ZURICH Elias Canetti, the reclusive writer who won the 1981 Nobel Prize in literature, died Sunday. He was 89. Mr. Canetti, a Bulgarian-born British citizen who wrote in German, was buried Wednesday in Zurich beside Irish author James Joyce. He went into seclusion after he won the prize. Mr. Canetti began writing dramas and novels in the early 1930s, but developed a wide following among German readers only in 1960 with the publication of the first volume of his major work, "Masse und Macht" (Crowds and Power). A nightmarish novel, "Die Blendung" (Auto da Fe), which he wrote in the early 1930s, was not published in Vienna until 1963. But his drama, "Die Hochzeit" (The Wedding), was published in 1932, and two years later he completed his "Komodie der Eitelkeit" (Comedy of Vanity). He was born on July 25, 1905, in Rustchuk, Bulgaria. In 1911, he moved with his parents to Manchester, England. When his father died two years later, he moved to Vienna, where he attended school before continuing his education in Zurich and Frankfurt.

REVIEW BOOK
THE INNER LIFE OF ELIAS CANETTI
Author: By Robert Taylor Globe Staff Date: Wednesday, September 22, 1982
Page: Section: LIVING THE TORCH IN MY EAR, by Elias Canetti, translated by Joachim Neugroschel. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 371 pp. $16.50. The second volume of Elias Canetti's odd yet oddly compelling memoirs distills the moral force of high Central European culture of which he is a noble example. He also conveys the confinement and oppressive weight of that tradition. Profound, passionate, highly readable, his memoir, in the style of much mid-European thought, displays a dense and abstract texture. Canetti's has been an unusual career. Surprise winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize, he is the author of disparate masterworks: "Auto-da-Fe," titled in German "Die Blendung," or "The Blinding"- a reference to the blinding of Samson - an acute, dark novel concerning the motives of fascism; and of "Crowds and Power," a brilliant study of the psychology of mass phenomena. The memoirs are not in this class. They are episodic, of high quality, but too discursive as a whole. The English translation is barely adequate; the independence of Canetti's mind struggles against the prosiness of the text. The title proclaims the range of the author's intellect on three symbolic levels: "The Torch In My Ear," expresses the conversion of sight into sound, the writer's craft; moreover, "The Torch" was the journal of Karl Kraus, the fearless Viennese critic of society and language whose presence is germane here. Much of Canetti's life during the '20s consisted of a continuous inner dialogue and debate with Kraus, his spiritual father. Finally, the title carries overtones of July 15, 1927, the burning of the Palais of Justice witnessed by Canetti, influencing his study of crowd behavior and presaging the destructive historical fires that leap through the pages of "Auto-da-Fe," destined to consume Europe.

Press Release: The Nobel Prize for Literature 1981
Elias Canetti
Born in 1905, in the port of Rustschuk on the lower Danube, Elias Canetti
When surveyed, Elias Canetti's literary work may seem split up, comprising as it does of so many genres. His oeuvre consists of a novel, three plays, several volumes of notes and aphorisms, a profound examination of the origin, structures and effect of the mass movement, a travel book, portraits of authors, character studies, and memoirs; but these writings, pursued in such different directions, are held together by a most original and vigorously profiled personality.
The exiled and cosmopolitian author, Canetti has one native land, and that is the German language. He has never abandoned it, and he has often avowed his love of the highest manifestations of the classical German culture. He has warmly emphasized what Goethe, for instance, has meant to him as medicina mentis
His foremost purely fictional achievement is the great novel

Canetti, Elias
Canetti Horst Tappe/Camera Press/Globe Photos (b. July 25, 1905, Ruse, Bulg.d. Aug. 13, 1994, Zurich, Switz.), Bulgarian novelist and playwright whose works explore the emotions of crowds, the psychopathology of power, and the position of the individual at odds with the society around him. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. Canetti's interest in crowds crystallized from the witnessing of street rioting over inflation that he saw in Frankfurt in the 1920s, which culminated in 1927 with the burning of the Vienna Palace of Justice by an angry mob. A planned eight-novel saga of the madness he saw around him was reduced to Die Blendung or The Tower of Babel ). It tells the story of a scholar's degradation and destruction in the grotesque underworld of a city. Shortly before World War II, Canetti immigrated to England and put aside literature to devote his time to research on mass psychology and the allure of fascism. The book-essay Masse und Macht Crowds and Power ) is an outgrowth of that compelling interest, which is also evident in Canetti's three plays
