Chaucer greatly admired Dante, whom he frequently cites and sometimes quotes in a manner that seems to show he had some parts of the Divine Comedy by heart. The prayer to the Virgin at the beginning of the Paradiso, which Dante derived from St. Bernard, seems to have been Chaucer's favorite passage in the Divine Comedy ; he quotes it in the Prioress' Tale (VII.474-80; see note in The Riverside Chaucer , p. 914) and he uses it in a purely secular sense in Tr 3 1261-67 (see note in The Riverside Chaucer , p. 1042). He adapts it for the "Invocation to the Virgin" that is part of the introduction to The Second Nun's Tale: Paradiso, Canto 33, 1-39 Dante's Letter to Can Grande contains an important explanation of the "allegorical method" of literary interpretation, which Dante apparently (the authenticity of the letter has been questioned) wanted to be used in reading his Divine Comedy , or at least the Paradiso , a copy of which he sent to Can Grande with his letter: Dante's Letter to Can Grande Chaucer also uses the account of Hugolino of Pisa (from Canto 33 of The Inferno in his Monk's Tale: Ugolino of Pisa In the Wife of Bath's Tale, Chaucer draws upon Dante's

Biography of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)
Dante is one of the greatest poets in the Italian language; with the comic story-teller Boccaccio and the poet Petrarch, he forms the classic trio of Italian authors. Dante Alighieri was born in the city-state Florence in 1265. He first saw the woman, or rather the child, who was to become the poetic love of his life when he was almost nine years old and she was some months younger. In fact, Beatrice married another man, Simone di' Bardi, and died when Dante was 25, so their relationship existed almost entirely in Dante's imagination, but she nonetheless plays an extremely important role in his poetry. Dante attributed all the heavenly virtues to her soul and imagined, in his masterpiece The Divine Comedy, that she was his guardian angel who alternately berated and encouraged him on his search for salvation. Dante never returned to Florence. He wandered from city to city, depending on noble patrons there. Between 1302 and 1304 some attempts were made by the exiled Whites to retrieve their position in Florence, but none of these succeeded and Dante contented himself with hoping for the appearance of a new powerful Holy Roman Emperor who would unite the country and banish strife. Henry VII was elected Emperor in 1308, and indeed laid seige to Florence in 1312, but was defeated, and he died a year later, destroying Dante's hopes. Dante passed from court to court, writing passionate political and moral epistles and finishing his Divine Comedy, which contains the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. He finally died in Ravenna in 1321.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dante Alighieri ) was a Florentine poet. His greatest work, La Divina Commedia The Divine Comedy ), is a culminating statement of the medieval world view and the basis of the modern Italian language
    Life
Dante was born into a prominent Florentine family (whose real surname was Alaghieri), with loyalties to the Guelfs , a political alliance involved in complex opposition to the Ghibellines ; Guelfs themselves were divided into White Guelfs and Black Guelfs. Dante pretended that his family descended from the ancient Romans (Inferno, XV, 76), but the earliest relative he can mention by name is Cacciaguida degli Elisei (Paradiso, XV, 135), of no earlier than about 1100.

    Dante Alighieri
Italian poet, born at Florence, 1265; died at Ravenna, Italy, 14 September, 1321. His own statement in the "Paradiso" (xxii, 112-117) that he was born when the sun was in Gemini, fixes his birthday between 18 May and 17 June. During his exile from Florence he sought and received refuge and protection from a branch of the Malaspina family in Mulazzo and pays tribute to this in his Purgatorio
Already Dante had written his first book, the "Vita Nuova", or "New Life", an exquisite medley of lyrical verse and poetic prose, telling the story of his love for Beatrice, whom he had first seen at the end of his ninth year. Beatrice, who was probably the daughter of Folco Portinari, and wife of Simone de' Bardi, died in June, 1290, and the "Vita Nuova" was completed about the year 1294. Dante's love for her was purely spiritual and mystical, the amor amicitiae defined by St. Thomas Aquinas : "That which is loved in love of friendship is loved simply and for its own sake". Its resemblance to the chivalrous worship that the troubadours offered to married women is merely superficial. The book is dedicated to the Florentine poet, Guido Cavalcanti, whom Dante calls "the first of my friends", and ends with the promise of writing concerning Beatrice "what has never before been written of any woman".
A few years before his exile Dante had married Gemma di Manetto Donati, a distant kinswoman of Corso, by whom he had four children. He never saw his wife again; but his sons, Pietro and Jacopo, and one of his daughters, Beatrice, joined him in later years. At first, he made common cause with his fellow-exiles at Siena

Dante Alighieri is beyond doubt the greatest of Italian poets, and, many readers think, one of the greatest poets that Western civilization has produced. W B Yeats called him "the chief imagination of Christendom." T S Eliot said: "Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them. There is no third." He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. Italy in those days was not a united country, but a collection of mostly small city-states. Feuds and power struggles between noble families were a constant source of wars between states and of turmoil and civil war within them. Dante, heir of a poor but noble family, was one of the seven elected officials in charge of the government of Florence, when an accidental collision in the street during the May Festival in 1300 led to a brawl that escalated into a civil war that ultimately got Dante's party overthrown and its leaders (including Dante) exiled from Florence. He spent the rest of his life in exile, pining for his native city. In 1293 he published a book called the Vita Nuova ("The New Life"), in which he relates how he fell in love with a young girl (Beatrice), and found his chief happiness in thinking of her, and looking at her from afar. In 1304 or shortly thereafter he published

At the age of nine, Dante was introduced to Bice, or Beatrice, Portinari in 1274. According to studies by Boccacio, her death in 1290 propelled him to begin an intensive study in the philosophical works of Boethius, Cicero, and Aristotle. In fact, Beatrice is alluded to in several of his other works but specifically The Divine Comedy where she is commemorated as the ideal lady who guides him to redemption in Paradiso . However, it is often criticized that Beatrice was actually a term that Dante used as a representative of the perfect, holy female. Nonetheless, the death urged Dante to break free from his earlier directed writing style and establish his own style in innovative canzoni, or lyrical poems.

DANTE ALIGHIERI Poet An exiled and wandering figure during his writing lifetime, Dante is now considered Italy's greatest poet so much a literary giant that he is generally known by his first name alone. The Divine Comedy , by far his most famous work, is the story of a journey through Hell, Purgatory and finally Paradise. (The journey through Hell is often referred to independently as "Dante's Inferno .") In the poem the first two stages are guided by the Roman poet Virgil , and the final visit to Paradise is led by a woman named Beatrice a girl Dante met briefly when he was nine and whom he idolized he rest of his life. The Divine Comedy is the source of many famous classical images, including many works by William Blake , and is famous for its inscription on the gates of Hell: "All hope abandon, ye who enter here."
Extra credit : Dante named his work La commedia , or The Comedy . After his death others added "Divine" to make it La divina commedia
