The Pastor as Theologian Reflections on the Ministry of Jonathan Edwards Bethlehem Conference for Pastors April 15, 1988 My topic is "The Pastor as Theologian, Reflections on the Life and Ministry of Jonathan Edwards." One of Edwards' books, written back in 1742, was recently reissued with an Introduction by Charles Colson. Colson wrote, I assume that you are among that number who love and obey Christ and who long for your prayers and your work to prevail over unbelief and evil in your churches and your communities and eventually in the world. And I believe that Colson is right that Edwards has a challenge for us that can help us very much, not only in his message, but also in his life as a pastor-theologian. The Real Jonathan Edwards Most of us don't know the real Jonathan Edwards. We all remember the high school English classes or American History classes. The text books had a little section on "The Puritans" or on "The Great Awakening." And what did we read? Well, my oldest son is in the 9th grade now and his American History text book has one paragraph on the Great Awakening, which begins with the sentence that goes something like this: "The Great Awakening was a brief period of intense religious feeling in the 1730's and '40's which caused many churches to split." And for many text books, Edwards is no more than a gloomy troubler of the churches in those days of Awakening fervor. So what we get as a sample of latter-day Puritanism is an excerpt from his sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Perhaps one like this

Here he exerted considerable influence on the religious development of the early American colonies, partly because of his dynamic style and partly because it was the most important Massachussetts pulpit outside of Boston. Scholars generally consider his preaching to have been the spark which lead to the first "Great Awakening" (1735-1735), a grassroots religious revival movement which redefined American religion for decades to come. Edwards was very dogmatic and conservative in his Calvinist beliefs; however, his commitment to traditional Calvinism was not an unthinking loyalty - over many years he had struggled with objections to the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, for example, although he did finally reach a conclusion which satisfied him.

INTRODUCTION The consideration of these things has long engaged me to attend to this matter, with the utmost diligence and care, and exactness of search and inquiry, that I have been capable of. It is a subject on which my mind has been peculiarly intent, ever since I first entered on the study of divinity. But as to the success of my inquiries it must be left to the judgment of the reader of the following treatise. Not that it is to be supposed that it will always be so; for though there never will, in this world, be an entire purity, either in particular saints, in a perfect freedom from mixtures of corruption; or in the church of God, without any mixture of hypocrites with saints, and counterfeit religion, and false appearances of grace with true religion, and real holiness: yet it is evident, that there will come a time of much greater purity in the church of God, than has been in ages past; it is plain by these texts of Scripture, Isa. 52:1. Ezek. 44:6, 7, Joel 3:17.  Zech. 14:21. Psal. 69:32, 35, 36. Isa 35:8, 10, chap. 4:3, 4.  Ezek. 20:38. Psal. 37:9, 10, 21, 29. And one great reason of it will be that at that time God will give much greater light to his people, to distinguish between true religion and its counterfeits.

Papers from Hillsdale College (1998) REL 319 Eighteenth Century Theology: Jonathan Edwards and American Puritanism Jonathan Edwards on Nature by Shannon Green Edwards defines the concept of "beauty" in numerous ways; the one most pertinent to this topic is found in his treatise "The Mind:" All beauty consists in similarness . . . so in every case, what is called correspondency, symmetry, regularity and the like, may be resolved into equalities . . . it would be a most tedious piece of work to enumerate them. There are millions of these equalities. Of these consist the beautiful shape of flowers, the beauty of the body of man and of the bodies of other animals." (24-25). This sort of beauty can only be found in God's creation; it transcends any product of mankind. Edwards describes in eloquent detail the accordance of beauty in nature: "great suitableness between the objects of different senses, as between sounds, colors, and smells . . . how a resemblance, I say, of every grace and beautiful disposition of mind; of an inferior towards a superior cause, preserver, benevolent benefactor, and fountain of happiness." ("Beauty of the World," 14-15). One might wonder, however, just how Edwards decides which analogies actually work. He clearly defines his concept of beauty, he efficiently catagorizes this concept into the unmistakable and the clandestine, and he gives plenty of analogies throughout his body of work that make sense and seem correct. But how exactly does one make sure that an analogy rings true?
