TIME 100: Artists and Entertainers: T.S. Eliot
REVIEW: The Time biography of Eliot has been written by Helen Vendler and comprises four pages of online text. Vendler discusses Eliot's work and, specifically, The Waste Land, which she regards as having been the first 'Euro-Poem'. Eliot's relevance for performing arts is all too apparent in the work of companies such as the Wooster Group. This piece raises some important issues although it is not intended to focus these through performance work. There are links to online resources and a link to contact the editor.

The story below details the life of crimefighter Eliot Ness. "Eliot Ness

To many, the name Eliot Ness conjures visions of Al Capone, tommy gun

black & white TV classic series, "The Untouchables."
That character is largely a myth. Nevertheless, the accomplishments of the
real Eliot Ness were no less fascinating. Ness, a Chicago native, will be in the spotlight on Aug. 24, as The History

    Biography of T. S. Eliot
Eliot has been one of the most daring innovators of twentieth-century poetry. Never compromising either with the public or indeed with language itself, he has followed his belief that poetry should aim at a representation of the complexities of modern civilization in language and that such representation necessarily leads to difficult poetry. Despite this difficulty his influence on modern poetic diction has been immense. Eliot's poetry from Prufrock (1917) to the Four Quartets (1943) reflects the development of a Christian writer: the early work, especially The Waste Land (1922), is essentially negative, the expression of that horror from which the search for a higher world arises. In Ash Wednesday (1930) and the Four Quartets this higher world becomes more visible; nonetheless Eliot has always taken care not to become a "religious poet". and often belittled the power of poetry as a religious force. However, his dramas Murder in the Cathedral (1935) and The Family Reunion (1939) are more openly Christian apologies. In his essays, especially the later ones, Eliot advocates a traditionalism in religion, society, and literature that seems at odds with his pioneer activity as a poet. But although the Eliot of

    Introduction
    Early Years
Thomas Stearns Eliot was born on September 26, 1888, in St. Louis, Missouri, the seventh and last child of Henry Ware Eliot, a brick manufacturer, and Charlotte (Stearns) Eliot, who was active in social reform and was herself a not-untalented poet. Both parents were descended from families that had emigrated from England to Massachusetts in the seventeenth century. William Greenleaf Eliot, the poet's paternal grandfather, had, after his graduation from Harvard in the 1830s, moved to St. Louis, where he became a Unitarian minister, but the New England connection was closely maintainedespecially, during Eliot's youth, through the family's summer home on the Atlantic coast in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Eliot attended Miss Locke's Primary School and Smith Academy in St. Louis. His first poems and prose pieces appeared in the Smith Academy Record in 1905, the year of his graduation. He spent the 1905-1906 academic year at Milton Academy, a private prep school in Massachusetts, and then entered Harvard University, beginning his studies on September 26, 1906, his eighteenth birthday. There, he published frequently in the Harvard Advocate , took courses with such professors as Paul Elmer More and Irving Babbitt, the latter of whom influenced Eliot through his classicism and emphasis upon tradition, and also studied the poetry of Dante, who would prove to be a lifelong source of enthusiasm and inspiration.

    George Eliot
A WOMAN IN ADVANCE OF HER TIME A Short Pen Picture by Kathleen Adams A farmhouse tucked away within the park at Arbury Hall near Nuneaton was the birthplace of Mary Ann Evans in 1819. Her father Robert Evans was agent to the Newdegate family at Arbury and when Mary Ann was four months old the family moved to Griff House on the edge of the estate. Here Mary Ann had a very happy childhood with her pretty sister Chrissey and her beloved brother Isaac. She and Chrissey went to boarding school in Nuneaton until Mary Ann was moved, at the age of 13, to a boarding school in Coventry at 29 Warwick Row. She did very well at the Coventry school and remained there until she was 16. At this point her mother died and Mary Ann was with the family at Griff at this sad time. She and Chrissey ran the house between them although it is clear that Robert Evans relied upon his youngest daughter in many things, particularly when Chrissey married and went to live at Meriden. Mary Ann had been a bright scholar at all of her schools and was now having lessons from teachers who went out to Griff from Coventry and Leamington. Robert Evans retired to Coventry in 1841, taking Mary Ann with him and leaving Isaac at Griff to take over his father's job at Arbury. A new life was beginning for Mary Ann at their new home at Foleshill and she was making new and influential friends, including the Coventry ribbon manufacturer, Charles Bray and his wife Caroline who lived at 'Rosehill' on Radford Road. In their home Mary Ann met men of letters the like of whom she would never have met in Nuneaton, and in a stimulating intellectual circle she blossomed, writing articles for Bray's Coventry Herald newspaper. The previously devout Mary Ann had already had religious doubts and in this new circle she realised her faith had gone. She refused to attend Holy Trinity Church with her father, causing great distress within her family, only resolved because of the pain she was causing her father. She went back to church with him but reserved the right to think her own thoughts during the service!
