By Joshua Klein Bret Easton Ellis' first book, Less Than Zero , was published when the author was only 21 and still a student at Bennington College in Vermont. The novel, which tackled sex and drugs among rich whites in Los Angeles, became a best-seller, as did its follow-up, The Rules Of Attraction , which tackled sex and drugs among rich white collegians in New York. However, despite all the early attention, it was Ellis' third novel, American Psycho American Psycho and the recent Glamorama , Ellis' only release was a collection of retooled short stories, The Informers. The Onion recently met up with the writer to discuss the seemingly belated introduction of plot to his writing, the upcoming American Psycho movie, and his reputation as the bad boy of literature. The Onion: I was surprised to learn that you don't use your middle name in your daily business. Bret Easton Ellis: Well, you know, I don't. It's not on any of my checks; it's not on my tax forms or anything like that. It was something that, when I was very young and very pretentious and just starting out as a writer, I thought I needed. My mentor, my professor at Bennington, when I gave him my final draft of Less Than Zero , noticed that the manuscript had "Bret Easton Ellis" on it. And he said, "What is this? Why do you have your middle name on this? That is so pretentious. Take the Easton out." I didn't listen to him, but he also thought

Interview with Bret Easton Ellis
by Mark Amerika and Alexander Laurence
(c) 1994 Mark Amerika and Alexander Laurence Bret Easton Ellis is the author of four controversial novels including Less Than Zero The Rules of Attraction American Psycho , and The Informers . He grew up in Los Angeles where he played keyboards for many new wave groups, hung out in the LA punk scene, and now is often nostalgic for that time in the early 1980s. He wrote a few novels at an early age, made it fashionable to go to Bennington, and eventually moved to New York City. He was often attacked for the intolerable violence in his novels, his character's passivity, and his generally "devoid of morals" esthetic, especially in 1991's American Psycho which was so violent that one publisher refused to publish it. Presently, Ellis has been working on a novel about the fashion world and supermodels. So watch out! Mark Amerika: How did you come to write The Informers ? Where did it come from? Did you write this right after American Psycho Bret Easton Ellis: It was written over a ten year period of time. I started working on it in 1983 and I finished it last August. It was 50% longer. It was the project I could go to, with no intention of ever publishing it, whenever I got major writer's block with the other novels. I would go back to this book which seemed to be about a group of people that criss-crossed paths in Los Angeles. That would relax and loosen me up, whenever I got stuck or tripped over someone's voice in one of my other novels.

"Patrick Bateman is twenty-six and works on Wall Street; he is handsome, sophisticated, charming and intelligent. He is also a psychopath. American Psycho is a bleak, bitter, black comedy about a world we all recognize but do not wish to face and it takes us to a head-on collision with America's greatest dream - and its worst nightmare."

Bret Easton Ellis on Hotwired 29 September 1995 Bret Easton Ellis , of late-'80s literary brat-pack notoriety, has resonated controversy ever since his first novel, Less Than Zero , was published during his senior year at Bennington College in 1985. Ellis went on to write American Psycho in 1991, a scathing critique of nihilistic excess and '80s' greed, which focused further negative attention on the author - including boycotts and death threats; threats, according to Ellis, like "being raped with a nail-studded baseball bat. It was worse than a lot of the stuff in American Psycho The Informers is Ellis's latest book, described in his own words as "a kaleidoscopic and fractured view of Los Angeles in the early '80s," and it's every bit as violent and depraved as his previous works. baphomet asks: When will we hear from Donna Tartt again? I understand you know her. Ellis: She's working on a new book. I know she has a contract to deliver it soon to her publishers. A murder mystery. alexadroog asks: I've noticed in the majority of your books, you write about experiences and the usage of narcotics. What is your interest with them and how do you know so much about them? Ellis: I don't really know that much about narcotics. At least not more than the average young American. But I think that doing or trying drugs is a right of passage amongst the American youth, as much as the SATs, drivers licenses, etc. Drugs just seem to be something my characters like to do. But I'm really not that interested in them, at least not on the same level as Burroughs.

In his inimitable style, Bret Easton Ellis has ventured into uncharted, taboo territory for years. His books portray a perverse blend of fortune, fantasy and deep-rooted human flaw, a world whose inhabitants constantly walk the line between sanity and obsession. With Less Than Zero Ellis introduced the younger generation of Los Angeles' privileged, troubled class; The Rules of Attraction gave readers a glimpse into the twisted world of small, Northeastern college life; in American Psycho one witnessed the shocking fusion of money and angst in the 1980s, as manifested in a main character obsessed with style and consumed by arbitrary vengeance. This definitive satire rivals both Bonfire of the Vanities and Spy magazine as the final word on the decade of excess.
Glamorama , Ellis's latest vehicle, ventures deep inside the world of celebrity, a world that jet-sets from coast-to-coast, from champagne flute to vial of cocaine, all the while sacrificing humanity for image. The reader follows the protagonist as his life spirals out of control, as he goes from model-slash-icon-slash-club promoter to unwitting witness to an international terrorism ring. The result is pure Bret Easton Ellisa world that is at once ironic and glamorous, enviable and terrifying. No matter how scrupulous and saintly one feels next to Ellis's characters, these characters are undeniably entertaining. Ellis's artfully-drawn satires continue to reflect his uncanny power of observation toward contemporary society.

GLAMORAMA
By Bret Easton Ellis
Love him or hate him - and there doesn't seem to be much middle ground - you have to admit Bret Easton Ellis knows how to provoke a reaction. Depending on one's source, he is either one of the most talented writers of his generation, or a mere publicity-seeking poseur. His last novel, 1991's brilliant but disturbing American Psycho , even managed to get widely banned - no small feat in this jaded age. His reputation as the bad boy of American letters is easy to explain: Ellis is a satirist in an age that does not accept satire. Of course the urbane wit of a Wolfe or a McEwan is still allowed, but the best satire has some anger in it and, if successful, should offend. Glamorama begins with a fast-paced social comedy sending up Manhattan's hectically empty celebrity scene. The hero, Victor Ward, is a male model with a sexy smile, cubed abs, and part of a degree in experimental orchestra. He can recite the exact length, in seconds, of every pop song ever recorded, but doesn't know the difference between a platypus and a platitude ("One's a . . . beaver?" he attempts). Contacted by a mysterious stranger who seems to have wandered out of a Pynchon novel, our himbo hero is offered a bundle of cash to go to England on a secret mission that has something to do with a former girlfriend. Nothing, however, is what it seems, and soon poor Victor is sucked into a nightmare world of high fashion, international terrorism, and global conspiracies.

Did you know? Less Than Zero was published while he was still a student. Critical verdict His early, showily empty novellas, in which he spoke (or didn't speak) for one of the many generations X, were superseded by the American Psycho controversy/publicity campaign - fading with time and the interesting critical proposition that the antihero doesn't actually rape and mutilate, he merely thinks about it. With Glamorama - more flat-affect high life, designer labels and disgust, but with the addition of an emotional tone and some narrative pace - his star has risen again. Recommended works Glamorama, though the force of his satire sometimes overwhelms its object, is the most layered and achieved thing he's written.
