Index Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald's life resembles a fairy tale. During World War I, Fitzgerald enlisted in the U.S. Army and fell in love with a rich and beautiful girl, Zelda Sayre, who lived near Montgomery, Alabama, where he was stationed. Zelda broke off their engagement because he was relatively poor. After he was discharged at war's end, he went to seek his literary fortune in New York City in order to marry her. His first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), became a best- seller, and at 24 they married. Neither of them was able to withstand the stresses of success and fame, and they squandered their money. They moved to France to economize in 1924 and returned seven years later. Zelda became mentally unstable and had to be institutionalized; Fitzgerald himself became an alcoholic and died young as a movie screenwriter. Fitzgerald's secure place in American literature rests primarily on his novel The Great Gatsby (1925), a brilliantly written, economically structured story about the American dream of the self-made man. The protagonist, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, discovers the devastating cost of success in terms of personal fulfillment and love. Other fine works include

The Use of Setting in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Fiction
"This first full-length study of Fitzgerald’s domestic and urban settings not only traces the changing pattern in his artistry but also restructures the scope and depth his representation of the Jazz Age America. Exploring his parabolic imagery of home, bars, schools, city, and Hollywood, the book shows how his setting contributes toward the thematic profundity and aesthetic richness in his writing."

    Introduction
This book analyzes an essential, but relatively uncultivated, part of the artistry in Fitzgerald’s fiction: his use of domestic and urban settings. Through exploring the imagery of home, bars, schools, city, and Hollywood, Fitzgerald presents a panoramic view of the social and psychological landscape of his time, a view that is philosophically adequate and aesthetically satiating.

    http://www.zeldafitzgerald.com/fitzgeralds/index.asp
The names, "Scott and Zelda," have become immediately recognizable to people throughout the world, many of whom have never read any of F. Scott Fitzgerald's fiction. They have become a fabled couple, legends of a bygone era, the embodiment of the triumph and tragedy that afflicted the decade with which they are most associated, the 1920s. That they were charming and extraordinarily beautiful has added a tragic dimension to their story; like the subjects of one of Fitzgerald's novels, they seem the embodiment of "the beautiful and damned." That Fitzgerald achieved a posthumous resurrection as a great American novelist does not make the sadness of their lives any the less poignant. Indeed, if anything, it etches ever more clearly in our minds, the pathos of their last days. This brief look at their lives may help us to understand this extraordinary couple, their lives, their work, their great love for one another, and their legacy to future generations. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born at 481 Laurel Avenue, in St. Paul, Minnesota on 24 September 1896. His parents were Edward and Mollie (McQuillan). The Fitzgeralds had lost two children in infancy before their son was born, and Fitzgerald recalled his mother's anxiety concerning his health throughout his childhood. (His mother was notably eccentric in dress and mannerisms, causing young Scott some distress during his childhood.) His father's family was originally from Maryland, but settled in St. Paul after the Civil War. His mother's ancestors were Irish immigrants who settled in the St. Paul area and became wealthy as wholesale grocery merchants.

Audio What we know of that unique period in American history labeled the Jazz Age has been defined by F. Scott Fitzgerald's piercing fiction. His short stories brilliantly realize an era both exploding with opportunity and seething with decadence. His prose captures the melancholy lacquered over with merriment, the corruption interlaced with the glamour, all refracted through a spectrum of human lives. Here, Caedmon has assembled an extraordinary cast of stage and screen stars to bring Fitzgerald's early work to resonant life. His characters (some passionate, some comic, some tragic) take on an extra dimension when interpreted aloud by these fine actors. This collection both honors and enhances Fitzgerald's already irreplaceable position in American letters. Each return listening will bring even more emotional impact to each story.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Written in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is often referred to as "The Great American Novel," and as the quintessential work which captures the mood of the "Jazz Age."
Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and educated at Princeton, although he dropped out to join the army before he completed his degree. Stationed near Montgomery, Alabama, he met and later married Zelda Sayre, a high-strung woman from a family more prominent than his own. His first novel, This Side of Paradise , published in 1920. was a tremendous critical and commercial success. Fitzgerald followed with The Beautiful and the Damned in 1922, The Great Gatsby in 1925, Tender is the Night (1934), and was working on The Last Tycoon (1941) when he died, in Hollywood, in 1940.
    Questions to Think About:
    1) Who do you think the characters in The Great Gatsby represent? Do they seem like real people? Which characters seem the most real to you?
    2) What is the symbolism of the green light that appears throughout the novel (at the end of Daisy's pier, at intersections throughout the book)?
    3) Fitzgerald returns several times to describe a decrepit optical products sign the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleberg that hovers over "the valley of ashes." What does that sign represent?

    Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald
    About F. Scott Fitzgerald

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, the only son of an aristocratic father and a provincial, working-class mother. He was therefore the product of two divergent traditions: while his father's family included the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (after whom Fitzgerald was named), his mother's family was, in Fitzgerald's own words, "straight 1850 potato-famine Irish." As a result of this contrast, he was exceedingly ambivalent about the notion of the American dream: for him, it was at once vulgar and dazzlingly promising. It need scarcely be noted that such fascinated ambivalence is itself typically American. Like the central character of The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald had an intensely romantic imagination; he once called it "a heightened sensitivity to the promises of life." The events of Fitzgerald's own life can be seen as a struggle to realize those promises. He attended both St. Paul Academy (1908-10) and Newman School (1911-13), where his intensity and outsize enthusiasms made him extremely unpopular with the other students. Later, at Princeton University, he came close to the brilliant success of which he dreamed. He became part of the influential Triangle Club, a dramatic organization whose members were taken from the cream of high society. He also became a prominent figure in the literary life of the university and made lifelong friendships with Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. Despite these social coups, Fitzgerald struggled academically, and eventually flunked out of Princeton.
