For several years now, Dalkey Archive Press has been reprinting some of the finest, lesser-known novels of the twentieth century. New to this list is Gilbert Sorrentino's The Sky Changes . First published in 1966, later re-issued in a slightly revised form in 1986, the novel, which focuses on a divorcing couple with laser-like intensity, remains as timely as when it first appeared. Before the title page, we have an epigraph provided by William Carlos Williams: "Divorce is/the sign of knowledge in our time/divorce! divorce!" And the novel then concentrates on a couple always referred to as the "husband" and the "wife", never by name. They have two young kids, a boy and a girl, and their marriage is well on the way to falling apart when the book opens. Native New Yorkers, they have decided to take a cross-country drive to Mexico where ostensibly they will make an effort to piece together their marriage. The new environment, the fresh landscape, will work wonders for them, or so at least the husband hopes. The novel is told in the third person but primarily through his thoughts and impressions, and throughout the journey we watch his despair and disillusion grow. He has moments of optimism, moments when he thinks a new start for their family may be possible, but there is always an underlying sadness.

by Daniel Brooks
Directed by Guillermo Verdecchia with Daniel Brooks
Produced by the Augusta Company
The Theatre Centre, Toronto, October 1998 Sky Gilbert

Both Brooks and Verdecchia have gone on to collaborate with others since Chomsky: Brooks most notably with Daniel MacIvor on Here Lies Henry and Monster. In Insomnia, Brooks and Verdecchia return partially to their signature structure; the last third of Insomnia is an extended political rant for actor Daniel Brooks. The first two-thirds of the play is a narrative told in terse, witty, quickly cut scenes between a heterosexual couple. The plot development occurs when the brother and sister-in-law of the couple come for a visit. Such a dry description, however, does not do the production justice. The ninety-minute piece is visually breathtaking, using every inch of the small Theatre Centre space in Toronto to create a long corridor of black curtains, which serve as both doorways and walls.
But all this heterosexism is performed very well, I must say. And I mean that, sincerely, as a compliment.

SKY NOT YET SPUN
Age 25, with Paula, his girfriend. Photo: Ejaculations Let us return, for a moment, to Don Mills. Sky Gilbert recalls his mother saying that "Don Mills rivalled New Rochelle, New York (where Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore lived in the famous sitcom), as a clean, upwardly mobile middle class suburb." She had move from Buffalo (there six years, transferred from Connecticut by her husband's insurance company employer) with her kids Schuyler and Lydia and without Mr Gilbert. They had divorced. It was traumatic. They had, Sky writes, "lived an idyllic life in a Buffalo suburb. What had been a kind of Leave it to Beaver existence suddenly turned strange." She had thought Toronto, "a popular figure skating city," would be ideal for a fresh start. The family had done lots of it at the local curling club. But "Stars on Ice" was not in Sky's stars. More telling had been his "organizing the neighbourhood kids into impromptu performances that I wrote," and a Grade Six essay: "The Autobiography of a Playwright."
"Perhaps I should say something at the outset about being an American in Canada. I'm still an American citizen. ... I talk like an American, walk like one, and think like one. If you've spent the first 12 years of your life in the USA, it's hard to leave your Americanness behind.

"Carole, why now? Why this book now ... why?" "I write this with trepidation. Mainly, I wonder why you would want to read it. What is there about Sky Gilbert's life that's going to hold anyone's interest through a whole book?"
They both start with the same question: Why? One could suspect them a bit disingenuous. I don't. Carole Pope and Sky Gilbert aren't really famous. Not, say, by the standards of Hollywood. I have a brother there, gay and au courant ; he's never heard of them. Well, they are Canadian... if not Celine Dion or Michael J Fox. But they are divas, well known; Sky locally, Carole perhaps more widely if poorly known for their true gifts. Both are pioneers of the erotic: Pope a pervert before her time; Gilbert too queer for times of "respectable" gay smarm. Both, also, are familiar with the potential use, and abuse, of celebrity. Carole writes:
"I'm obsessed with show biz and the cult of personality. The cutthroat food chain of flesh and fantasy that destroys everything in its path. It's a world where I feel so at home, a world where a diva, like me, gets to live in a bubble of her own creation.

By Shaun Proulx SHAUN PROULX TALKS TO SKY GILBERT ky Gilbert. You either love him or he drives you nuts. Writer, director, filmmaker and one hell of a drag queen, he's a controversial Canadian artist to be reckoned with. His plays have been produced from Toronto to New York, San Francisco, Chicago and London, and include the 1990 Dora Award winning The and Suzie Goo: Private Secretary which won him another Dora in 1992. His poetry has been published in a number of anthologies, his films include My Summer Vacation (presented at Hong Kong, Melbourne, London, San Francisco and Los Angeles gay and lesbian film festivals), and of course, he's most widely touted as co-founder of the premiere North American queer theatre, Buddies In Bad Times. His theatrical directing credits include Anything Goes and Salome at the Shaw Festival, and ever catch the children's show Dudley The Dragon ? That's him playing the Genie. Then there's his column in every other

I Am Kasper Klotz is an awesome book. It was really mixed. Kind of angry. Some good reviews, but a lot of negative ones. Well, the book got a great review in the Globe One of your inspirations for the book was an essay on AIDS and mass hysteria. You are obviously very interested in HIV and AIDS from a social and cultural perspective. GayGuideToronto.com we have I Am Kasper Klotz Self-respectability? And you go for it. best faggot Early in the book Kasper tells us about his neighbours in the apartment he lives in, including the drag queen who is bound and determined to get AIDS. ( Have you ever heard of the medical intuitive Carolyn Myss? One of her books is called The Stonewall Experiment About being gay I have a friend who is HIV positive who, when he told me, had the definite stance about it that it was something he was glad to have gotten over with. Then in I Am Kasper Klotz Globe Why did you set the book in the States? Yeah, oh yeah. I also think that gay villages are everywhere to some degree.

Review by Ibolya Kaslik St.Stephen's contains many genuinely compelling insights about gay life, poignant moments and laughs but, unfortunately, a successful novel it is not. Gilbert's central rambling narrator, Jack, starts with a clear enough thesis-like statement: "Teaching is learning; learning is teaching". As we follow Jack from his transformation from hip, urban, gay actor to small-town university professor, we learn some incidental things but very little about teaching and learning, except that it is probably not a very good idea to sleep with your students. The novel's shortcomings, however, have little to do with structure as there is a clear sense of journey and movement through Jack's various experiences at the college. His relationship with the older Matthew, the "dapper dean", who adopts Jack as protégée and professor, shapes Jack's narrative but provides a shakey, almost pointless line of reference as the relationship sours and leaves Jack, two-thirds of the way through the novel, where he began; an aging, bright homosexual with a penchant for young men. In fact, Gilbert's self-conscious need for structure is the weakest part of the book as the tangential Jack is best when he discusses themes, anecdotes and beguiles the reader with observations like:

There are times when you should use the Moon as the ruler or co-significator of the querent. Naturally, if Cancer rules the ascendent, the moon is the ruler of the querent; but when another sign rules the ascendant and its ruler is also the planet ruling the house asked about, allow the Moon to be the querent's ruler, and allow the planet to rule the house asked about. When your ruler is retrograde, let the Moon represent you. When your ruler is peregrine (this is when a planet is not in a sign or element of its own, or the moon makes no aspect) let the Moon be your ruler. When your ruler makes no aspect to the planet ruling the matter asked about, let the Moon represent you. The Moon still has more information to aid in the judgement of your horary chart.

Toronto, novelist playwright, sky gilbert answers a question all gays are asked, why are people gay. I'ma new fucking man, man. BY sky gilbert Toronto.
http://digitalqueeries.905host.net/files/sky_gilbert.htm

Sky Gilbert

Toronto, novelist, poet, film maker
playwright, actor. The end of straight I knew it all along. Deep down inside, straight guys are gay. Do you doubt what I'm saying? Hustle on down to see Jackass, a new movie (Nov 2002) produced by MTV and created by the gang that put together the TV show of the same name. If you haven't seen this picture, you've been missing out on a shitload of fun. This flick is a perfect example of what I and just about every other gay man (if he's honest) thinks about straight guys. You see, we've always known that deep down, underneath all those masculine rituals behind all that backslapping and jockstrap-pulling horseplay there's a lot of good, old-fashioned, homosexual horniness. Just in case you haven't caught Jackass, here's an idea of what goes down. These guys are, almost every one of them, buff, tough and tattooed. And they spend most of this movie in their birthday suits. There's nothing these wisecrackers seem to like better than getting buck naked with each other. And what do they do after they take it all off? Well, they lick honey out of each others' ass cracks (not actually filmed in this movie, but alluded to), they stick firecrackers in each others' butts or take endless glee in having a couple of male pals over to watch them shove a dinky car toy up their rectums. If this film holds any truth at all about what constitutes good, not-so-clean, masculine fun, well, then a lot of it must involve guys playing with each others' nasty ol' rear ends.
