b o o k s FICTION Super satire ADRIAN MOLE: THE CAPPUCCINO YEARS, by Sue Townsend (Penguin), 391 pages, $32.99 cloth. Rating: NNNN If Adrian Mole were a light bulb, he'd have trouble illuminating the interior of a refrigerator. A self-appointed intellectual, he's smart enough to realize he's not that clever. The inner thoughts of this ingenuous teenage nerd The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 13 /4 became the UK's largest-selling book of the last 20 years. That first journal spawned a slew of sequels, two TV series and a West End musical. The Cappuccino Years, Mole's latest and last scribblings, finds Adrian at the epicentre of trendy late-90s London. Now 30 /4 and a celebrity chef at Hoi Polloi, a posh spot serving traditional Brit grub like chips cooked in lard, tinned tomato soup and instant coffee to clamouring foodies, Mole lands a gig as host of Offaly Good!, a TV cooking show devoted to animal-gizzard cuisine. While author Sue Townsend's previous chronicles slyly skewered then-contemporary England under the thumb of Margaret Thatcher, Cappuccino is set against the media-frenzy backdrop of PM Tony Blair's Cool Britannia. Recurring character and love-interest Pandora Braithwaite is now a Labour MP, a socialist in a Chanel suit. Adrian's nemesis, skinhead-poet Barry Kent, exacerbates his friend's failure by having become the critically acclaimed and best-selling creator of Dork's Diary, a thinly veiled rip-off of guess-who's work. And the BBC still isn't interested in Mole's script for a sitcom about a serial killer, and Lo! The Flat Hills Of My Homeland, his experimental novel containing no vowels, remains unpublished.
