"Since we cannot change reality," he said. "Let us change the eyes which see reality." His works examined the dual nature of man and the conflict between the flesh and spirit "You have everything but one thing, madness. A man needs a little madness or else he never dares cut the rope and be free," he said. His earthy novel Zorba the Greek (Vios kai politeia tou Alexi Zorba, 1946) created a passionate character, immortalized by Anthony Quinn in film. "Ah, if you could dance all that you've just said," proclaimed Zorba, "then I'd understand." Controversy exploded with The Last Temptation of Christ (O teleutaios peirasmos, 1951), a novel of Jesus ' struggle to reconcile his humanity and divinity. The book, which includes a dream-like scene of an angel leading Christ from the cross, was banned by the Church in 1954.

ALBERT CAMUS Y NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS.

Home Articles Games Portals ... Contact Us Philosopher of the Month January 2003 - Nikos Kazantzakis Lewis Owens Although many may be familiar with the novels Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ , both of which have been adapted into films, few are as familiar with their author, Nikos Kazantzakis. Although Kazantzakis has a large following in the United States, and is becoming more and more accepted in his homeland of Greece, he has, as yet, failed to achieve the recognition elsewhere that he so richly deserves. Novelist, dramatist, poet and journalist, Kazantzakis's philosophy consist largely in a pioneering attempt to retain a spiritual world-view whilst heeding Nietzsche's devastating attack on metaphysiscs. Kazantzakis was born in Iraklion, Crete, in 1883. He studied law in Athens before moving to Paris to study under the influential French philosopher Henri Bergson. In Paris he also developed a deep appreciation of Nietzsche, and soon afterwards became heavily interested in the teaching of the Buddha. He also composed travel books about his journalistic visits to Europe and the Far East. His magnum opus, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel consists of a monumental 33,333 verses and was completed in 1938.

Nikos Kazantzakis, author, poet and philosopherGreece's "Modern Homer"is probably best known in the US for his novels, Zorba the Greek , and The Last Temptation of Christ , the latter of which caused much controversy when transferred to the big screen in the mid 1980s. But his most ambitious work was the epic poem, The Odyssey: a Modern Sequel , some 33,333 lines long, which takes up where Homer left off. Of all the authors on our list of Alexander fiction, he and Renault probably have the highest profile as literary artists (along perhaps with Wassermann). If written for the juvenile reader, his novel on Alexander originally published in Greece in serial form in the 1940s still captures the lyric quality and mythic power of all Kazantzakis' prose. The 1981 English edition includes lovely pen-and-ink illustrations as well as end-maps. If there is a "problem" with the book, it lies in its historical accuracy. But first, several caveats need to be applied. Like Renault, Kazantzakis wrote (and, in fact, lived and died) before the recent bloom of Macedonian studies (see the review on Renault for more details). There is much that he simply did not know. Kazantzakis was also a Greek, with a Greek's understandable pride in the history and heros of the past. This does not mean that he idolizes Alexander entirely in fact, he resists doing so, never being one to overlook the faults in individuals, even while he celebrated their virtues. Zorba remains so charming because we see in him on the grand scale our faults and virtues, our victories and failures. Kazantzakis' heros are human, and he treats Alexander with the same perception. If this is an heroic Alexander a young Achilles it is not a perfect Alexander.

    Nikos Kazantzakis
