Jack Kerouac was born Jean-Louis Kerouac, a French-Canadian child on March 12, 1922 in working-class Lowell , Massachusetts. Ti Jean spoke a local dialect of French called joual before he learned English. The youngest of three children, he was heartbroken when his older brother Gerard died of rheumatic fever at the age of nine. Ti Jean was an intense and serious child, devoted to Memere (his mother) and constantly forming important friendships with other boys, as he would continue to do throughout his life. He was driven to create stories from a young age, inspired first by the mysterious radio show 'The Shadow,' and later by the fervid novels of Thomas Wolfe , the writer he would model himself after. Lowell had once thrived as the center of New England's textile industry, but by the time of Kerouac's birth it had begun to sink into poverty. Kerouac's father, a printer and well-known local businessman, began to suffer financial difficulties, and started gambling in the hope of restoring prosperity to the household. Young Jack hoped to save the family himself by winning a football scholarship to college and entering the insurance business. He was a star back on his high school team and won some miraculous victories, securing himself a scholarship to Columbia University in New York. His parents followed him there, settling in Ozone Park, Queens.

"Great Chicago glowed red before our eyes. We were suddenly on Madison Street among hordes of hobos, some of them sprawled out on the street with their feet on the curb, hundreds of others milling in the doorways of saloons and alleys... ...We let out the hobos on this street and proceeded to downtown Chicago. Screeching trolleys, newsboys, gals cutting by, the smell of fried food and beer in the air, neons winking'We're in the big town, Sal! Whooee!' First thing to do was park the Cadillac in a good dark spot and wash up and dress for the night. Across the street from the YMCA we found a redbrick alley between buildings, where we stashed the Cadillac with her snout pointed to the street and ready to go, then followed the college boys up to the Y, where they got a room and allowed us to use their facilities for an hour. Dean and I shaved and showered. I dropped my wallet in the hall. Dean found it and was about to sneak it in his shirt when he realized it was ours and was right disappointed... ...But we forgot that and headed straight for North Clark Street, after a spin in the Loop, to see the hootchy-kootchy joints and hear the bop. And what a night it was.

Kerouac became interested in Buddhism through a Zen experience, a moment of chance that brought enlightenment. After reading Thoreau's Walden in 1954, Kerouac was intrigued by Thoreau's mention of Hindu philosophy, and Kerouac accidentally picked up The Life of Buddha . This discovery led him to beginning a life of study, meditation, and contemplative and monastic living. In Buddhist philosophy he found that he shared ideas on not only spontaneity, but also compassion for "beat" and down people. Kerouac began writing Buddhist-influenced pieces and eventually met other poets influenced by the East when he attended the 1955 Six Gallery reading in California. He developed a relationship with Gary Snyder, who encouraged Kerouac's practice. Kerouac even envisioned a meditation center without rules, where wanderers could stop in spontaneously to rest and meditate.
Traditionally, a haiku is a three-line poem of 17 Japanese onji , like syllables—the first and third lines consisting of 5 onji each. The form is short so that it may be read in one breath, expressing the idea of the moment's immediacy in one exhalation. Spiritual reality is reflected in a simple seasonal or natural image, which reflects the Eastern connection of man to nature. A haiku should bring the reader directly to the experience in an intimate sharing of an ordinary moment, presenting the whole of life in that one event. The real experience is conveyed in the present tense, working to promote insight or satori and evoke feelings like awe, surprise, and joy in the reader. Two men who were influential in promoting Buddhism in the West also had specific ideas about haiku:
