42. Jack Kerouac By LIPE
A controversia que a vida e a obra de jack kerouac.
http://www.geocities.com/kerouacgz

Jack Kerouac's New York City
The following is a list of places in New York City where Jack Kerouac once roamed, drank or lived.
Jack Kerouac- merchant marine.
The White Horse Tavern 567 Hudson St.

Kerouac used to live across the street from this old 19th century tavern. It is said that the old wooden bar room hasnt changed at all. The side rooms are relatively recent additions. This place is a crowded nightmare on weekend nights. Go there on a weekday around 1 o'clock, take a seat at the bar and soak up the atmosphere. They have a decent selection of beer, including White Horse Ale. The food is good too. Other great writers who got blitzed at the White Horse: Dylan Thomas, Norman Mailer, Hunter S. Thompson. Saint Patricks's Cathedral- 5th Ave. and 49th St.
Located in Midtown, just a stones throw from Rockefeller center, this beautiful gothic cathedral was a place of spiritual solace for Kerouac. Take your copy of Visons of Cody and see if you can find Jack's stained glass window. McSorley's Old Ale House- 15 E. 7th St.
Established in 1854, this is New York's oldest bar. Four U.S presidents including Lincoln and Kennedy visited this bar. As far as I know Kerouac made no mention of it in any of his writings, but it seems impossible to me that he didn't drink here. Everything in this bar looks ancient- from the doors to the urinals. They serve only two beers- McSorley's Light and McSorley's Dark. One round consists of 2 mugs of beer. Each mug is about 3/5th's beer and 2/5th's foam. Since it is both a tourist trap and local favorite it is often very crowded. Get there before 4 and you should be able to find a table.

49. Bright Lights Film Journal | The Source
Documentary on Allen Ginsberg, jack kerouac, William Burroughs, and all things Beatnik
http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/26/thesource.html
An uneven new documentary
looks at all things Beat

BY GARY MORRIS The Beats have returned with a vengeance. New editions of On the Road are rolling off the presses; interest in Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs is at an all-time high; Beat women like Diane di Prima are getting some well-deserved attention, as are black Beats such as Amiri Baraka. Like other counterculture movements, the Beat generation has for some been reduced to a fashion statement — chinos, T-shirt, and masculine scowl. It’s also been neatly coopted by corporations seeking street credibility — even Ginsberg did a Gap ad before he died. It’s not hard to imagine Kerouac’s face next to John and Yoko’s in those duplicitous "Think Different" billboards from Apple. The Source looks at these issues and the whole history of the Beats in a intriguing, if ultimately rather shallow, documentary that’s less a linear biography of the movement than a kind of "Beat chic" sampler. (No real surprise here: Workman’s also responsible for those slick, empty montages at the Academy Awards every year.) This collage portrait moves giddily from the ‘40s to the ‘90s, from historical footage to Hollywood send-ups of Beat culture, from realism to re-creation via a trio of actors who impersonate Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. Newsreel footage of Eisenhower America and Levittown, shots from Ozzie and Harriet

the best Valentine's "card" I've ever received. Thank you. Note: If you tried to tune in between August 1 and August 8, the station was down because I hadn't yet paid for a membership, part of the new flunky rules. Well, now it's all back up again. Look forward to some new tunes soon. Listen to Laguna Radio , a six-hour-plus radio show I put together on Live365. See below for a list of artists. To listen, do the following things (you need at least a 56K modem): 1. Go get Winamp. It's free. Don't delay. Just go to www.winamp.com and download the thing. Then just mess around with it and set it up to your liking. You don't have to be a geek to figure this out. It's a simple media player that will play MP3 files (so does RealPlayer, but I don't like that one). Figure out how to set your buffer stream to the highest so that you won't get much lag. Or see this link for help.

American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Jack Kerouac (1922-1969)
Index The son of an impoverished French-Canadian family, Jack Kerouac also questioned the values of middle-class life. He met members of the "Beat" literary underground as an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York City. His fiction was much influenced by the loosely autobiographical work of southern novelist Tom Wolfe Kerouac's best-known novel, On the Road (1957), describes "beatniks" wandering through America seeking an idealistic dream of communal life and beauty through jazz and drug-induced visions. The book epitomises the generation that Kerouac himself named as “beat.” It is the tale of his adventures with Neal Cassady (the character Dean Moriarty), before he dropped out of the 'Beat' scene and withdrew into alcoholism. The Dharma Bums (1958) also focuses on peripatetic counterculture intellectuals and their infatuation with Zen Buddhism. Kerouac also penned a book of poetry

(Originally written for Evergreen Review in 1969, published early 1970 at the request of publisher Barney Rossett as an obituary for Kerouac) I used to see Jack often at the old Five Spot in the beginning of 1957, when I was working there. I knew he was a writer, and all musicians knew that he loved music. You could tell by the way he sat and listened. He never tried to seem hip. He was too interested in life around him to ever think of how he appeared. Musicians understood this and were always glad to see him, because we knew that meant at least one person would be I listening. Jack was on the same wave-length as we were, so it was never necessary to talk. A few months later, poets Howard Hart and Philip Lamantia came by my place with Jack. They had decided to read their poetry with music, and Jack said he would join in, reading, improvising, rapping with the audience and singing along. Our first performance was in December of 1957 at the Brata Art Gallery on East 10th Street. It was the first jazz-poetry reading in New York. There was no advertising and it was raining, but the place was packed. Jack had become the most important figure of the time. His name was magic. In spite of the carping, whining put-downs by the furious critics, and the jealousy of some of his contemporaries for his overnight success (he had written ten books in addition to

Brief essay on the writer.
http://www.americanlegends.com/authors/kerouac.html
Kerouac: Homage To Jack Jean-Louis Kerouac: His life was the stuff of which legends are spun. The son of a printer, he was born in 1922, and grew up in a mill town, Lowell, Massachusetts. The Kerouacs were French- Canadian, descended from fur trappers and traders. Even as a boy, Kerouac knew what he would be: a writer. Athletic, rugged, handsome, he called himself Jackafter Jack London, and, like London, his vision of the world was romantic and adventurous. Yet, Kerouac might have remained in Lowell, another kid who dreamed of glory, if luck had not lent a magical hand. In high school, Kerouac was spotted playing football by an Ivy League scout and was recruited to play in the backfield for Columbia University. The university arranged for a scholarship, and Kerouac arrived on the Morningside Heights campus in the fall of 1940. Like some character in Balzac, another writer he admired, the glittering prewar city lay before him, with all the promise it held for youth. But the world has a way of holding out its treasures only to snatch them away. Freshman year, Kerouac was injured in a game and sat out the season. According to a biographer, sophomore year, Jack quit the team and dropped out of Columbia because the coach kept him on the bench. (Ann Charters

    Keeping the Beat
By JOSHUA TANZER Offoffoff.com (Originally reviewed in May 2002 at the Thirteenth Street Repertory.) KEROUAC Full title: Written by: Tom O'Neil Directed by: Stanley Harrison Cast: John Jordan, Tim Cox, Michael Mercandeth, Kyle Pierson, Gavin Smith, Deirdre Schwiesow, Meredith Faltin The play is more about impressions of Kerouac than revelations about him. It conveys some sense of his passion for life and people, his free-associative, jazzlike writing style, and his alcoholic breakdown. Even more, as he spars with his writing pals over the past, we get a feeling for how he bridged Cassady's free spirit and Ginsberg's intellect without ever equaling either one in these respects. We're meant to see the "On the Road" author's achievements and originality through the melancholy perceptions of a sad and dying middle-aged man. John Jordan does a capable job as Kerouac, while Kyle Pierson plays the more macho, adventurous anti-intellectual Cassady and Gavin Smith is nebbishy as Ginsberg. It helps to have a little knowledge about the characters involved (at least you should know that Ginsberg was openly gay, the other writers were not above sleeping with one another whether technically bisexual or whatever, and Kerouac is well known to have drunk himself to death while living miserably with his mother). The play is not likely to stimulate an interest in the Beat writers in audience members who don't know them, but for those who do, it tries to give a deeper feeling for their most prominent member's life, death, spirit and what he's left to us today.
