King William's War (1689-1697) was the first of what came to be known in America as the French and Indian wars. In fact, the French and Indian Wars were a series of colonial wars between Great Britain and France that lasted three-quarters of a century. Hostilities in King William's War begain in 1690, when in the course of a few months Schenectady, N.Y., was burned by the French and Indians, and colonial English forces launched attacks on Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal), Nova Scotia, and on Quebec. Despite further raids by the French and Indians, the war ended in a stalemate. The Treaty of Ryswick, by which were ended the war and its European counterpart, the War of the Grand Alliance restored all colonial possessions to their prewar status.
  • French and Indian forces from Montreal attacked and burned Schenectady, N.Y.
  • The city of Quebec was attacked by English forces in the first major military operation of King William's War. They were repulsed by the French under Louis de Baude, comte de Palluau et de Frontenac

King William of England Addresses Parliament on the French Question, 31 December 1701
note Gentlemen of the House of Commons; I do recommend these matters to you with that concern and earnestness, which their importance requires. At the same time I cannot but press you to take care of the public credit, which cannot be preserved but by keeping sacred that maxim, that they shall never be losers, who trust to a Parliamentary security. It is always with regret, when I do ask aids of my people; but you will observe, that I desire nothing, which relates to any personal expence of mine; I am only pressing you to do all you can for your own safety and honour, at so critical and dangerous a time; and am willing, that what is given, should be wholly appropriated to the purposes for which it is intended.... I should think it as great a blessing as could befall England, if I could observe you as much inclined to lay aside those unhappy fatal animosities, which divide and weaken you, as I am disposed to make all my subjects safe and easy as to any, even the highest offences, committed against me. Let me conjure you to disappoint the only hopes of our enemies by your unanimity. I have shewn, and will always shew, how desirous I am to be the common father of all my people. Do you, in like manner, lay aside parties and divisions. Let there be no other distinction heard of amongst us for the future, but of those, who are for the Protestant Religion, and the present establishment, and of those, who mean a Popish Prince, and a French government. I will only add this; if you do in good earnest desire to see England hold the balance of Europe, and to be indeed at the head of the Protestant interest, it will appear by your right improving the present opportunity.

Note to: King William of England Addresses Parliament on the French Question, 31 December 1701
King William of Holland and his wife Mary, daughter of King James II of England, mounted the English throne at the invitation of Parliament after James II fled to France in 1688. William III was a firm opponent of French expansion in Europe, either by the acquisition of territory or the development of overpowering political coalitions. He viewed with alarm a move by Louis XIV to install a Catholic pretender to the English throne; moreover, William saw the maneuver of Louis to gain control of the Spanish throne as a giant step toward French domination of Europe and America and thus the world - which was, in fact, the objective of the French sovereign. to the text of: King William of England Addresses Parliament on the French Question, 31 December 1701 Scanned and Converted to HTML by Dylan van Rijsbergen

Service Area
Our agency is located on Highway 360 in the Aylett community of King William County (about 25 miles north east of Richmond). We cover approximately 160 square miles. Our service area is very rural however, with a population of less than 10,000. We respond to around 600 calls a year (90% of which are EMS).
Dispatched by the King William County Sheriff's Department Dispatch Frequency - 155.835 MHz Pictured above is the Station 1. Originally a service garage, this cinder block building has housed the department's fire and EMS equipment since 1963. As you may notice we have more equipment than bay space. We hope to fix this problem with the construction of a new building on land donated to us across the highway. General Business Meetings are held every 3rd Monday - What do you want to do? -

History State ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! King William I c.1028-87 After successfully invading England, William the Conqueror changed the course of English history. The illegitimate son of Robert I of Normandy, William became Duke of Normandy on his father's death in 1035. With many in his family eager to profit from his death, his childhood was dangerous: three of his guardians died violently and his tutor was murdered. In 1042 he began to take more personal control, but his attempts to bring his subjects into line caused problems. From 1046 until 1055 he dealt with a series of baronial rebellions. In 1052, facing rebellions in eastern Normandy, he began conducting negotiations with his cousin Edward the Confessor, King of England. William developed an ambition to become his kinsman's heir, encouraged by Edward, who possibly even promised him the throne in 1051. In around 1064 Edward sent Harold, Earl of Wessex, on an embassy to Normandy. During this trip Norman writers maintain that he swore to support William's claim to the English throne. Yet when Edward died childless in January 1066, Harold was himself crowned king. Furious, William decided on war. He landed in England on 28th September, establishing a bridgehead near Hastings. Harold met him from Stamford Bridge, where he had just defeated Harald Hardraade. He arrived at Hastings late on 13th October, his troops tired. Early the next day William attacked. After a poor start, he rallied his troops. Harold's brothers were killed early in the battle; Harold fell towards dusk. On Christmas Day 1066 William was crowned.

On October 1, 2002, Brig. Gen. M. Stephen Rhoades announced his decision on the proposal to construct the 1,526 acre King William Reservoir on Cohoke Creek, a small tributary of the Pamunkey River in King William County, Virginia. This reservoir would supply 23 million gallons of water per day to the Lower Peninsula of Virginia. He determined that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs additional information to complete the permit process. The City of Newport News applied to the Norfolk District in 1993 for this permit to build a reservoir to meet its long-term water supply projections. After the District recommended denial in March 2001 (click District Decision on left), the permit application was elevated to the Division when Gov. James S. Gilmore III requested that the Division Commander make the decision. After a long and thorough review, General Rhoades decided the project’s purpose and need as submitted by the City of Newport News is valid and the project is the least environmentally damaging practicable alternative to meet the water supply need based on current information.

King William 111 Prince of Orange LOL 1313 From the foundation of the Orange Institution in 1795 to the early part of the twentieth century Dublin City and County was an important Protestant and Orange centre in Ireland. Dublin was the political capital of Ireland until the Act of Union in 1801, which closed the Irish Parliament and united it with Westminster. However Dublin remained the administrative capital of Ireland until partition in 1921. The first Grand Lodge of Ireland meeting was held in Dublin. The first Minute Book of the Grand Lodge reads as follows:- "That it is advisable that this first meeting of the Grand Lodge of Ireland should be on Monday the 9th Day of April at the House of Thomas Verner of Dawson Street Esq. Grand Master of the Counties of Londonderry, Tyrone and Fermanagh." The Dawson Street home was the town house of James Verner M.P. (A Member of the Irish Parliament), and father of Thomas Verner J.P. A Plaque in the footpath, erected by Dublin Corporation, now marks the place where the Verner house once stood. Dublin was therefore, as the administrative Capital of the Island, the natural headquarters for the Orange Institution and remained such until the Headquarters Buildings, the Fowler Memorial Hall in Rutland Square, was severely damaged in the Civil War. The Headquarters, situated in what is now Parnell Square, at the top of O'Connell Street, had been seized by the IRA, and in conjunction with the Rotunda, used as their headquarters. Following its evacuation by the IRA all the books and documents which had survived the siege were removed to Belfast where they were safely stored. The last public parade in Dublin was in 1936, when the Brethren were attacked as they walked from the Fowler Hall to Amiens St Station to travel by train to Belfast, for the annual 12th of July celebrations.

KING WILLIAM'S WAR, 1689-1698
The Eastern Indians generally appear to have observed the treaty made at Casco, in 1678, conducting themselves for several years peaceably towards the English settlers, who, in the meantime, had been gradually recovering from their losses in the late disastrous war; but, partly through fault of the English themselves, the peace was at length broken and ravages committed, beginning with several places in the province of Maine. The first sufferers in New Hampshire were in Dover, on the 28th of June, 1689, when the aged Major Waldron and more than a score of others were killed, and nearly thirty were taken captive. About a month later the savages feel upon the settlement at Oyster River also, and killed or carried off nearly twenty persons. On the 8th of July the town of Hampton voted "that all those who were willing to make a fortification about the Meeting House, to secure themselves and their families from the violence of the heathen, should have free liberty to do it." A fortification was accordingly built, which, about three years afterward, the town voted to enlarge so as to afford room "to build houses in it according to custom in other forts." How many houses were built is not known, but it was voted that a small house (14 by 16 feet) should be built there for the use of the minister, and when not occupied by him to serve as a schoolhouse.
