King William of England Addresses Parliament
on the French Question, (31 December 1701)
Quote Context Gentlemen of the House of Commons; I do recommend these matters to you with that concern and earnestness, which their importance requires. At the same time I cannot but press you to take care of the public credit, which cannot be preserved but by keeping sacred that maxim, that they shall never be losers, who trust to a Parliamentary security. It is always with regret, when I do ask aids of my people; but you will observe, that I desire nothing, which relates to any personal expence of mine; I am only pressing you to do all you can for your own safety and honour, at so critical and dangerous a time; and am willing, that what is given, should be wholly appropriated to the purposes for which it is intended.... I should think it as great a blessing as could befall England, if I could observe you as much inclined to lay aside those unhappy fatal animosities, which divide and weaken you, as I am disposed to make all my subjects safe and easy as to any, even the highest offences, committed against me. Let me conjure you to disappoint the only hopes of our enemies by your unanimity. I have shewn, and will always shew, how desirous I am to be the common father of all my people. Do you, in like manner, lay aside parties and divisions. Let there be no other distinction heard of amongst us for the future, but of those, who are for the Protestant Religion, and the present establishment, and of those, who mean a Popish Prince, and a French government. I will only add this; if you do in good earnest desire to see England hold the balance of Europe, and to be indeed at the head of the Protestant interest, it will appear by your right improving the present opportunity.

King William's College
One of the first public schools to be founded in the 19 th Century - built from the proceeds of the Bishop Barrow Trust it opened in August 1833 and still continues, very successfully, today. However this page concentrates on the 19 th Century aspects. Canon Hinton Bird discusses what in his opinion was the somewhat dubious circumstances in which money allocated for a theological seminary to train Manx priests became used to fund a public school, most of whose pupils have been non-Manx with no connection with the Island. Famous non-manx pupils include Dean Farrar and Sir W.H. Bragg among many others. Many Manx boys who later went onto hold senior posts on the Island also attended the college, the most famous being T.E.Brown who for a brief period was Vice-Principal.
Proposed Design from 1831 Oswald's Guide - drawn by J. Welch The building was designed by E. Welch and J. Hansom though J. Welch claimed to have redesigned the tower after his brother left the Island; later rebuilt to a somewhat different design in 1844 after a disasterous fire J.G.Cumming

King William's War (1690-1697)
King James II of England, unlike his profligate brother, Charles II, was extremely religious, and his religion was that of Rome. The large majority of the people of England were Protestants; but they would have submitted to a Catholic king had he not used his official power to convert the nation to Catholicism. From the time of James's accession, in 1685, the unrest increased, until, three years later, the opposition was so formidable that the monarch fled from his kingdom and took refuge in France. The daughter of James and her husband, the Prince of Orange, became the joint sovereigns of England as William and Mary. This movement is known in history as the English Revolution. Louis XIV, the king of France, was a Catholic and in full sympathy with James. Moreover, he denied the right of a people to change sovereigns, and espoused the cause of James; and war between the two nations followed. This war was reflected in America, as King William rejected an offer of colonial neutrality, and it is known as "King William's War." The English colonies had long watched the French encroachments on the north; the French determined to hold the St. Lawrence country, and to extend their power over the vast basin of the Mississippi; and each was jealoous of the other concerning the fisheries and the fur trade. To these differences must be added an intense religious feeling. The English colonies were almost wholly Protestant except

William of Orange 1650-1702
For William's Geneology click here! Posthumous son of William II of Orange ruler of the United Netherlands. Married Mary daughter of James duke of York 1677 Short, asthmatic, stooped bad teeth and beaked nose. His family:Nassau was unhealthy and suffered from mysterious fevers of a tubeercular nature. Wiilliam was always weak and had a constant consumptive cough. His face was sullen and bloodless and scored with the deep lines which were the product of fighting ceaseles pain. He could not handle a horse or sword until full grown. His success in life came from the care he took to eat simply, drink little and obtain plenty of sleep. None the less he overcame all of these physical setbacks to present a dashing and inspiring figure on horseback in the thick of the fight. William II was obsessed with the destruction of Imperial France and the salvation of the Netherlands. As King William III of England he accomplished far more for the welfare of the English people than had most of his native-born predecessors. He removed the tyranny of games and reformed the nations political and financial institutions. His reign marked the transition from the personal government of the Stuarts to the parliamentary rule of the Hanoverians-control of the army was transferred to Parliament, a better system of finance was introduced and the Bank of England was established. The constitutioal rights of the people were set on a firmer basis. No matter what country was to deal with England they would deal with a constitutional monarchy after 1689 (for example Ireland-It was hard enough to win freedom from a constitutional monarchy for a republic-under the tyranny of an absolutist this would have been much more difficult as found the French who were forced to accomplish this with their bloody revolution)

King William's War
William of Orange invaded England in November 1688 with 14,000 troops to prevent the formation of an Anglo-French alliance against the United Provinces. The prospect of a Catholic dynasty ruling England led the English to side with William, and King James II lost control of the capital, which was aflame with anti-Catholic rioting. William saw an opportunity to seize the throne for himself, and James escaped to France on 23 December 1688. These events were called the Glorious Revolution because, unlike that of 1640-60, it decisively ended the prospect of England becoming a state governed by an 'absolute' monarch, as had occurred in France. The accession of William and Mary to the British throne on 13 February 1689 brought about a reversal of British foreign policy towards France. The War of the League of Augsburg (1689-97) was known in America as King William's War. The European war broke out on 12 May 1689 when William III of England joined the League of Augsburg and the Netherlands (the Grand Alliance) to resist Louis XIV's invasion of the Rhenish Palatinate of 25 September 1688. The first of the French and Indian wars, hostilities in America began in 1690. Over a period of several months Schenectady, NY, was burned by the French and Indians, and colonial English forces launched attacks on Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal), Nova Scotia, and on Quebec. Following further raids by the French and Indians, the war ended in a stalemate. The Treaty of Ryswick (30 September 1697) restored the status quo ante in the colonies.

" He was a very wise man, and very powerful and more worshipful and stronger than any previous king had been. He was gentle to the good men who loved God, [but] stern beyond all measure to those who resisted his will. The good security he made in this country is not easily to be forgotten, so that any honest man could travel over his kingdom [in safety] with a bosom full of gold " - Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Sometimes referred to by medieval chroniclers as "William the Bastard", William the Conqueror was the illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy, whom he succeeded in 1035, at the age of eight. Successfully maintaining the independence of his lands against his French overlord, he established a powerful military reputation and subsequently married Matilda, daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders, who bore him at least nine children, including four boys. Norman society was a military aristocracy, in the words of the chronicler, William of Malmesbury (born c. 1095) " a race inured to war and can hardly live without it" . Their conquests in 11th-century Europe included Southern Italy and Sicily as well as the richest prize of all - England - whose well-organised taxation system provided her rulers with an income that their contemporaries could only dream about.
