Duncan is the Cowichan Valley's largest community, and known as the "City of Totems", with approximately 80 totem poles located downtown and along the Trans Canada Highway. The totem pole project was started in 1985 and many of the totems on display were removed from original sites and private collections. Follow the yellow footprints, which start at the Cowichan Valley Museum for a self-guided tour of 41 totem poles. Free guided tours are also available. Explore this area's aboriginal past and enjoy a look at the world of the Northwest Coast Natives at the Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference Centre . A wonderful cultural experience in a spectacular setting housing one of B.C.'s largest Native Art Galleries featuring authentic Cowichan sweaters, carvings, masks, prints and jewellery. Watch demonstrations of totem carving, weaving, silver-smithing, beadworking and a mid-day salmon BBQ show all summer long. The Cowichan Valley Museum is located in the 1912 train station which has, on its roof, a 5-foot long replica of a steam locomotive. The museum details the history of the Duncan area with a collection of items, displays, turn-of-the-century furnishings, and a reconstructed general store and medical room. Take a tour of the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery and Visitor Centre where hands-on displays address the need to protect fish habitats and stocks.

    Life Overview
Well, thank you for having an interest in my life. It isn't very exciting but I guess I can tell you about it now that you're here. The abridged version
    Birth
I was born in a small corner of the world known as Suedtirol, or its official name of Alto Adige, located in the very heart of the Italian Alps. Yes, it is hard to believe given my last name of Duncan. Let me explain, no there is too much, just let me sum up. My father is American (born and bred in Kentucky), my mother, Italian. I was born in Schlanders (Silandro), Italy, the nearest town with a hospital from my true hometown of Prad am Stilfserjoch (Prato allo Stelvio). That was on 5 September, 1972. January 1, 1973, we moved to Kentucky (that would be in the U.S.A. for those not familiar with it), and Derick, my beloved (ha ha) little brother, followed shortly thereafter on the 22nd of September of that same year.
    The Early Early Years
Ahem, anyway, back to my life. The first year of my life in America (and in this world for that matter), I spent in Henderson, living with my other set of grandparents, while my dad went to the Hill (the term used affectionately for the community college affiliated with the University of Kentucky). I can't remember exactly how old I was when we finally moved to Lexington. If I recall correctly, I was about 1 1/2 but I might have been closer to two (I should really ask my parents about such details some day).

Headline One out of every five black children ages 0-5 lived in poverty for at least nine years between 1987-1996. ( See Figure 2 Importance While living in poverty even occasionally is harmful to children, living in poverty year after year is considerably worse because the effects of poverty on children are cumulative. For example, young children growing up in poverty are more likely to have lower cognitive abilities and school achievement and impaired health and development. Growing up in poverty is also associated with lower occupational status and a lower wage rate as an adult. The problems associated with being raised in severe poverty (less than 50 percent of the poverty threshold) are correspondingly worse. Trends The percentage of young children who spent six or more of their next 10 years in poverty has increased over the last several decades, from 7 percent among those ages 0-5 in 1967 to 11 percent for those of similar age in 1987( See Figure 1 ). Most of this increase has taken place among non-Black children. (See Table 1)

    Duncan Murdoch's Programs
I am an amateur (and sometimes professional) programmer, and have written a large number of freeware and shareware programs. I tend to write programs for my own use first; if I think other people might like them, then I'll polish them up a bit and either give them away or sell them. The programs that I write fall into 4 categories:
General Utilities Programming Support Statistics and Probability Obsolete (?) Files
Some of these programs are free, some are shareware, a few are in the public domain. For most shareware programs I offer 3 levels of registration, all at very low prices:
  • A simple registration to allow continued use. This typically costs $10. In most cases you can pay by credit card (possibly for an additional $5 handling fee). A bonus registration. Besides granting the license, I will send you a collection of bonus programs . The collection contains a few programs not available here. The price varies, but is typically $25. A bonus registration with source code. This includes the license and the source code for the utility. (Source code is not available for all utilities.) The price is typically around $50, and this allows you to use the source code in your own programs. You may even distribute programs using the source code without additional royalties, provided that you do not distribute the source code, and do not distribute programs that compete with mine.
  • The Bonus Collection
If you choose the bonus registration for any of the utilties listed below, I will send you a collection of bonus utilities. These utilities are not available online, such as

24.03.2003 - Battle lines... On Saturday night I sat in a theatre watching a play about the pointlessness of the Great War. It was a really strange feeling. Certain lines from Oh What A Lovely War resonate loudly in my head and I question how applicable they are to the present war:
    • You must understand, my dear fellow, that war is a political and economic necessity. New springs of wealth arise from war - as the saying goes. It advances scientific discovery. War is the life blood of a nation.
It is said that truth is the first casualty of war. If this is so then certainty must be one of the next casualties. Consequently, another line that's reverberating through my head is Tom 's adaptation of Niels Bohr's quote about quantum mechanics:
    • Anyone who is 100% sure of the morality of their position with regard to the war in Iraq probably hasn't understood the issues involved.
Tom's quote rings true for me. I see new sides to the arguments every day and I distrust anyone who seems to have it all worked out. link so... tell me

Lucid, uncompromising, idiot-proof guide to the cited sidearm
    Cons
None: admirably fit for its intended purpose The Bottom Line A classic Duncan Long guide, free of cant and mindful always of safety and responsibility; essential for firearms owners and useful to writers and historians as well Full Review idea that these wicked firearms are even allowed to exist This is a book review. It is a review of a book about firearms, specifically, about the Ruger .22 personal weapon (AKA handgun). The book assumes as axiomatic that firearms exist, are there for a purpose, and should be dealt with seriously, as more than an Object of Declamatory Panic and Rabble-Rousing. Deal with it, people. This is, in fact, a compact, lucid, and technically superb volume from the estimable Duncan Long, who has written copiously and well of these matters, in a succession of handy paperbacks published by Paladin Press.
