    ANYARA-APHORISMS
    - Anais Nin quotes -
    ANAIS NIN, Pisces
    I am a Pisces.
Pisces ruled by Neptune, the planet of illusion.
Pisces is the planet of the actor.
And the design of it is two fishes,
one going upstream and one going downstream . . .
Pisces is very dual; also filled with empathy for others.
    It's the sign of compassion.
I became deeply interested in the problem of editing, how to avoid hurting or damaging people. How to reveal in such a subtle way that no explicit statement could be deduced
A human being who reveals himself should be treated with the same care we accord a new type of fish ... We must protect him from injury if we are to share his life." I have always been tormented by the image of multiplicity of selves. I am aware, that what I love and seek is illusive, tricky ... What ought to be and not what is interests me ... In between, an all-consuming loneliness. I may not become a saint, but I am very full and very rich. Watching the fish swim in the turquoise waters of the aquarium I experienced a suffocation. I had watched so intensely, I had been so absorbed by their breathing, I had forgotten to breathe for myself...I forgot to breathe as a woman. This happened to me so many times when I was watching the sorrows of others, their crumbling lives, the debris of their creations. I forgot to breathe as a woman, and for myself. I began to live the life of others, to gather the ashen fragments together, to weep at their despair, to share their rebellion, to enter into their struggle and fatigue, and I felt at times in the dark, the same suffocation of my forgotten self watching the aquarium.

February 21 ~  One's Courage Fire: From Journal of Love Life s h r i n k s or expands in p r o p o r t i o n to one's courage ." ~ Anais Nin A spirited diarist , Anais Nin (1903-1977) was born on this day in Paris . (Ah*nah*ees) began her famous diaries in 1914 when her father, a Spanish concert pianist, left the family for another woman. "The role of the writer is not to say what we can all say, but what we are unable to say," she said. Her diaries were sorrowful letters to her absent father, a literary exploration of self and creation of feminine identity. The first diary was published in 1966 and spanned the years from 1914-1974. She wrote 35,000 pages in 150 volumes. "I write emotional algebra," Nin observed in 1946. Writer Henry Miller , her mentor and lover, called the diaries "a 20-year struggle toward self-realization... Each line is pregnant with a soul struggle." The erotica of her voluminous writings was not something ladies talked or wrote about. Passionate and explicit, Nin delved candidly into her voyage of self-discovery as an artist and believed a woman's dreams were the source of nourishment. She launched

    A Literate Passion

    Edited by Gunther Stuhlmann
(Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Revered as a hero by his fans and disregarded as an egoistic scoundrel by his critics, Henry Miller lingers on in American literature as a presence for which no common consensus seams to exist. As with many artists who catalyze such a fiercely divided range of opinion, one suspects Miller symbolized a force, or personified a notion, extending well beyond his own personality or writing, and that the personification of such a transpersonal element provoked an equally transpersonal, emotion-ridden response.
Miller belonged to that tradition of literature which was idea- or content-oriented rather than merely self-consciously poetic or well-crafted. His descriptions of character are from a penetrating. deep-psychological point-of-view, and they carefully avoid the literal, clinical or superficial perspective. In style and vision, he is always expansive rather than reductive, ecstatic rather than aesthetic.
Miller was not divorced from his own work. Rather, he couldn't have been any closer to it writing, usually in the first-person, of his own experiences. He did so not simply to chronicle his own literal life; he selectively chose, caricatured and exaggerated certain episodes to serve as symbolic dramas which, when he was successful, addressed the larger issues of our times: mystical experiences and the question of God, the confrontation of the sacred and profane, of meaning and meaninglessness (the latter often symbolized in scenes of exaggerated sexuality for which he was later labelled a pornographer), the liberating role of the artist, the dehumanizing politics of the modem age, the spiritual value of marginal characters and societal misfits (many of them the "homeless" of his time) and meditations on the world to come.

Anxiety is love's greatest killer. It makes one feel as you might when a drowning man holds unto you. You want to save him, but you know he will strangle you with his panic. Art is the method of levitation, in order to separate one's self from enslavement by the earth. Life shrinks or expands according to one's courage. The final lesson a writer learns is that everything can nourish the writer. The dictionary, a new word, a voyage, an encounter, a talk on the street, a book, a phrase learned. The poet is one who is able to keep the fresh vision of the child alive. The preoccupation of the novelist: how to capture the living moments, was answered by the diary. You write while you are alive. You do not preserve them in alcohol until the moment you are ready to write about them. We write to taste life twice, in the moment, and in retrospection.

HENRY JAGLOM: MAGICIAN OF THE FILM
    (REVIEW OF “A SAFE PLACE”)
    BY ANAIS NIN
(FROM: IN FAVOR OF THE SENSITIVE MAN) From the early beginnings of the motion picture, Antonin Artaud said that only films would be able to depict dreams, fantasies, the surrealist aspect of our experience. But very soon movies veered away from that magic power and turned to one-dimensional stories. Very few made attempts to penetrate the deeper layers of our way of experiencing life. Yet film was the perfect medium for capturing our inner life. We know, we are aware of how our lives are an intermingling of dream, reality, illusion, fantasy, childhood influences, and wishes. As soon as I saw “A SAFE PLACE,” I knew this was the film which attempted to penetrate that level and did so with unusual sensitivity and skill. IT WAS A PERFECT FUSION, THE PERFECT SUPERIMPOSITION OF MEMORY, DREAM, ILLUSION, AND THE GRAPPLING WITH REALITY. The theme, which runs through “A SAFE PLACE” like a musical motif and gives the many-leveled story its continuity, is the constant return to the real bond between the girl and the magician. The girl bounces back from every encounter with love to the magician who performed for her when she was little. She is obsessed with the memory that, as a child, she was able to fly. She insists that the rational young man who loves her (PHILIP PROCTOR) should believe this. It is important that he believe this. THE SYMBOLISM OF WHAT SHE IS TRYING TO REACH, TO ASSERT, TO SEEK, IS DEEPLY MOVING: SHE SEEKS A DIMENSION IN LIFE IN WHICH DREAM AND REALITY ARE FUSED. EVERYTHING IN THIS FILM HAS TO BE INTERPRETED AS WE INTERPRET DREAMS.

Anais Nin was about as bright as you'd expect She said, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Courage can be confused with a shortage of self-respect by those who so utterly lack the latter that the need to claim the former becomes genuine. And perhaps party conversation shrinks or expands in proportion to one's willingness to commit moral seppuku, but courage cannot. At least her grammar was good. You really shouldn't overlook that.

when While in San Francisco on a recent reading tour, Bair talked to Salon about Nin's unique place in 20th century cultural history, why she excelled at memoir and erotica but not other forms of literature, and how biographers should handle personal revelations they unearth about their subjects. It really wasn't against their advice. Perhaps they were surprised and suggested we were an unlikely combination, Nin and me. What made me choose her was that I was finishing the biography of Simone de Beauvoir, and I had become fascinated through reading and rereading her memoirs with the idea of how and why and what women write about themselves. Originally, I was thinking that perhaps I should just write an article, or maybe a "Hers" column or something on the subject. Then I came into contact with a number of journals, just in passing, nothing that I really read seriously. Why do you think Nin was so severely denounced for having lied in her own diaries? Okay, fine, but how about the work? Could we maybe judge the work? Why do we make these demands on the lives of others that they have to be perfect? Why can't these people be normal human beings like all the rest of us? This is why I'm one who has said, "I have no problem with your written version of reality, if that's the way you want it to be told, fine. I'm not going to point my finger at you and say, 'nasty, hideous liar.' Okay, so you lied, I'll put that in the context of the rest of everything else."
