... Previous Chapter COMMON SENSE by Thomas Paine Chapter III Thoughts on the Present State of the American Affairs. I N the following pages I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense; and have no other preliminaries to settle with the reader, than that he will divest himself of prejudice and prepossession, and suffer his reason and his feelings to determine for themselves; that he will put on, or rather that he will not put off, the true character of a man, and generously enlarge his views beyond the present day. Volumes have been written on the subject of the struggle between England and America. Men of all ranks have embarked in the controversy, from different motives, and with various designs; but all have been ineffectual, and the period of debate is closed. Arms, as the last resource, decide the contest; the appeal was the choice of the king, and the continent hath accepted the challenge. It hath been reported of the late Mr Pelham (who tho' an able minister was not without his faults) that on his being attacked in the house of commons, on the score, that his measures were only of a temporary kind, replied, "they will last my time."

but has a late Norman doorway, and contains a carved and painted pulpit, and in the Kirkham chapel several interesting monuments of the Kirkham family, and a beautiful though damaged stone screen. Among other buildings and institutions are a novitiate of Marist Fathers, a science and art school, a pier with pavilion and concert rooms, and a yacht club. Little remains of an old palace of the bishops of Exeter apart from the 14th-century Bible Tower. Its last tenant was Bishop Miles Coverdale, who in 1535 published the first English translation of the whole Bible. The town owes its popularity to a firm expanse of sand, good bathing facilities, and a temperate climate. PAIL, a bucket, a vessel for carrying water, milk or other liquids, made of wood or metal or other material, varying in size, and usually of a circular shape and somewhat wider at the top than the bottom. The word is of somewhat obscure origin. The present form points to the 0. Eng. paegel, but the sense, that of a small wine-measure, a gill, is difficult to connect with the present one. The earlier forms of the word in Mid. Eng. spell the word payle, paille, and this rather points to a connexion with 0. Fr. paelle, payelle, a small pan or flat dish, from Lat. patella, diminutive of patera, dish. The sense here also presents difficulties, “ pail “in English being always a deep vessel. throbbing, dull, acute, intermittent, stabbing—led to the conclusion among earlier investigators that pains differ in quality. It is, however, generally agreed that all pain is qualitatively the same, though subject to temporal and intensive modification. (See PSYCHOLOGY; AESTHETICS; NERVOUS SYSTEM; SyarPATHETIC SYSTEM.)

You are not logged in. home Username: Password: Thomas Paine is Good. Thomas Pain, an unwashed British alcoholic who failed at every career he tried, decided when he was 38 to leave his wife and go off to America. It was here that his great writing talent was to be revealed. Common Sense was very harsh. It called the king "a sottish, stupid, stubborn, worthless, brutish man" back then, no one did that. He called for revolution and used words like Republic. And his writing style was accessible to the common man. Thomas Jefferson freely admitted that his style took much from Paine particularly the Declaration of Independence. Some of the phrases coined by Paine: "the Rights of Man" , "That government is best which governs least" , "the Age of Reason" , "These are the times that try men's souls" and even "The United States of America" . Life didn't go well for Paine after the Revolution. He travelled to France, where his pamphlet The Rights of Man played an extremely influential role. But when he suggested exile for King Louis XVI instead of death (because the King had helped the Americans), Robespierre put him in prison. He died forgotten. But Thomas Paine galvanized the American and the French Revolution, and all by writing about freedom and individual rights. Yay Thomas Paine.

Mr. Jay will, of course, communicate to you some ciphered letters lately written, and one of this date. My public letter to him contains all the interesting public details. I enclose with the present, some extracts of a letter from Mr. Paine, which he desired me to communicate; your knowledge of the writer will justify my giving you the trouble of these communications, which their interesting nature and his respectability, will jointly recommend to notice. George Washington 10 May 1789 PAINE, THOMAS / OPINION OF Common Sense was, for a while, believed to have been written by Doctor Franklin, and published under the borrowed name of Paine, who had come over with him from England. Lord Bolingbroke's, on the other hand, is a style of the highest order. The lofty, rhythmical, full-flowing eloquence of Cicero. Periods of just measure, their members proportioned, their close full and round. His conceptions, too, are bold and strong, his diction copious, polished and commanding as his subject. His writings are certainly the finest samples in the English language, of the eloquence proper for the Senate. His political tracts are safe reading for the most timid religionist, his philosophical, for those who are not afraid to trust their reason with discussions of right and wrong.
