"My country is the world, and my religion is to do good."
What an amazing book! It covers a range of political subjects, in a manner very clear and concise (for an eighteenth century writer.) It is a detailed explanation and defense of representative republican government, along with a reasoned condemnation of monarchy, based on the concept of universal rights. He condemned inherited monarchy and aristocracy on common-sense grounds, as well - they were parasites descended from conquerors, and nobility no-ability . There is an essay on the definition of "constitution", the significance of having one, and how England does not have one. There are proposals and calculations for tax reform, international disarmament, and social security. The main target audience was the British public, and the main subject was the British political system. "When a set of artful men pretended, through the medium of oracles, to hold intercourse with the Deity, as familiarly as they now march up the back-stairs in European courts, the world was completely under the government of superstition. The oracles were consulted, and whatever they were made to say, became the law; and this sort of government lasted as long as this sort of superstition lasted.

By Paul Lavin When you drop an envelope in a red pillar-box, you walk away confident that your mail will not be read by anyone except the addressee. However, when you send an email, it might be wise to reflect on the differences. According to the organisation Internet Freedom, an agreement being negotiated between the UK's internet service providers (ISPs) and the police will open the email of the UK's eight million Internet users to scrutiny without debate in Parliament or oversight by the courts or the Home Secretary. British police are said to be close to reaching an agreement with ISPs that will enable them to monitor customers' emails and web usage logs. Chris Ellison of Internet Freedom, says: "Following a series of meetings between the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and Internet industry representatives, we understand that both groups have stated a willingness to reach a 'memorandum of understanding' about implementing police access to private data held by ISPs."

For Ry, Boston was too small a stage. His passionate concern was world peace, and his editorials and columns combined a meticulously reasoned argument and an uncompromising focus recalling the very best of the 19th-century Populist writers.
That was the era when Bill Casey, heading the CIA under Ronald Reagan, declared that the battleground against Communism had moved to Central America. Almost forgotten in the anti-Communist frenzy that followed was the extraordinary brutality of government forces during the civil war in El Salvador.
Almost forgotten but not completely. These were things Ry would not let his readers forget. He explained how the roots of conflict grew out of years of repression and exploitation by a small number of oligarchs who profited from their abused campesinos and enjoyed the protection of the U.S. military and intelligence establishment.
Ry traveled to Nicaragua to observe the Sandinista revolution first-hand, and wrote editorials and columns that were not uncritical of the leftist regime. The persuasive, immaculately-reasoned clarity of his writing gave his work a power that drew respect from readers of every political stripe.

Ray Oldenburg is author of The Great Good Place (Paragon House 1989), and teaches sociology at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. His most recent book is Celebrating the Third Place: Inspiring Stories about the "Great Good Places" at the Heart of Our Communities Our Vanishing "Third Places"
PCJ #25, Winter 1997 also reprinted in:
  • for details and ordering information:
    The Great Good Place
"Third places," or "great good places," are the many public places where people can gather, put aside the concerns of home and work (their first and second places), and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation. They are the heart of a community's social vitality and the grassroots of a democracy. Sociology professor and author Ray Oldenburg portrays, probes, and promotes these great good places-coffee houses, cafés, bookstores, hair salons, bars, bistros, and many others both past and present-and offers a vision for their revitalization. Eloquent and visionary, this is a compelling argument for these settings of informal public life as essential for the health both of our communities and ourselves. And its message is being heard: Today, entrepreneurs from Seattle to Florida are heeding the call of The Great Good Place-opening coffee houses, bookstores, community centers, bars and other establishments and proudly acknowledging their indebtedness to this book.
Thomas Paine is author of Scar Vegas a collection of short stories which includes "Unapproved Minutes of the Carthage Vermont, Zoning Board of Adjustment (Harcourt Inc., 2000). Tom Paine Revisited by John F. Baker 11/25/2002
    News > Hot Deals
A portrait of the 18th-century philosopher and political thinker whose work helped foment both the American and French Revolutions has just been signed by Rick Kot Craig Nelson (whose last book, still in stores, was a WWII story, The First Heroes , about the first U.S. air raid on Tokyo). It was a six-figure deal signed with agent Stuart Krichevsky , with U.K. rights being handled by A.P. Watt in London and foreign rights through Andrew Nurnberg. Nelson will tell the dramatic story of a popular writer, once vastly influential, who eventually earned the enmity of the American, British and French people and died ignored and impoverished.
