PATCHEN, Kenneth. The Dark Kingdom.
inscribed by the author to Helen Frith Stickney , a friend. A fine copy, lacking the dust jacket. 190. -. Another copy. Name and address front flyleaf of writer/critic Maxwell Geismar , with the additional notation that the book was received with the compliments of the author. A letter from the publisher attesting to this is folded and stapled to the flyleaf. Some foxing to pages; otherwise near fine in a very good, spine-sunned dust jacket that has some small chips on the front panel and spine crown. PATCHEN, Kenneth. The Journal of Albion Moonlight. NY: United Book Guild, 1944. The first trade edition of his first novel, third book, 345 copies having been self-published in 1941. This edition was published with a printing of 3000 copies. This copy, not signed by Patchen, has the bookplate of poet Kenneth Rexroth on the front pastedown. The lower boards are shelfworn, and the endpages have some minor offsetting. A very good copy in a spine-darkened, price-clipped dust jacket. An excellent literary association between these two major poets.

A LETTER TO GOD
by Kenneth Patchen
This is the monstrous side of him, which makes him appear ruthless and rapacious. Within the snorting dragon, however, there is a gentle prince who suffers at the mention of the slightest cruelty or injustice. A tender soul, who soon learned to envelope himself in a mantle of brim-fire in order to protect his sensitive skin. No American poet is as merciless in his invective as Patchen. There is almost an insanity to his fury and rebellion. A voracious reader, he exposes himself to every influence, even the worst. Like Picasso, he makes use of everything. The innovator and initiator are strong in him. Rather than accept the collaboration of a second-rate artist, he will do the covers for a book himself, a different one for each copy. And how beautiful and original are these individual cover designs* from the hand of a writer who makes no pretense of being a painter or illustrator! How interesting, too, are the typographical arrangements which he dictates for his books! How competent he can be when he has to be his own publisher! (See The Journal of Albion Moonlight.) From a sick bed the poet defies and surmounts all obstacles. He has only to pick up the telephone to throw an editorial staff into a panic. He has the will of a tyrant, the persistence of a bull. "This is the way I want it done!" he bellows. And by God it gets done that way Let me quote a few passages from his answers to certain questions of mine:

Writing, a life-long pursuit, began for Kenneth around his twelfth year when he started keeping a diary. Publication of his writing first appeared in his high school newspaper High School Life, in 1928. His scholastic abilities were complimented by his athletic accomplishments in football and track in high school and in college. Patchen worked two summers in the steel mills with his father and brother to supplement his college scholarship. From 1929-1930 he attended the Alexander Meilejohn's Experimental College at the University of Wisconsin. Following his mentor, Meilejohn to the Commonwealth College in Mena Arkansas, Patchen became disenchanted with academics and left after one semester to travel around the country. Doing odd jobs and traveling in the United States and Canada from 1930-1933, Patchen continued his writing and had two sonnets published in the

Kenneth Patchen,
Naturalist of the Public Nightmare
Kenneth Patchen has recently published two books, Hurrah for Anything and When We Were Here Together Hurrah for Anything are free verse limericks. Patchen has gone back to the world of Edward Lear and interpreted it in terms of the modern sensibility of the disengaged, the modern comic horrors of le monde concentrationnaire . It is as if, not a slick New Yorker correspondent, but the Owl and the Pussycat were writing up Hiroshima. In When We Were Here Together Man thrives where angels die of ecstasy and pigs die of disgust. The contemporary situation is like a long-standing, fatal disease. It is impossible to recall what life was like without it. We seem always to have had cancer of the heart. The first twenty-five years of the century were the years of revolutionary hope. Immediately after the First War, this hope became almost universal among educated people. There was a time when most men expected that soon, very soon, life was going to change; a new, splendid creature was going to emerge from its ancient chrysalis of ignorance, brutality, and exploitation. Everything was going to be different. Even the commonest, most accepted routines of life would be glorified. Education, art, sex, science, invention, everything from clothing to chess would be liberated. All the soilure and distortion of ages of slavery would fall away. Every detail of life would be harmoniously, functionally related in a whole which would be the realization of those absolutes of the philosophers, the Beloved Community wedded to the Idea of Beauty.

The Other Kenneth: Kenneth Patchen and Greatness
by Jessica Schneider, 12/14/02 Not Kenneth Rexroth, is who I mean. Rexroth, more known to be associated with the Beatnik Movement, along with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs, et.al., is a very good poet, and at times even great. I have to say that I would rank Rexroth below the other Kenneth, in this case Patchen. Kenneth Patchen is one of those poets who it is hard to believe has little info about him on the web. Sure there are a handful of websites that promote his legacy, but hardly are there any of his marvelous poems to be found, which is really a shame since his Collected contains some of the best lyrical poems ever written. I would easily place Patchen in a league with the other great lyrical poets, that being Countee Cullen, e.e. cummings, and Pablo Neruda. With the exception of maybe Cullen, the other two poets are rather well known, and have plenty of poems online. I was even shocked to find that on www.plagiarist.com , probably the best resource poetry website to be found, contained no Patchen, (at least none that I could find) thereby causing me to whine and say, “ugh, am I really going to have to type all his poems out?” But the man is worth it, and before I begin my seek essay, here’s a little biographical info: Kenneth Patchen was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1911. From the age of twelve, he kept a diary and read Dante

This 40s-era radio play is delightfully surreal, and might be the first recording of Cage's prepared piano percussion. Amazingly, it hasn't been released until now. "Imaginary Landscape" is another radio piecebut played by oscillators and prepared piano. Phenomenal and moving. (I've recently discovered that the narrative is that of the savior coming back to the City in modern times.)

More about Kenneth Patchen
his endowment was established to support and enhance the Kenneth Patchen Archive, one of the most actively used collections in University Library Special Collections. Kenneth Patchen is one of America's most significant twentieth-century poets, producing more than thirty volumes of literature, including the unique Painted Poems. Since its acquisition from Miriam Patchen in the 1970s, the archive has been used in the outstanding Sierra Club book, What Shall We Do Without Us?, featured in a film by San Francisco public television station KQED, and is constantly sought after for inclusion in national and international exhibitions. This endowment was established in loving memory of David and Ida Berner by their daughters Merryl Cicourel and Rita Bottoms, long-time Head of Special Collections. The Berners were lovers of music and the arts. Their home was brimming with books. They loved and were inspired by the poetry and art of Kenneth Patchen which they enjoyed on the walls of this library's Special Collections.

Biographical Note
Kenneth Patchen, a pioneer in avant-garde poetry, the picture poem, and poetry jazz, was born on December 13, 1911 in Niles, Ohio. Patchen seemed destined to a life of physical labor in the local steel mills before a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin took him away from the industrial Ohio valley and allowed him to take part in the Alexander Meikeljohn Experimental College. After completing a year at the University of Wisconsin and a few months at the Commonwealth College in Mena, Arkansas, he ended his university studies and began three years of traveling and working at odd jobs. In December of 1933, Patchen met Miriam Oikemos, an anti-war organizer and college student from Smith College, whom he married on June 28, 1934. Miriam Patchen was an active participant in her husband's endeavors, working beside him writing bibliographies and biographical sketches under the assumed name Gail Eaton. Miriam also took care of her husband during his intervals of poor health, especially during physical the decline of his last twelve years. Patchen's first book
