London, England A n I n t r o d u c t i o n t o R a y m o n d Q u e n e a u Writers with rejected manuscripts should take a leaf out of Raymond Queneau's book. When he wrote L'encyclopedie des sciences inexactes, based on his researches into les fous litteraires (Literary Madmen), he was unable to get it accepted. However, with a charecteristic piece of lateral thinking, he incorporated it into his novel Les enfants du Limon as an unpublishable manuscript by a character called Chambernac, therby getting it into print. Later on, Queneau had no problem getting published. He became one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century. Regrettably, however, outside France his works remain largely unknown. Far the most popular is Zazie dans le metro - which has sold over 500,000 copies. Published in 1959 it won the Prix de l'humour noir and achieved further fame through the 1960 screen version directed by Louis Malle. One of Queneau's main delights is playing with language and Zazie is exemplary, employing phonetic spelling and phraseology. The story's first word is "Doukipudonktan?" - a compression of D'ou qu'ils puent donc tant? (which Barbara Wright, a regular translator of Queneau, interprets as "How canaystinksotho?" A variation on these concertinaed words are a vast range of neologisms: for example, L'orama - a more limited panorama; and somnivore - sleep-destroying.

22. La Letteratura Combinatoria - II.2. Raymond Queneau
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/6043/queneau.htm
Parte seconda: La letteratura combinatoria
2. Raymond Queneau

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer The New Yorker TLS George Craig - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review The Last Days is in many respects an autobiographical novel. The main character, Vincent Tuquedenne, is a student, whose academic life and career closely follow Queneau's own. A student of philosophy at the Sorbonne, an intellectual lad from the country not entirely comfortable in the big city in the 1920s, Tuquedenne proceeds somewhat aimlessly and without clear ambition. Well, he has ambition (to learn languages, to read even more books), but these best laid plans often come to naught. He muddles through, better than most: a fairly typical student-life of the period between the wars. The books is an interesting portrait of Paris in the twenties, following the paths of Tuquedenne and several of his fellow students, as well as several other, older Paris characters. Told in short, episodic chapters, covering the course of several years Queneau introduces the reader to many aspects of Parisian student and cafe life. Most of this is fairly interesting (though hardly riveting), and a few of the episodes are quite humorous and others poignant. Certainly he pulls the book together nicely in the end, as the paths of the characters have become clearly delineated, their fates now fairly obvious.

Queneau, Raymond 1903-76, French author and critic. He was an advocate of surrealism during the middle and late 1920s. Queneau is best known for his manipulations of style and language and his use of street slang in literary works. He often parodied traditional literary forms, as in his pastiche Exercices de style (1947). His novels include Le Chiendent (1933; tr. The Bark Tree, Un Rude Hiver (1940; tr. A Hard Winter, Pierrot, mon ami Le Dimanche de la vie [the Sunday of life] (1952), and the comic best-seller (1959; tr. Zazie, 1960). He has also written a great deal of poetry, and many of his novels contain extended verse passages. See his Selected Poems (tr. 1970).
