AHB home page TLG code for Greek text Sallust And The Grappling Irons At Cyzicus John E. Thorburn, Jr. (Baylor University) The Ancient History Bulletin F ollowing the defeat of Cotta in 74 BC at Chalcedon, Mithridates besieged by land and sea the island town of Cyzicus, which had suffered significant losses in aiding the Romans at Chalcedon. However, the Lucullus-led Romans defeated Mithridates by counter-blockading his army. The most detailed extant accounts of this siege appear in Appian's Mithridatica and Plutarch's Lucullus . However, both Appian and Plutarch show familiarity with the account reported by Sallust in his Histories , which, were it extant in its entirety, would have been our most detailed survey of the siege. Several fragments of Sallust's account of the events at Cyzicus survive and this paper, which examines one these fragments (3.35 ), suggest an interpretation not yet proposed by modern scholars. The fragment is preserved as citation 327 in the Exempla Elocutionum of Arusianus Messius, a grammarian of the late fourth century AD, who takes his examples from Terence, Vergil, Cicero, and Sallust. Arusianus quotes Sallust's passage for its use of the ablative supine with the adjective 'idonea.' The full citation reads: 'IDONEUM factu, Sal. hist. III manus ferreas et alia adnexu idonea inicere' ('Suitable to do, Sallust Histories book III, 'they hurled grappling irons and other things suitable for the connection').

TIME: Tues-Thurs: 12:00-1:30
PLACE: Williams Hall G - 1 (Tues)
Williams Hall G - 6 (Thurs)
Description: The seminar will consist of a series of introductory lectures and discussions on Sallust, early Roman historiography, political careers in the late Republic, and the political ideologies of the age. There will be a basic introduction to the manuscript tradition. The peculiarities of Sallustian style will be outlined. The main series of class sessions will be devoted to the translation and analysis of set parts of the text. The intent is to read all of the Bellum Catilinae, Bellum Iugurthinae, the Speeches and the Letters of Pompey and Mithridates from the fragments of the Histories, and the Epistulae ad Caesarem senem. If only for comic relief, we shall also read the Invectiva in Ciceronem. Translation sessions will alternate with classes allocated for the presentation of research papers. To assist with the latter, a preliminary research bibliography on Sallust will be distributed to the class.

Horti Sallustiani
Article on pp271-272 of
Samuel Ball Platner (as completed and revised by Thomas Ashby):
A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome

London Oxford University Press
H ORTI S ALLUSTIANI the gardens of the historian Sallust in Region VI. It is possible that the nucleus of these gardens was the horti that Caesar had owned ad portam Collinam (Ps. Cic. resp. in Sall. 19). Sallust spent on them much of the wealth that he had amassed in Numidia, and they probably remained in the family until the time of Tiberius ( supra, p216, n1 CIL vi.9005), when they became imperial property ( Tac. Ann. xiii.47 CIL vi.5863, 8670-8672; xv.7249-7250; Dig. xxx.39.8), but they seem to have been open to some, if not to the general public (Ps. Sen. ad Paul. 1). They were a favourite resort of Vespasian (Cass. Dio lxv.10.4) and Aurelian (Hist. Aug. Aurel. 49) . Nerva died here (Chron. 146), and they were still a resort in the fourth century (Incert. auct. Panegyr. in Const. 14 (ed. Teubn. 300,26)). In 410 they were sacked by the Goths under Alaric (Procop. B. Vand. i.2). In these gardens was a conditorium , or sepulchral vault (Plin. NH vii.75)

57. Sallust
sallust, Bellum Catilinae. The point. In reading sallust, you shouldconsider not only his style but his choice of form and topic.
http://www.columbia.edu/itc/classics/zetzel/Sallust.htm
Sallust, Bellum Catilinae The two assigned excerpts are the most famous parts of the BC , the preface and the debate between Caesar and Cato on the punishment of the conspirators. For another part of this debate, look at Cicero, In Catilinam Even though there is (probably) only a gap of nine years (51-42 BCE) between De re publica and BC , the two texts are worlds apart, separated by civil war, the assassination of Julius Caesar, and the beginnings of the Second Triumvirate (November 43) and the proscriptions. Sallust's ethical ideas and his ideal of the Roman Republic do not seem very far from Cicero's, but the language in which he expresses them are very different: Sallust is in many respects an anti-Ciceronian, and many people have thought (perhaps rightly) that his choice of subjectthe depiction of the most famous event in Cicero's career with so little emphasis on Cicerois not without point. In reading Sallust, you should consider not only his style but his choice of form and topic. How is this work different from earlier Roman historiography? What is his relationship to his stylistic model (at least one of them), Cato? To Thucydides? What reasons does he give in the preface for undertaking this workand how is it similar to, or different from, Cicero's in De oratore ? What are his views of the causes of Decline and its consequences and possible remedies? (For this, look not only at the preface, but at the comparison of Caesar and Cato at the end of the debate.) And why is the conspiracy of Catiline so significant?

Sallust, Bellum Iugurthinum 1
