Award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer calculates the past and future of SF
By Glover Wright obert J. Sawyer has been called "the dean of Canadian science fiction" by the Ottawa Citizen . He is the only writer in history to win the top science fiction awards in the United States, Japan, France and Spain. He has also won the Arthur Ellis Award from the Crime Writers of Canada, as well as seven Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards, or "Auroras." He has received six nominations for the Hugo, science fiction's international readers' choice award. His award-winning Web site has been called "the best author's page on the Internet"; it contains over 900,000 words of short stories, sample chapters, articles, interviews and reviews. Sawyer is past president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), the world's oldest and largest association of science-fiction professionals. He was the first non-American ever to hold that post. The author was gracious enough to consent to an interview, the questions of which range from religion to this year's Hugo Awards, as well as allowing a few glimpses at his personal life.

Interview with Robert J. Sawyer
Rob Sawer, possibly one of the most heavily grounded in "science" authors of science fiction we've ever talked to, joins us to discuss his latest series of books dealing with Neanderthals and Human evolution. The first book, Hominids , is out in paperback and the next book, Humans , will be out in hard cover very soon. Following quickly on their heels will be Hybrids, the conclusion (?) of the series. From what we leaned during this interview, these books will be fascinating reads. Rob has won many awards, including both the Nebula and Hugo, for his many works, for which you can read sample chapters off his website at www.sfwriter.com
His Bio:
Robert J. Sawyer — called "the dean of Canadian science fiction" by The Ottawa Citizen and "just about the best science-fiction writer out there these days" by The Denver Rocky Mountain News — is the only writer in history to win the top SF awards in the United States, Japan, France, and Spain. He's also won an Arthur Ellis Award from the Crime Writers of Canada and as well as seven Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards ("Auroras"), and he's been nominated six times for the Hugo, SF's international readers' choice award. Maclean's: Canada's Weekly Newsmagazine says, "By any reckoning, Sawyer is among the most successful Canadian authors ever," and Barnes and Noble calls him "the leader of SF's next-generation pack."

The Nebula Award Winning author of The Terminal Experiment think of himself as a golden-age author updated for the Nineties.
by Delos: I've just heard you've won the Nebula award with your novel THE TERMINAL EXPERIMENT, which is going to be published in May here in Italy. What's your feeling about winning such an important award? Were you expecting this result? Sawyer: Without a doubt, winning the Nebula Award is the biggest thing that's ever happened to me professionally. I was totally surprised to win. This was my first-ever Nebula nomination; usually, an author is nominated several times before actually winning. Also, this was an award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers OF AMERICA, and I'm not an American. Rather, I'm a Canadian, and the book is set entirely in Canada. I sort of expected a little prejudice against the book because of that. Also, mine was the only one of the six nominees to be originally published in paperback, and the only one for which the publisher didn't mail out a large quantity of copies to SFFWA members, trying to garner votes; usually hardcovers have an advantage in the awards. When they opened the envelope and called my name at the awards banquet, I was absolutely shocked. Delos: In your opinion, which one of the ingredients you have used for your novel has been the reason for winning the Nebula award this year?

Conclusion: Worth Reading Sawyer makes a valiant attempt to write a science fiction story that is as much about real human relationships as it is about science. While this is a worthy goal, Sawyer only partially succeeds in attaining it. His characters and situtations reminded me too much of a Lifetime made for TV movie (marital troubles, child abuse, eating disorders, sexual harrassment, repressed memories, etc) for comfort. In the end I just didn't really find that I cared much about anyone in this story. The rest of the plot was likewise made up cliched elements (first contact with aliens, collective consciousness, artifical intelligence, etc), but they were woven together into a mostly entertaining tale. My main complaint is actually there was a lot of potential in this book that just wasn't explored. I got the feeling I was reading a novella instead of a novel. It is the year 2017, and Earth has been receiving daily transmissions from Alpha Centuri for several years. These abruptly stop, triggering a mad dash to decipher their meaning. Heather Davis is a psychologist working on this problem. Her estranged husband is Kyle Graves, a computer scientist specializing in quantum computing. As Heather works to discover the meaning of the signals, her family life is in a state of major upheaval. The resolution of the family problems are really the heart of the book, and when they come to their conclusion, it basically fizzles out. As I said, the premises that Sawyer set up in this story were so full of potential that I was expecting a lot more. I was very disappointed when I didn't get it.

December 2000 Commentary - Looking Back; Looking Ahead by Robert J. Sawyer I owe my career as a science fiction writer to 2001: A Space Odyssey . My father took me to see it in Cinerama when it first opened in Toronto, early in 1968. I was just seven years old, and the film captivated me from first frame to last - and I wasn't the only Toronto resident who felt that way. The theater we saw it at was the Glendale, where had its longest continuous run in the world: two years, four months, and five days. In the intervening decades, I've seen twenty-four more times on the big screen (I don't count viewings on video; this is a film that demands to be experienced in a theater). For a child growing up in the 1960s, there were many influences that might have led to a career in science fiction: the original Star Trek was having its first run, Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation shows, such as

THE TERMINAL EXPERIMENT is a high tech thriller, with a single, but very strong, science fiction premise. If this was his first novel, rather than the latest addition to a short, but critically acclaimed, list of novels published over the last few years, his publishers might have thought twice about pushing it as SF. with a different cover, and a slightly altered marketing approach, this could have trodden the well-worn path of the likes of Tom Clancy et al. But then that might have been a risk, and after all he's got a strong SF pedigree.
Over the past while I've read several reviews of Sawyer's work, both novel and short fiction and about every one of them agrees one point, he's a talented writer with an eye for a good story. Having read the Terminal Experiment, there's no way I would dream of arguing with them.
Peter Hobson is an engineer who, while developing an EEG scanner that reads more accurately and without need for electrodes, discovers an electrical field which leaves the human brain at the moment of death. When he releases his findings, the field is immediately dubbed the soulwave: Peter has provided the first positive proof of the existence of the soul and the existence of life after death.

Every once in a while you run across a novel that's both an enjoyable reading experience and an intellectually stimulating one. Let me share one with you.
It's called "Hominids", by Robert J. Sawyer, the Canadian science ficton novelist who got a good deal of attention with his previous novel "Calculating God" (the 2001 Hugo Award runner-up) a couple of years ago. The premise in a nutshell; scientists in two different universes whose fates diverged 400 centuries ago, stumble on a bridge between them. The contrast between those universes, and the civilizations they developed and nurtured on their respective Earths, form the crux of the story-and an interesting window on our own world and times, in the manner any good science fiction provides.
A really good, brisk read, which I found I wanted to continue until I'd reached the end of this story and the bridge to the next one (which will appear some time next winter).

Having read this authors 'Starplex', a thoroughly good space opera romp, and enjoyed it very much, I was looking forward to picking this book off the shelf.
The book starts well with an unidentified alien spacecraft downed in the ocean and the predictable race to see which nation will get there and make contact first. Again predictably it is the Americans who come out on top of that particular wrangle.
Sawyer spends some time building the character of what seems to be a leading player, only to kill him off after 43 pages. This left me felling bereft for a while because no other character was real enough to take his place at this point. It took another couple of chapters to round out other characters sufficiently to maintain my interest. The aliens, 'Tosoks', are not really solid enough to hold the interest either. They have some unique physical attributes which become more significant towards the end of the story, but in this book at least, Sawyer has a tendency to anthropomorphise, which grates a little.
