I don't know much about Robert J. Sawyer yet, but I will say one thing. He snagged a great domain name! ( sfwriter.com ). In fact, as of this update (January, 2002), the most notable thing about Robert Sawyer is his web site, which he takes very justifiable pride in. Well, he is also a popular and published writer, a six time hugo award finalist, all that kind of thing. Little stuff like that.

Factoring Humanity
by Robert J. Sawyer
Factoring Humanity is the latest novel by Hugo Award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer. It's very similar to Carl Sagan's Contact in many ways: a female researcher deciphers an alien message into a blueprint; she builds a construct from the diagram; cosmic dippiness results. Heather Davis is a psychology professor who specializes in the alien radio messages that began arriving from Alpha Centauri in 2007. The first few messages were quickly translated into simple chemical formulae, but when the following messages proved indecipherable, public interest faded. Ten years after the arrival of the first message, the alien transmission ends. At this point, Heather has been separated from her husband Kyle since the suicide of their older daughter a year ago; now her personal life is shattered again when their remaining daughter accuses Kyle of molesting her. The secrets in the alien code turn out to be the key to proving Kyle's guilt or innocence. The alien contact is actually tangential to the exploration of the nature of human consciousness. Sawyer also does some interesting things with current pop science issues, including RSA encryption and the possible quantum nature of consciousness. He pays a great deal of attention to the problem of factoring very large numbers, and the effect a generic solution would have on computer security worldwide.

Sci-fi rooted in reality, says author Robert Sawyer
TORONTO (CP) Canadian author Robert Sawyer figures he and other science-fiction writers are doing society a favor by helping people get a grip on what's going on around them. "Rational, realistic, skeptical, logical thinking is the only sensible way to deal with reality," Sawyer has said. "Science fiction underscores that way of thinking." Headlines have recently been full of people who are choosing other ways of dealing with reality the Heaven's Gate cult members who committed suicide last month in San Diego, thinking they could hitch a ride on a UFO following the Hale-Bopp comet; the Solar Temple cult members who burned to death in Quebec, believing they were going on to something greater. Less dramatic but more pervasive are people who put stock in crystals and tarot cards, astrology and past life regression. Sawyer says it's easy to see why society would take a step backward into old beliefs when humanity keeps getting slapped in the face with its own insignificance. "Every time you turn around you see some new photo from the Hubble telescope or some new estimate of how old the universe is," he said in an interview.

"Despite the fact that I write at length about what people would consider to be metaphysical issues, I'm a rationalist. I think that the lesson that one should take from science fiction is that there's nothing that's outside of the boundaries of science... The favorite review of my book is one from the Toronto Star which says, 'Sawyer forces us to grapple with questions that we used to think were too metaphysical to deal with rationally.' That's what I think good science fiction is: the rational approach to the metaphysical."

Who is Robert J. Sawyer?
Robert J. Sawyer is Canada's only full-time science fiction author. Author of 12 novels (with 3 more pending), winner of the Nebula award as well as many other fine awards, and former President of the Science Fiction Writers' of America. I had the pleasure of meeting Rob at Eeriecon III, in Niagra Falls, NY. I had scheduled an interview with him because I was incredibly impressed with his work, and wished to get his views on various topics. We discussed writing (both in general and his work specifically), as well as the themes of what science is meant to do, immortality, evolution, and other topics. It was honestly some of the most fun I've had in a long time, and I was as impressed with him in person as I was with the fine stories that he tells.

Robert J. Sawyer : Frameshift
There is science fiction and there is fiction about science. The two do not often meet convincingly. With Frameshift , Robert Sawyer seems to have managed to bridge the gap between the two, and in the process produced an engrossing and satisfying read. Frameshift starts out like a thriller, something that Michael Crichton might have written had he less of an eye on a book's Hollywood potential. Sawyer combines a number of unlikely ingredients: a series of unexplained murders, the Human Genome Project, a Nazi war criminal, a medical insurance company with some peculiar clauses, a Nobel prize-winner with an obsession for Neanderthals, a woman with limited telepathy. Into these basic ingredients, he mixes a Canadian research geneticist with a problem (he has a fifty percent chance of dying prematurely from Huntington's disease), who combines with all of the above and acts as catalyst in a dense and twisting plot with some surprising results. "I know, I know - it seemed crazy that the alien had come to Toronto. Sure, the city is popular with tourists, but you'd think a being from another world would head for the United Nations - or maybe to Washington. Didn't Klaatu go to Washington in Robert Wise's movie The Day the Earth Stood Still?
Of course, one might also think it's crazy that the same director who did West Side Story would have made a good science-fiction flick. Actually, now that I think about it, Wise directed three SF films, each more stolid than its predecessor."
"Forgive me, but you possess little my associates or I might desire." Hollus paused, as if thinking. Then he made a twirling gesture with one of his hands, as though motioning for me to turn around. "Of course, if you want, I could give you an anal probe..."
There were gasps from the small crowd that had assembled in the lobby. I tried to raise my nonexistent eyebrows.

There is certainly a lot of deep mathematics discussed in this `first contact' novel, as well as a good deal of controversial physics and psychology. Still, in the end, I did not find it especially satisfying. It was as if all of this clever stuff was put together into a far-less-than-clever mess. First, let me tell you about the math, page by page.
  • On page 47 there is a discussion of factorization of large numbers and the role that quantum computers can play. (However, since Kyle believes in the many universe interpretation of quantum physics, it is described in a ridiculous way: the computation is done by infinitely many computers in infinitely many different universes.)
  • On page 79 we are given the symbolic expression of the right-hand side of the Drake equation for estimating the number of radio-broadcasting civilizations in the galaxy as well as a description of the terms.
  • Page 81-84, back to this crazy sounding description of factorization on quantum computer. In particular, it is argued that since the number of computations involved in factoring the huge number he asked his computer to factor is larger than the number of atoms in the universe, it is proof that the computation is done in multiple universes. (Not really, it could just argue that a single atom or particle is capable of doing lots of traditional computations by virtue of its quantum nature!) But, it doesn't matter, because it only finds two factors (though he expects more) which (according to Kyle) could have been done using only the number of atoms in this universe.

Though it is considerably less mathematical than Factoring Humanity , it holds together a bit better as a novel. Here, we encounter aliens who view the existence of god (a creator of the universe) as a scientifically proven fact. Together with these aliens, a representative of humanity `goes to meet his maker' in the far reaches of space where god is apparently preventing a supernova from destroying the Earth. The mathematics involved is merely the argument, voiced recently in genuiune scientific forums, that the parameters of the universe are just right for life and therefore are evidence that the universe was created with us in mind. I'm afraid I must counter that this argument is somewhat misguided. Its proponents successfully argue that stars, water, and other things upon which our lives depend would not exist if the parameters of theoretical physics were altered more than slightly. However, they cannot really expect me to believe that they can tell whether some sort of life would develop in these alternate universes. In particular, I seriously doubt that if I gave them the parameters that we believe describe this universe that they would be able to successfully predict all of this exciting stuff that happens on the human scale without their advance knowledge (a cheat sheet if you will) that comes from having experienced and studied it in person. I strongly suspect that in at least
