Relatives Here you can find short biographies of people who played an important role in Mary Shelley's life:
  • her mother Mary Wollstonecraft
  • her father William Godwin
  • her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley
Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) Mary Wollstonecraft does not grow up in a very harmonious household. Her father is a heavy drinker and tyrannises her mother. As she witnesses and sometimes even tries to stop the abuse, it was perhaps inevitable that Mary would turn out to be one of the first feminists. At the age of 27, she writes her first article "Thoughts on the Education of Daughters" in 1786. It does not take long for people to recognise her for her remarkable writing skills. Besides writing original works, she also writes reviews and does translations. In earlier works, Mary Wollstonecraft writes about "the disabilities and sufferings of the English lower classes" . But in her most famous works, Mary focuses more on the oppression of women. This is the central theme of her most famous work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman . Never before were the sufferings and indignities of women so passionately described. In writing this work, Mary "had found the cause she was to pursue for the rest of her life."

The Londonian daughter of the writer and political journalist William Godwin, famous for his An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793), published her first poem at the age of ten.
When she was sixteen, she escaped to France and Switzerland with the poet Percy Shelley, whom she married in 1816. Frankenstein came into the world then, on the shores of Lake Geneva. In 1818 the Shelleys left England for Italy.
Percy Shelley drowned in 1822 in the Bay of La Spezia, and Mary returned to England suffering from nervous breakdowns after his death and, later, the loss of her daughter.
In England, she devoted herself to the educationof her son, continuing her career as a professional writer. Mary Shelley was not only famous for her banned Frankenstein. She authored many fine literary works.

Mary and Maria by Mary Wollstonecraft
Matilda by Mary Shelley
The Pickering Women's Classics Edited by Janet Todd This book brings together three extraordinary novels by an extraordinary pair, Mary Wollstonecraft - radical, feminist and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman - and Mary Shelley, her daughter, author of Frankenstein . Although Mary Shelley never knew her mother who died giving birth to her, the concerns of the daughter in Matilda reflect upon the convictions of the mother in Mary and Maria - that women have the right to equality of education and opportunity, to fair treatment in marriage and under the law, and, most controversially, that women have a duty to themselves to reject the trappings and false allure of traditional definitions of femininity and embrace a richer, wider notion of womanhood. Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) is generally recognised as the mother of the feminist movement. She expressed her ideas in her first novel, Mary, a Fiction

Biography
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851)
Mary is born in Somers Town, Great Britain, in 1797 to well-known parents: author and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and philosopher William Godwin . Unfortunately, Wollstonecraft dies as the result of Mary's birth. Mary is therefore raised by her father and a much resented stepmother. When Mary is sixteen she meets the young poet Percy Bysshe Shelley , a devotee of her father's teachings. Together with Mary's stepsister, they run off to continental Europe several times, not hindered by the fact that Shelley was already married. In 1816, they go abroad again, this time spending time with Byron and his friend Polidori in Geneva. There Byron suggests that they should all write a ghost story. Mary writes Frankenstein , the only story of the four that was ever to be published as a novel. Later that same year, Percy's wife drowns herself: Percy and Mary marry in December 1816. The last years of married life are filled with disaster for Mary. Her half sister dies as do two of her children. Mary becomes depressed, a tendency she probably inherited from her mother. She is only partly relieved by the birth of Percy, their only surviving child. Mary and Percy eventually move to Italy where Percy drowns during a sailing trip in 1822. Mary is determined to keep the memory of her late husband alive. She publishes several editions of Percy's writings and adds notes and prefaces to them.

Extract from a review of The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol Adams Dismemberment of a text can be achieved in a number of ways, including ignoring the text entirely, failing to acknowledge the vegetarian message in the text, or trivializing it, and by distorting the message so that it is consistent with and indistinguishable from the dominant discourse of meat. Adams argues that feminist literary critics and historians are among those who have dismembered such texts, and in using some of the same tools that patriarchy uses to silence feminists texts, these feminists have silenced some of their won feminist vegetarian sisters. Mary Shelly's FRANKENSTEIN is a case in point. FRANKENSTEIN has received an enormous amount of critical attention over the past two decades from feminists and other critics, all of whom have neglected to explore the vegetarian themes in the novel. Frankenstein's creature is a vegetarian. Adams says: "The Creature's vegetarianism not only confirms its inherent, original benevolence, but conveys Mary Shelley's precise rendering of themes articulated by a group of her contemporaries whom I call `Romantic vegetarians'" (p. 109). The story "bears the vegetarian word," as Adams puts it, in a variety of ways: by alluding to the literal words of famous, historical vegetarians; by allowing fictional characters to allude to famous vegetarians; by translating vegetarian texts; by using language which reveals the function of the absent referent. Shelley grew up in an intellectual environment in which vegetarianism was much discussed and often adopted by such writers and activists as
