Optimistic View of America J. hector st. john de crevecoeur, Letters froman American Farmer, 1793. What then is the American, this new man?
    http://www.civics-online.org/teachers/crev.html
To many people, Europeans and Americans alike the long-term survival of the United States as a nation was questionable. The young country's most noteworthy characteristics-its vast size, its democratic government, the diversity of its population-were viewed by some observers as fatal weaknesses, while others considered these very traits to be the nation's greatest strengths. Read the passages below written by Europeans who traveled to America and wrote their opinions about its future upon their return home. Then answer the questions that follow. Pessimistic View of America - Andrew Burnaby, British clergyman in Burnaby's Travels Through North America, 1775 America is formed for happiness, but not for empire. In a route of 1,200 miles I did not see a single person who asked for charity. But I saw insurmountable causes for weakness that will prevent America from being a powerful state. The Southern Colonies (Maryland, the smallest, being the only exception) will never be thickly populated. These colonies have no set boundaries and extend westward indefinitely. People, therefore, rather than take up too laborious occupations, will gradually move westward and settle upon fresh lands which are said to be more fertile. There, with the service of a slave or two, they may enjoy all the satisfaction of an easy and lazy independence. Hence, the lands along the coast will remain thin of inhabitants.... The Northern Colonies have other difficulties and disadvantages to struggle with. Their boundaries being already defined, they will undoubtedly become very populous. Though people will readily move back toward the frontier of their own colony, they will not be so easily induced to settle beyond that colony, where different laws and policies prevail.

Hofstra University Ideology and Early American Literature Purpose of course:
Cultural attitudes have deep historical roots. In this course we will be examining some of the founding texts of the American canon, reading them not only for the ideological picture they give of an emerging market culture, but also for the features of that culture they deliberately exclude. By understanding how earlier generations made sense of their often bewildering world, we may be able to apply those lessons to our own. Class participation: The class will be conducted as a modified seminar: students will be responsible for carrying on class discussion. Each week, several students will read brief commentaries in addition to the primary texts, using both to reflect on a study question I will provide. These students will lead the discussion, to which we will all contribute. Written work: Discussion leaders will submit a 4-page typewritten essay on their findings in the week following their assigned topic. Everyone will write four such essays during the course of the semester. There will also be a written, in-class midterm and a final exam. Grades: Four essays .................. 40%

Crevecoeur, J. Hector St. John Letters from an American Farmer (1782). Other letters, found in 1922, were published as Sketches of Eighteenth Century America (1925). The two books give outstanding descriptions of American rural life of the period. He wrote, over the signature Agricola, agricultural articles for American newspapers. He introduced the culture of European crops, notably alfalfa, into America and of the American potato into Normandy. As French consul in New York City (from 1783) he sought to improve commercial relations between France and the United States. He lived in France from 1790. See biography by T. L. Philbrick (1970).

    Letters from an American Farmer
Advertisement [To the first edition, 1782] The following Letters are the genuine production of the American Farmer whose name they bear. They were privately written to gratify the curiosity of a friend; and are made public, because they contain much authentic information, little known on this side the Atlantic: they cannot therefore fail of being highly interesting to the people of England, at a time when everybody's attention is directed toward the affairs of America. Should our Farmer's letters be found to afford matter of useful entertainment to an intelligent and candid publick, a second volume, equally interesting with those now published, may soon be expected.
Dedication to the Abbe Raynal, F.R.S. auspices of your name. Let the sincerity of the motives which urge me, prevent you from thinking that this well meant address contains aught but the purest tribute of reverence and affection. There is, no doubt, a secret communion among good men throughout the world; a mental affinity connecting them by a similitude of sentiments: then why, though an American, should not I be permitted to share in that extensive intellectual consanguinity? Yes, I do: and though the name of a man who possesses neither titles nor places, who never rose above the humble rank of farmer, may appear insignificant; yet, as the sentiments I have expressed, are also the eccho of those of my countrymen; on their behalf, as well as on my own, give me leave to subscribe myself

    LANDS OF OPPORTUNITY
    THE THIRTEEN COLONIES
The British, French, Spanish, and Swedish explorers who traveled through the wilderness of the east coast of the New World, documented their discoveries and adventures for a European public anxious to hear about the exotic lands. Combining science and adventure, these books became the earliest histories of America. From the early colonial period, the settlers sent back reports of their progress, stressing the opportunities for freedom and prosperity in the new lands. By the beginning of the Republic, state histories could document a hundred years of progress.
