A P R I L 1 9 7 8
by Paul Theroux T HE Ritz bar was empty, quiet, but crazed with decoration. I tried to get a fix on it. It was white, with a Bischof gleam, gold-trimmed mirrors that repeated its Edwardian flourishes of filigree and cigar wrappers, frosty statuettes, velvet and the illusion of crystal in etched glass. The chocolate box of a whore's boudoir. I guessed I would have to lie on my belly to get the shot I wanted, but then I noticed in all that tedious gilt a man behind the bar polishing a goblet. He wore a white dinner jacket and was bald; his head shone. I saw at once how the crown of his skull gathered the whole room and miniaturized it, and he wore it like a map pasted to his dome. Shoot him nodding and you've got a vintage Weegee.
"A very good evening to you, Madam."
"Same here," I said. "A large gin and tonic."
"Kew," he said, and handed it over.
"You're welcome," I said. I expected him to take a swing at me, but he only picked up another goblet and continued his polishing. What a head! It made the wide-angle lens obsolete. But I didn't have the heart to do him. In fact, since arriving in London I had begun to feel winded and wheezy, a shortness of breath and a sort of tingling in my fingers and toes I put down to heartburn and jet lag. by Paul Theroux I T goes without saying that the Orient Express is the most famous train in the world. Like the the Trans-Siberian, it links Europe with Asia, which accounts for some of its romance. But it has also been hallowed by fiction: Lady Chatterley's husband took it; so did Hercule Poirot and James Bond; Graham Greene sent some of his prowling unbelievers on it, even before he took it himself ("As I couldn't take a train to Istanbul the best I could do was buy a record of Honegger's Pacific 231," Greene writes in the introduction to Stamboul Train
In the end I stopped wondering why so many writers had used this train as a setting for criminal intrigues, since in most respects the Orient Express really is murder.
My compartment was a cramped two-berth closet with an intruding ladder. I swung my suitcase in, and when I had done this there was no room for me. The conductor showed me how to kick my suitcase under the lower berth. He hesitated, hoping to be tipped.
"Anybody else in here?" It had not occurred to me that I would have company; the conceit of the long-distance traveler is the belief that he is going so far that he will be alone. Return to the Interview with Paul Theroux

Extensive traveling induces a feeling of encapsulation, and travel, so broadening at first, contracts the mind. Fiction gives us a second chance that life denies us. I should have worked just long enough to discover that I didn't like it. The realization that he is white in a black country, and respected for it, is the turning point in the expatriate's career. He can either forget it, or capitalize on it. Most choose the latter.

Beautifully written travel book Disadvantages: None that I can think of From the very first paragraph of this book you can tell this is a “travelogue” of distinction. This may be a book over 20 years old that basically tells us about a bloke on a train journey, but unlike so many travel writers, Paul Theroux takes you with him. I was gripped from page one. This is no sloppily written, banal account of someone’s year in a small village in Italy/Spain/Greece and an amusing incident at the local festival. This is real travel.

    Theroux, Paul
American novelist and travel writer, known for novels based on his experiences abroad, which are punctuated with his personal commentary. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, Theroux traveled to Italy after graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1963. For the next few years, Theroux taught English at the University of Urbino in Urbino, Italy, and was a member of the faculty of English at Soche Hill College in the southeast African country of Malawi. In 1965 he left Malawi to work in Uganda, where he met Trinidadian writer V. S. Naipaul, whose depressed but comic view of the world made a significant impression on the young Theroux. In Uganda, Theroux published his first novel, Waldo (1966), which tells the surreal story of a boy's journey after leaving a school for delinquents.
In 1968 Theroux joined the University of Singapore, where he worked for three years in the Department of English. Throughout this time, he wrote short articles, as well as a number of novels, including Fong and the Indians (1968) and Girls at Play (1969). Soon after the publication of Jungle Lovers (1971), which was based on his experiences in Malawi, Theroux moved with his wife and two children to England.
During his time of residence in England Theroux wrote a dozen volumes of highly praised fiction, including V. S. Naipaul: An Introduction to his Works (1972); Saint Jack (1973); travel novels such as The Great Railway Bazaar (1975); and two of his most successful novels-The Family Arsenal (1976) and The Mosquito Coast (1982), which in 1986 was made into a motion picture starring American actor Harrison Ford. Theroux remained in England for several years, dividing his time between households there and in the United States, a situation that served as the subject of the novel My Secret Life (1989). Millroy the Magician (1993) compounds several of Theroux's favorite themes, telling the story of a magician and health-food sage through the eyes of a young girl whose slow sexual awakening provides much of the narrative drive of the novel.
