van Gulik, Robert Poets and Murder A Judge Dee Mystery . x, 174 p. 4-3/4 x 7 1968 Paper OBE $8.00 0-226-84876-0 Fall 1996 Master detective Judge Dee sets out to solve a puzzling double murder and discovers that complicated passions lurk beneath the seemingly tranquil landscape of academic life. A student has been murdered; a beautiful poetess is accused of whipping her maidservant to death; and further mysteries lie in the shadows of the Shrine of the Black Fox. "The China of old, in Mr. van Gulik's skilled hands, comes vividly alive again." Allen J. Hubin, New York Times Book Review "If you have not yet discovered Judge Dee, I envy you that initial pleasure . . . the discovery of a great detective story. For the magistrate of Poo-yan belongs in that select group headed by Sherlock Holmes." Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times "Pleasing as a cup of jasmine tea." Parade of Books Robert van Gulik (1910-67), a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture, drew his plots from the popular detective novels that appeared in seventeenth-century China. Robert van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century. "Delightful novels, so scrupulously in the classic Chinese manner yet so nicely equipped with everything to satisfy the modern reader." New York Times "Entertaining, instructive and oddly impressive. Judge Dee, the officers of his tribunal and the people with whom he and they are concerned are interesting folk, and the world of crime, mystery, violence, lust, corruption and ceremony in which they move is formidably picturesque." Chinees in China, Japanner in Tokio.

Bahasa Indonesia Nederlands English Español Português Archived: 18/01/01 Homepage RNW Homepage Culture Archive Overview Robert van Gulik: The Dutch Mandarin By Dheera Sujan, 29 September 2000 The genre of detective fiction has been officially celebrating its 100 th anniversary this year, but in actual fact, it's much older than a mere century. As with so many other things, the Chinese beat the rest of the world to it when they created Judge Dee, a magistrate of the T'ang Dynasty who solved crimes and sent evildoers to their doom. Judge Dee had almost disappeared into obscurity until he was re-discovered by one of the most extraordinary men Holland has ever produced. Robert van Gulik, scholar, linguist, calligrapher, musician, and prolific lover was, in his day job, a full-time diplomat who eventually became Dutch ambassador to Japan. Full of intellectual curiosity and energy, he mastered most of the Asian languages as well as the customs. His happiest childhood years were those he spent in the Dutch East Indies where at the age of twelve he wrote a book on Javanese puppets. Chinese when he lived in China, Japanese during his time in Tokyo, Robert van Gulik was a Westerner with an Eastern heart. Oriental Passion
A great reader and avid frequenter of antiquarian bookshops, Van Gulik had a vast collection of Chinese manuscripts and antiques. However, despite his taste for highbrow Oriental culture, he also had a passion for Chinese popular novels and that's how he came across Judge Dee. Probably based on a real character from Ancient China, Dee was a canny

Robert Hans van Gulik was born in Holland in 1910 and died in The Hague at the age of 57. Van Gulik was raised in Java where he became obsessed with all things Chinese. He translated ancient texts and explored esoteric Buddhism. In 1935 he was given his first diplomatic assignment to the Dutch embassy in Tokyo. During his service in Japan he began the celebrated Judge Dee series, first translating an authentic Chinese 16th century detective novel, Dee Goong An , then continuing with original works using Judge Dee and his assistants as his principal characters. the series has attained international fame.
Janwillem van de Wetering, whose life and career has parallels with that of Dr. Van Gulik, in this volume examines both van Gulik's life and work and the development of his metaphysical and scholarly philosophies. Drawing on research, interviews and correspondence with those who knew van Gulik, van de Wetering has fashioned a lively appreciation of one of the most unusual mystery writers of the 20th century.
Janwillem van de Wetering , former Zen Buddhist monk, Amsterdam detective, and world traveler, lives in Surry, Maine. His most recent mystery is

Robert Hans van Gulik Robert Hans van Gulik wurde am 9. August 1910 in Zutphen geboren.
