"Yes, I said ´mob´. That´s all people are these days. A mob, a beast we´ve helped build up with our propaganda. They´re afraid, mortally afraid for their babies, and we haven´t got a scientist who can think objectively on the matter. In fact, we haven´t got a scientist worthy of the name. What incentive is there for a human being to spend a lifetime in research when in his mind is the deadening knowledge that all the discoveries he can hope to make have long since ben perfected by the Slans? That they´re waiting out thee somewhere in secret caves or written out on paper, ready for the day when the slans make their next attempt to take over the world?"
About the Book
"Fans are Slans," became the catchphrase of early science fiction fandom in the wake of this novel. Like the Slans - telepathic mutants hiding out in a hostile population - science fiction fans considered themselves a haunted special minority, imbued with transcendent and visionary insight, sure to prevail in the fullness of time. Communes were called "Slan shacks" and fans occupied them. In the wake of the atomic bomb and theories of atomic mutation, the premise of SLAN seemed ever more credible.

Belated Reviews #1: A.E. Van Vogt
AE Van Vogt's most popular works appeared in the forties and fifties (after which he was sidetracked). They varied widely and imaginatively in terms of setting, but most typically followed a protagonist of superhuman abilities, or extra-ordinary competence, as he came into his powers. The focus was on the plot and on the plot devices, rather than on the growth of the protagonist: Van Vogt wrote stories that were weak in characterization and character development, for an audience didn't much value them. His best books include Slan (***). An early superior-mutants-in-hiding novel. Slans are the next evolutionary step super-intelligent, telepathic, and possessing betraying (but concealable) antennae. Ordinary humans tend to kill them when they find them as Jommy Cross's parents are killed when he is a child Cross himself escapes, and spends his next years hiding, growing in power (and developing superscientific gizmos), cautiously seeking other Slans. The Weapon Shops of Isher (***). The Earth of the future is one that could be a high-tech dystopia, with an unsentimental Imperial government and largely-unfettered corporations. The weapons shops provide a mitigating, somewhat anarchic counterbalance: They sell weapons which represent better technology than the government can muster, can only be used defensively, and make it very difficult to coerce their users. The story involving a conflict between the Imperium and the weapon shops, some involuntary time travel, and an extremely *lucky* young man who goes to the big city serves primarily as a vehicle for a tour of this future world. A sequel, "The Weapon Makers" (**), focuses upon the secret immortal who works behind the scenes to maintain the balance between the Imperium and the weapon shops, and who only makes a brief appearance in the first book.

A.E. van Vogt (born 1912)
Canadian/US writer. Van Vogt's work is essentially SF adventure whose protagonists frequently have some superhuman mental powers, derived through mutation or special training. It is this characteristic of wish-fulfillment that has made his stories so popular among adolescent readers. The supreme example of this is van Vogt's first novel, Slan , which follows the growing up a mutant with telepathic powers and enhanced intelligence (a slan), who grows to realise the vital role he will play in society. Nevertheless the stories are laced with ideas atypical and more thoroughly detailed than those used by more simplistic Golden Age writers such as E.E. Smith The Voyage of the Space Beagle has many elements of traditional Space Opera, but is interesting for its examination of shipboard politics, and a pseudo-science similar to the quasi-philosophical movement of General Semantics that van Vogt uses in his most important work, The World of Null-A , and its sequel, The Pawns of Null-A Gilbert Gosseyn (`go sane'), the protagonist of

Alfred Elton van Vogt, legendary science fiction writer, died of complications following pneumonia in Los Angeles Wednesday morning. He was 87 years old. "Van Vogt was the ideal practitioner of 'Doc' Smith's billion-year spree. He was not hard and cold and unemotional, in the manner of Clement, Asimov and Heinlein. He could balance his cubic light-years and the paraphernalia of super science with moments of tenderness and pure loony joy."

NASA Honors Fallen Astronauts

Legendary SF Fan Walter Willis Dies
Grand Dame of Darkover Dies in Berkeley It is very, very sad to hear that my dear old friend A.E. has passed on. He was a true giant in his field, one of those on whose shoulders others later stood. As a student back in Germany in the '50s, I was the German translator of most of his great books from the Golden Years of SF. I loved him for his sparkling, unmatched imagination and his unique writing style (self-taught from correspondence courses, he once told me), and our later meetings in the U.S. were great moments for me. One time, he had come to Huntsville, Alabama, to give a speech at the University of Alabama campus there, and I invited him on a tour of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (where I was working as an engineer under Wernher von Braun).

    4. Februar 2000 - Autor: Jesco von Puttkamer Jesco von Puttkamer: Erinnerungen an A.E. van Vogt (1912-2000) I always had to put my special brand of adjectives in her texts ", sagte er mir einmal). This photo was taken back in 1978 on the set of "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" (Robert Wise, dir.) at Paramount (in fact behind the "Enterprise" Bridge construction), when I spent a little vacation leave from NASA with Gene Roddenberry to assist him as Technical Advisor on the picture. One day, we invited my old friend A.E. to the set, and the event turned into a meeting of the mutual admirer's club. Gene had read a lot of A.E.'s writings when flying as a TWA airline pilot on long intercontinental hauls, and particularly A.E.'s "Voyage of the Space Beagle" helped Gene to conceive of Star Trek. I asked Van Vogt during that visit to Paramount whether he wouldn't like to see his own books turned into movies, and I remember him replying that he felt that his style was just not suitable for the screen: the imaginative power of his writings spoke to the cerebral sense much more than to the visual (as opposed to what Gene did with Star Trek - pure video). What went on in Gilbert Gosseyn's mind or in the strange mind of Coeurl ("On and on Coeurl prowled.", one of the most famous openings of an SF novel of all time...with five words, he hooked you right then and there ) couldn't be brought to the screen, but it was why one read his stuff in the first place. A.E.'s was truly "literary" SF which absorbed (and then twisted) the mind. Of course, however, there also was the acknowledged fact that Ixtl from "Voyage of the Space Beagle" (originally "Discord in Scarlet") was the model for the alien in "Alien".

    Author Profile - A. E. Van Vogt
    Style
    A. E. Van Vogt is probably the most frustrating science fiction author in the entire world to me. The is because the first two books of his I ever read were great . I spent a great deal of time chasing down and reading a lot of his other works, only to find that those two were practically the only good ones he ever wrote! He doesn't really have a style. He's got one book with variations: super-powered central character is beset by adversaries, which he eventually overcomes. The character's super-powers are the result of a particular kind of philosophy, intellegence, psychic power, or the like. Mostly, he prevails by wit. Now if well-written, this can be a good story line. But when it's the only one you have, it is disappointing. Nonetheless, the books of his that are well-done are great , In My Humble Opinion.
    Stories to Read First
In fact, the only ones worth reading. The Weapon Shops of Isher , and its sequel, The Weapon Makers . The latter was in fact the first book of his I read. To this day, I think it is one of the finest science fiction stories ever written. His central character, Robert Hedrock, is supposed to have an IQ of order 200 or more. And by George, I believed it. He convinced me. Not an easy feat. He has one other great book, Voyage of the Space Beagle . This novel is essentially three novellas tied together. The first one involves this panther-like alien on a post-nuclear war planet. It is historic because it was the cover story for the historic Astounding Magazine that featured this story, the first story by Isaac Asimov, and another first I forget just now. And it is a rattling good yarn. So are the other two novellas. The protagonist is an advocate of "Nexialism", or the science of everything, and how it fits together. This, as with much of his work, has echoes of Scientology. This is because Van Vogt was an early devotee of Dianetics (later Scientology) and in fact started his own offshoot of it.
