The Weapon Makers by A.E. van Vogt I think it is his best, and one of the few worth reading. If you've read one, you've read most of them. So you should read the best ones, and this is probably the best of the best. It is really a sequel to The Weapon Shops of Isher . But I read this one first, and it stands alone quite well. The protagonist, the Van Vogtian superman, is Robert Hedrock. He was made immortal through an accident. But being extremely altruistic, he has spent over five thousand years trying to duplicate the accident, and thus make immortality available to all mankind. Being of a libertarian nature, Hedrock founded the Weapon Shops. In these shops, common citizens can acquire powerful weapons that can only be used in self-defense, to prevent them from being oppressed. Furthermore, we find out in this novel, that he also is responsible for the ruling Imperial dynasty. Thus, he is involved in both ends of the government. The crux of the story is Hedrock's interaction with Innelda, the young, beautiful, intelligent, strong-willed empress. A strong love-hate relationship here. He finds out that the Empire is close to discovering an interstellar space drive. Innelda sees this as a threat to Imperial power. Hedrock sees it as a way for mankind to progress and grow. Conflict is inevitable. Almost as an aside, aliens appear on the scene to evaluate humankind. The challenge here is to make Hedrock seem as intelligent as he is supposed to be. An IQ of around 278 is mentioned, so high as to almost be meaningless (in another story, I believe van Vogt mentions an IQ of around 800. Completely meaningless.). But van Vogt brings it off very well. From his actions and wit, you can almost believe that the guy is super-intelligent. He keeps one step ahead of both the Weapon Shops and the Empire in terms of technology, because he is so smart, and to protect his identity. Along the way, we are treated to great ideas in terms of dimensional travel, limited time travel, and "magnifiers" to make things giant-sized, although at a huge cost in aging (which is less of a problem if you are an immortal).

is to super-humans what Issac Asimov was to robots. Each created an impressive niche that other authors take note when creating similar stories. Neither would claim to have been the first to tackle either subject but they caught the SF reader's imagination by being at the right place at the right time with the right ideas. It is to Van Vogt's credit that he gave his super-humans not only worlds but galactic empires to roam or flee from persecution. His realities were also liberally incorporated with various super-sciences enabling his heroes to take command of the most difficult situations eventually. His aliens were creatures to respect and be wary. You always feel his characters had a life outside of the current story they're in. Unlike some of his other prodigious contemporaries, Van Vogt was not a slave to a single reality, invariably creating a new one for each story. Only two of his realities went beyond one book, Linn and the earlier Null-A novels.

A. E. van Vogt
(Redirected from A.E. van Vogt Alfred Elton van Vogt ) was a Canadian-born science fiction author . After starting his writing career by writing for "true confessions" style pulp magazines , he decided to switch to writing something that he enjoyed: science fiction. His first published science fiction story, Black Destroyer Astounding Science Fiction , 1939), depicting a fierce, carnivorous alien stalking the crew of an exploration ship was extremely popular and set the style for a number of science fiction films over the years. He wrote a large number of short stories, many of which were retrospectively patched together into novels, or "fixups" as he called them. Sometimes this was successful ( The War against the Rull ); other times the disparate stories thrown together made for an incoherent plot (

My A.E. van Vogt Tribute and Links
Okay, there are various specialties within the larger genre called science fiction. A.E. van Vogt falls into the Pioneer category. I've collected every book of his that I could find. He freely admitted to using a formula in structuring his stories, which has caused many sci-fi snobs to dismiss him as a lightweight. But the formula doesn't work without great ideas, and his are excellent. He often bases his novels on concepts that interest him personally, such as General Semantics (the Null-A trilogy) and individual responsibility for others and the state of the world (Cosmic Encounter). He started out during the "pulp" era of science fiction. That refers to the cheap paper used for magazines that were printed at a time when science fiction was considered to even more weird and freaky than it is now. He eventually expanded or combined many of his magazine stories into novels.
Recommended A.E. van Vogt Books
I like all of van Vogt's books, but my short list includes these seven novels:
  • Slan
  • The Weapon Shops novels:
    • The Weapon Shops of Isher
    • The Weapon Makers
  • The Null-A (Semantics) Trilogy:
    • The World of Null-A
    • The Players of Null-A
    • Null-A Three
  • Cosmic Encounter
- The Weapon Shops novels have been republished in one volume called The Empire of Isher,

Drake’s on and off again three-decades long project that included research, interviewing, writing and convention presentations about the late “golden age of sf” author, A. E. van Vogt. This book emphasizes an interest that van Vogt and Drake shared in the subject of general semantics. And, additional perspectives are presented which shed light on how and why van Vogt wrote some of his fiction and nonfiction. “Fix-up” novels were what van Vogt called short stories that he tied together into long works of fiction. A. E. van Vogt may be thought of as the fix-up novels King of the Sevagram plane! This book offers a new critique of one of science fantasy’s grand masters!

SF Canada ARTICLES Spring 2000
A. E. Van Vogt (1912-2000)
The following information about the late Canadian-born SF writer A. E. Van Vogt was culled from several sources by SF Canada past-president Jean-Louis Trudel. Alfred Elton van Vogt was born in Winnipeg in 1912 and he grew up in Neville and Swift Current, Saskatchewan, as well as in Morden and Winnipeg, Manitoba. His first exposure to SF, at age eleven, was in the Chum Annual that a friend lent him. At fourteen, he purchased the November 1926 issue of Amazing Stories and was hooked. He began his writing career with sales to True Story and Scarlet Confession , but also penned some fifty radio plays for various Canadian stations. His first SF publication, "Black Destroyer," appeared as the cover story in the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction . Two months earlier, he had married Edna Mayne Hull, after meeting her at a writers' group in Winnipeg. He worked as a clerk in the Department of National Defence from 1939 to 1941, perhaps in one of Ottawa's "temporary" wartime buildings, but it was in a cottage north of Ottawa that he wrote

Empire of Isher
by A. E. van Vogt
A book review by Mark L. Olson
Orb, 2000 A. E. van Vogt's recent death reminded me that I ought to re-read some of his novels, so I picked two which I remembered with the most pleasure, and which Orb has just reissued, and I wasn't disappointed. The two Weapon Shops novels are both quite short by today's bloated standards. The first one, The Weapon Shops of Isher, is a fix-up novel combining a novella and a novelette and some additional material - one of van Vogt's favorite techniques. Both are set in a distant future about 7000 years from now in the late 1950s. If they still used AD, their calendars would read something like 7000 AD, but it is really the 1950s with a bit of glitter added. The world - indeed, the entire Solar System - has long been unified in the Isher Empire, a genuine none-of-this-limited-monarchy-crap Empire. Isher rules peacefully and fairly lightly because the all-powerful Imperial Government is counterbalanced by the Weapon Shops whose superior science makes them invulnerable to Imperial weapons and who sell defensive guns to anyone who wants them. (The guns literally can't be used except for hunting or self-defense.) The Weapon Shops also run a parallel judicial system which dispenses civil justice to anyone cheated by the Imperial government. This political situation has existed, stable and generally pretty free, for thousands of years. The stories tell of a threat to this order coming from an Imperial government determined to do away with the Weapon Shops and a new threat due to a bit of overweening ambition on the part of the shops, as well.

Early Scientology Supporter A.E. van Vogt Dies at 87
News Services, February 2, 2000
LOS ANGELES-A.E. van Vogt, 87, the science fiction writer whose telepathic mutants, superhuman races and dangerous creatures from outer space blazed a trail for the "Alien" films, died Jan. 26 in a nursing home in here. He had Alzheimer's disease.
