Walpole, Horace
24 September 1717 - 2 March 1797
The Castle of Otranto , published on Christmas Eve in 1764 (the year in which James Watt perfected the steam engine, thus laying the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution), more-or-less began the Gothic as we know it. Initally accepted rather favorably, Otranto was villified by the press once it was revealed, in the second edition, that the work was not in fact a translation of an old manuscript but the contemporary creation of the politically and socially well-connected son of a Prime Minister. Walpole's drama The Mysterious Mother , never performed in his lifetime, dealt with another topic that would attract much (scandalized) attention in the Romantic period: incest.

like a ghost, thro' narrow passages Walking, feeling the cold walls with her hands. William Blake, Fair Eleanor The drowsy eye, half-closing to the lid, Stares on OTRANTO's walls; grim terrors rise The horrid helmet strikes my soul unbid Ann Yearsley Horace Walpole (1717-1797), fourth Earl of Orford, son of Sir Robert Walpole, introduced and named the genre with The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story Educated at Eton and King's College Cambridge. Between 1739 and 1741 Horace Walpole toured France and Italy with his friend the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). On his return to England, Walpole become a Member of Parliament Shortly after taking up his seat, Walpole leased (1747) then bought (1749) Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, London. Following his purchase, Strawberry Hill was remodelled in Gothic style, something resembling the set for a Hammer Horror movie. It was the Gothic atmosphere of Strawberry Hill that led to the writing of The Castle of Otranto . One night, early June 1764, Walpole fell asleep in the gloom of Strawberry Hill and had a nightmare. The nightmare became The Castle of Otranto Horace Walpole: I waked one morning at the beginning of last June from a dream, of which all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle (a very natural dream for a head filled like mine with Gothic story) and that on the uppermost bannister of a great staircase I saw a gigantic hand in armour. In the evening I sat down and began to write, without knowing in the least what I intended to say or relate. The work grew on my hands, and I grew fond of it - add that I was very glad to think of anything rather than politics - in short I was so engrossed in my tale, which I completed in less than two months, that one evening I wrote from the time I had drunk my tea, about six o'clock, till half an hour after one in the morning, when my hand and fingers were so weary, that I could not hold the pen to finish the sentence, but left Matilda and Isabella talking, in the middle of a paragraph.

Horace Walpole
Horry's godfather and namesake, Horace Walpole is said to be "rising sixty" years old when the novel opens in 1776. Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-97) was an English author. He was the son of Sir Robert Walpole. An admirer of the medieval, he built a pseudo-Gothic showplace castle at Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham. The Picture to the left shows Strawberry Hill around 1774 and the picture the right is from around a year later in 1775. Walpole called Strawberry Hill, which he bought in 1749, "A little plaything of a house and the prettiest baubel you ever saw. It is set in enamelled meadows with filigree hedges." Unfortunately the building was ruined in the mid-nineteenth century by one of Walpole's heirs, the dissolute eighth Earl of Waldegrave. The Earl sold off all the contents of the house first in a sale. In 1757 started a press there, publishing Thomas Gray's Pindaric odes and his own works. His reputation rests on more than 3,000 letters (1732-97) that give an invaluable picture of Georgian England. His gothic romance, The Castle of Otranto was published in 1765 and anticipated romanticism. General Walpole biography Walpole links

Horace Walpole
Walpole, Horace (1717-1797), was a noted English letter writer, author, and art lover. Even at a time when personal letters were considered a minor art form, Walpole's huge correspondence is remarkable. His witty letters provide an entertaining documentary of life in English high society. They report social and political gossip, and express Walpole's opinions on literature and the arts. As a scholar fascinated by medieval life, Walpole greatly influenced the Gothic revival of the late 1700's. He transformed Strawberry Hill, his house in Twickenham, into a miniature Gothic castle. He built a printing press nearby, and published many of his own writings. His most influential literary work is The Castle of Otranto (1764). This tale of terror and the supernatural was the first of what became known as Gothic novels. Walpole was born in London. He was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, the first prime minister of Great Britain. He served in Parliament from 1741 to 1768. In 1791, he succeeded to the family title as the fourth Earl of Orford. Source: World Book Encyclopedia 1997

Hieroglyphic Tales, seven fanciful tales by Horace Walpole, have a fanciful history of their own: privately printed in an edition of seven, they were distributed to a few friends only after their author's death. Walpole himself offers this description in his preface: "The Hieroglyphic Tales were undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered." Newly discovered, these tales are now available, alongside equally fanciful illustrations by Jill McElmurry, in a charming gift edition, proving true Walpole's prediction that the Hieroglyphic Tales "will be treated with due reverence some hundred years hence."
