Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he toured the Continent with his friend Thomas Gray from 1739 to 1741, when the two quarreled and parted. He was elected to Parliament in 1741 and served until 1767, confining himself largely to the role of spectator and defender of his father's memory. In 1747 he acquired a country house, Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, where he built a pseudo-Gothic castle, which became the showplace of England. He was reconciled with Gray in 1745 and later published his friend's Pindaric odes, as well as many first editions of his own works from the private printing press he started at Strawberry Hill in 1757. Walpole's literary reputation rests primarily on his letters, which have great charm and polish and are invaluable pictures of Georgian England. More than 3,000 of his correspondences are extant and cover a period extending from 1732 to 1797. Among his more famous correspondents are Gray, Sir Horace Mann, Thomas Chatterton, and Mme Du Deffand . Walpole succeeded to the earldom of Orford in 1791. Besides his enthusiasm for medieval architecture and trappings, he anticipated the romanticism of the 19th cent. with his Gothic romance

Besides his enthusiasm for medieval architecture and trappings, he anticipated the romanticism of the 19th cent. with his Gothic romance The Castle of Otranto (1765). His other important works include Historic Doubts on Richard III (1768), an attempt to rehabilitate the character of Richard; Anecdotes of Painting in England (4 vol., 1762-71); and posthumous works, Reminiscences (1798) and memoirs of the reigns of George II (1822) and George III (1845, 1859). Horace Walpole Study Resources Printed books Manuscripts Prints and drawings Paintings and furniture ... Other materials The Lewis Walpole Library, bequeathed to Yale University in 1979 with a substantial endowment to support its continuing work, consists of and develops the private collection of material associated with Walpole and his circle assembled by Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis (1895-1979), editor of the Yale edition of Horace Walpole's correspondence. The collection is the prime resource for the study of Horace Walpole, and rich in materials relating to all aspects of the British 18th century. Printed books At the core of the collection, two-thirds of the traceable volumes (about one half of the original total of about 7,000 titles) from Walpole's antiquarian library at Strawberry Hill , many with his own annotations, are arranged in Walpole's original shelf order. These are the volumes to which Walpole makes such frequent reference in his letters, books essential to the full understanding of Walpole's thought. The essential guide to Walpole's library is Allen T. Hazen's A catalogue of Horace Walpole's library (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1969, 3 vols.), which also contains Lewis's 1957 Sandars Lectures on Walpole's library. Hazen marks items at Farmington with the initials "WSL;" more have been added to the collection since his time, some of which Hazen had never seen and could only identify tentatively. The collection includes four important sets of publications bound up by Walpole: 36 volumes of the

Walpole, Horace: Memoires of the Last Ten Years, of the Reign Of George The Second. London: John Murray., 1822. First edition. 2 vols., 4to, pp. li, 536; xi, 536, with 11 engraved plates through both volumes as called for. Some spotting, foxing, and the odd waterstain towards beginning and end, some offsetting to plates, bound in a contemporary half calf and marbled boards publisher’s binding, corners and sides rubbed, joints split, upper board of vol.1 almost detached, tear to leather on spine of vol 2. Twentieth century armorial bookplate of John Lancaster. First edition of Walpole’s Memoirs, which were kept in a sealed chest until the author’s death in 1797; they were subsequently edited by Lord Holland. Walpole’s inside report on politics in the years 1751-1760 has central characters (the Duke of Cumberland and the Prince of Wales, Argyle, Pelham, Hardwicke, Fox, Bedford, Murray, Newcastle, and Pitt) depicted in vignettes according to a programme written by Walpole, which could be rude (the Lord Chancellor, Lord Hardwicke, is in a picture with a statue of Justice, and, behind her “a money chest, (Justice’s) scales crammed into it”). The drawings were by Richard Bentley, the son of the classicist, Dr. Bentley of Cambridge, a friend of Walpole. For the frontispiece he depicts Walpole in the foreground of his ‘little Gothic castle’ at Strawberry Hill.
