Horace Walpole
L’on comprend l’apostrophe à Voltaire.

Horace Walpole
Born 24th. September, 1717, in London; died 2nd. March, 1797.
British writer and MP. His original name was Horatio Walpole. He became the 4th. Earl of Orford. He was brought up for the first ten years of his life in Chelsea, London. He was the youngest son of Catherine Shorter and Sir Robert Walpole (1st Earl of Orford), the English Whig politician and the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. Horace Walpole went to Eton and met the future poet Thomas Gray. He went to King's College, Cambridge to study classics but left without completing a degree. His mother died in 1737 and six months later his father married his long-term mistress Maria Skerrett. His father gave him the posts of Controller of the Pipe and Usher of the Exchequer which brought in £1200 a year. From 1739 to 1741 he travelled on the Grand Tour with Thomas Gray. He met Florence H. Mann who became one of his most important correspondents. Horace Walpole and Thomas Gray quarrelled at Reggio Emilia on the way to Venice, and they parted company. Horace Walpole then suffered a serious illness and was cared for by Lord Lincoln and Joseph Spence who were passing that way. When Horace Walpole had recovered the three travelled together for a while. In 1741 Horace Walpole returned to Britain and became MP for Callington, Cornwall.

note: for those of you who are having a fit of "political correctness" having read this, i would like to inform you that baron evola was not a fascist or a nazi. he supported many groups, but followed none but himself. as a matter of fact, heinrich himmler and benito mussolini both saw him as a threat. he was banned from speaking in germany and spied on by the fascist party. i suggest reading "revolt against the modern world" for a more in-depth examination of his beliefs. believe me, you will be surprised.

70. Horace Walpole: Portrait Von Harry Timmermann

http://www.freilach.com/Literatur/walpole.htm
Harry Timmermann
