SocratesÕ Apology
by Xenophon
It seems to me fitting to hand down to memory, furthermore, how Socrates, on being indicted, deliberated on his defence and on his end. It is true that others have written about this, and that all of them have reproduced the loftiness of his words, a fact which proves that his utterance really was of the character intimated; but they have not shown clearly that he had now come to the conclusion that for him death was more to be desired than life; and hence his lofty utterance appears rather ill-considered. Hermogenes, the son of Hipponicus, however, was a companion of his and has given us reports of such a nature as to show that the sublimity of his speech was appropriate to the resolve he had made. For he stated that on seeing Socrates discussing any and every subject rather than the trial, he had said: "Socrates, ought you not to be giving some thought to what defence you are going to make? " That Socrates had at first replied, "Why, do I not seem to you to have spent my whole life in preparing to defend myself? " Then when he asked, "How so? " he had said, "Because all my life I have been guiltless of wrong-doing; and that I consider the finest preparation for a defence. " Then when Hermogenes again asked, "Do you not observe that the Athenian courts have often been carried away by an eloquent speech and have condemned innocent men to death, and often on the other hand the guilty have been acquitted either because their plea aroused compassion or because their speech was witty? " "Yes, indeed! " he had answered; "and I have tried twice already to meditate on my defence, but my divine sign interposes. "

Review of J. Dillery: Xenophon and the History of his Times
Professor Dillery aims to investigate X.'s understanding of the history of his times as displayed in Hellenica and Anabasis and to compare it with the historical outlook of his contemporaries (especially other historians). The two agendas do not, however, command equal space - not unreasonably. An author like Ephorus - despite numerous fragments and the (admittedly booby-trapped) guidance provided by Diodorus - is elusive enough in all conscience, but experience suggests that Xenophon, whose oeuvre (historical and non-historical) is by contrast intact, is, for many people, still more so. The latter problem must be thoroughly addressed before substantial time is spent on comparisons. (When it is, incidentally, it would appear that Herodotus might deserve as much thought as Ephorus or Theopompus.) A fundamental impediment for many is, of course, the conviction that X. is a bad historian. But (cf. 196) such a judgment does not relieve us of the duty of trying to figure out what he said and why he said it. This is the duty Dillery seeks to discharge. Xenophon's principal historical work ( Hellenica ) consists, Dillery argues, of two parts - 2.3.10-7.5.27 composed in the 350s and 1.1.1-2.3.10 composed "I do not know exactly when" (14) but as a completion of Thucydides' truncated

Xenophon (~444 - ~357) Life . An Athenian, the son of Gryllus, Xenophon was born about 444 BCE. In his early life he was a pupil of Socrates ; but the turning point in his career came when he decided to serve in the Greek contingent raised by Cyrus against Artaxerxes in 401. Xenophon himself mentions the circumstances under which he joined this army ( Anab . 3:1). Proxenus, a friend of Xenophon, was already with Cyrus, and he invited Xenophon to come to Sardis Anab . 7:8, 23). He tells the story himself, and is evidently not ashamed of it. In other ways also he showed himself the prototype of an adventurous leader of condottieri , with no ties of country or preference of nationality. He formed a scheme for establishing a town with the Ten Thousand on the shores of the Euxine; but it fell through. He joined the Spartans, as has been seen, and he continued in their service even when they were at war with Athens. Agesilaus, the Spartan, was commanding the Lacedaemonian forces in Asia against the Persians in 396, and Xenophon was with him at least during part of the campaign. When Agesilaus was recalled (394), Xenophon accompanied him, and he was on the side of the Lacedaemonians in the battle which they fought at Coronea (394) against the Athenians. As a natural consequence a decree of exile was passed against him at Athens. It seems that he went to Sparta with Agesilaus after the battle of Coronea, and soon after he settled at Scillus in Elis, not far from Olympia, a spot of which he has given a description in the

Xenophon's Defense of Socrates, from the Memorabilia 1. I have often wondered by what arguments the accusers[1] of Socrates persuaded the Athenians that he deserved death from the state; for the indictment against him was to this effect: Socrates offends against the laws in not paying respect[2] to those gods whom the city respects, and introducing other new deities; he also offends against the laws in corrupting the youth. 2. In the first place, that he did not respect the gods whom the city respects, what proof did they bring? For he was seen frequently sacrificing at home, and frequently on the public altars of the city; nor was it unknown that he used divination; as it was a common subject of talk that "Socrates used to say that the divinity instructed him;" and it was from this circumstance, indeed, that they seem chiefly to have derived the charge of introducing new deities. 3. He however introduced nothing newer than those who, practising divination, consult auguries, voices,[3] omens, and sacrifices; for they do not imagine that birds, or people who meet them, know what is advantageous for those seeking presages, but that the gods, by their means, signify what will be so; and such was the opinion that Socrates entertained. 4. Most people say that they are diverted from an object, or prompted to it, by birds, or by the people who meet them; but Socrates spoke as he thought, for he said it was the divinity that was his monitor. He also told many of his friends to do certain things, and not to do others, intimating that the divinity had forewarned him; and advantage attended those who obeyed his suggestions, but repentance those who disregarded them.

Xenophon

Studies:
  • B.S., Chemical Engineering, Bucknell University, 1975.
    M.S., Lehigh University, 1977Ph.D., Lehigh University, 1979.
Current Focus of Research:
The research interests of Prof. Verykios are in the area of heterogeneous catalysis, with particular emphasis on supported metal and metal oxide catalysts. With respect to fundamental research, particular efforts are directed towards understanding the mechanism by which electronic and geometric parameters of small metal crystallites influence chemisorptive and kinetic phenomena. Alterations in the electronic structure of supported metal particles are induced by altervalent cation doping of semiconductive carriers. Alterations in the geometric structure are induced by alloying of active metals with inactive ones.
The interaction of gaseous molecules with catalytic surfaces is investigated employing various techniques such as equilibrium and dynamic adsorption, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, microgravimetry, steady-state isotopic transient and temperature-programmed techniques (TPD, TPO, TPR, TPSR), microcalorimetry, EXAFS/XANES, XPS, and others.
In the area of applied heterogeneous catalysis efforts are aimed towards the development of new catalysts for processes of industrial or environmental importance, or the optimization of existing ones. Of particular interest are processes related to the utilization of natural gas, such as oxidative coupling, CO2 reforming and partial oxidation. Unique catalysts, exhibiting high activity and selectivity and excellent stability have been developed and patented for the latter two processes. Catalysis related to environmental phenomena is also of particular importance. Processes which are investigated include three-way automotive exhaust purification for cars with gasoline engines, reduction of NOx from stationary sources as well as from lean-burn and diesel engines, and catalytic destruction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

K yrie, I t is Zeus' anathema on our epoch for the dynamism of our economies and the herecy of our economic methods and policies that we should agonize between the Scylla of nomismatic plethora and the Charybdis of economic anaemia. It is not my idiosyncracy to be ironic or sarcastic but my diagnosis should be that politicians are rather cryptoplethorists. A lthough the emphatically stigmatize nomismatic plethora, they energize it through their tactics and practices. Our policies have to be based more on economic and less on political criteria. Our gnomon has to be a metron between political, strategic and philanthropic scopes. Political magic has always been antieconomic. I n our epoch characterised by monopolies, oligopolies, monopolistic antagonism and polymorphous inelasticities, our policies have to be more orthological. But this should not be metamorphosed into plethorophobia which is endemic among academic economists. N omismatic symmetry should not antagonize economic acme. A greater harmonization between the practices of the economic and numismatic archons is basic. Parallel to this, we have to synchronize and harmonize more and more our economic and numismatic policies panethnically.
