The fundamental distinction between acupressure and acupuncture lies in the gentle but firm pressure of hands used in acupressure and the needles used in acupuncture. Using the power and sensitivity of the human hand, acupressure is especially effective in the relief of tension-related ailments, in self-treatment, and in preventive health care For additional information on Crystal Points Acupressure and the Health Benefits of these treatments, please follow the links below.

Introduction
Acupressure and acupuncture have been used in the Far East for thousands of years to treat disease, but this poorly understood science has only gained wider acceptance in the West in recent times. Chinese medicine emphasizes personal responsibility for one's health, unlike much of Western medicine. This page is designed to put the relief of common and usually minor discomforts and symptoms into your own hands. Acupressure does not replace standard emergency procedures nor licensed medical treatment (including that of a licensed acupuncturist). Any persistent problem, serious injury or symptom requires the attention of a licensed doctor. But these pressure points will relieve those symptoms and pains for which you would normally buy non-prescription drugs. They can also be used to supplement standard first-aid treatment.
Warning
Acupressure should not be used:
  • As your only treatment for illness; if you are sick, see a doctor.

http://www.jilaensherwood.com/acupressure.html
Acupressure Acupressure and massage are two of the most ancient forms of healing. Many of their benefits can easily be measured and felt. The techniques work by increasing the rate circulation of blood. This allows the muscles to relax and absorb more oxygen, which increases the delivery of nutrients, and washes away waste chemicals that build up in tense muscles. There is nothing more therapeutic for the mind and body than that of a good massage. Headaches, backaches, stress reduction, neck pain and shoulder pain can all be melted away in no time by skilled hands. Acupressure is an ancient approach to restoring and maintaining health. It is based on the Oriental philosophy that qi (also 'ki' or 'chi') energy, the life force that flows within us, is the key to our physical, emotional and spiritual health. If the flow of energy becomes blocked, there is disharmony and disease. When qi flows unobstructed through the energy meridians in our body, our energy is harmonized and the blockages that cause disease in the body/mind/spirit are removed. Acupressure Massage
When acupressure is combined with massage, it relaxes the body while energizing it. A therapist uses finger pressure, not needles, to massage muscles and increase vitality and promote health. Acupressure massage is used as preventive health care. The stimulation of reflex points can alert the individual to the presence of sore spots. Acupressure is also a powerful tool to alleviate fatigue, relaxing muscular tension and increasing general well being. Acupressure massage is safe and effective for people with a variety of lifestyles. The acupressure massage is done on a massage table, massage pad or chair. You will be covered at all times.

ACUPRESSURE:
Acupressure is performed without needles. The body worker uses his or her thumbs, hands, elbows, even a knee where appropriate. He will work along a meridian (the energy pipe way) or on a combination of points from various meridians to achieve a specific goal. There are twelve traditional meridians throughout the body. Shiatsu is acupressure that is combined with stretching joints and other techniques. Acupressure naturally reduces pain by stimulating the release of endorphins (the body's own built-in pain releivers). Acupressure also increases the nutrient supply to muscles by promoting cellular exchange, while preventing the buildup of harmful fatigue products, metabolic wastes and lactic acid resulting from strenuous excerice. Further, Acupressure improves overall muscle tone and relieves painful muscle spasms again often associated with long and strenuous training workouts. Shiatsu is useful in soft tissue injuries, including muscle strain, sprains, spasms and aches located in the back shoulders, neck and hind quarters. Using Shiatsu speeds up recovery after an injury by increasing blood flow to the affected areas, while lessening inflammation and swelling to the joints. In addition to improving muscle tone, Shiatsu increases the range of motion and generally improves a horse's disposition as it relieves discomfort. We can learn alot about our animals, just by touching them.

Alternative Therapies Acupressure
Acupressure is the ancient Chinese healing art of using applied pressure on specific points on the body to relieve common ailments and discomfort. Acupressure is based on the same concept of meridians and acupoints as acupuncture, but fingertip pressure is used rather than needles. The aim is also the same, to balance the flow of energy or qi within the meridians, creating healthy functioning of the internal organs and preventing or curing disease. During treatment, the practitioner determines the correct points to use in relation to the ailment(s) and then places gentle pressure on the area(s) using the tips of the index or middle fingers, or the thumb, or the edge of the fingernail. The pressure must be even and is most often applied in the direction of the flow of the meridian. Small rotations may accompany the pressure and depending on the condition, the effects may be felt immediately (as in the case of blocked sinuses). Some conditions which acupressure can treat are:
  • Asthma Back Ache Constipation Fatigue Headaches

ACUPRESSURE
Acupressure is very often described as "acupuncture without the needles" Acupressure also predates acupuncture. It is part of traditional Chinese medicine and is based on the theory of "QI". Qi is often referred to as "life energy" and it is what flows channels in the body known as meridians. Finger and thumb pressure is applied to certain acupoints. This helps in relieving certain ailments and promoting health and harmony. Weight Loss Secrets It is widely practised in China but still finding its way in the western world. A number of acupuncturists also use acupressure. In China the most common form of acupressure is called "tuina". In Japan the most common form is "anma". Acupressure is a system of massage that promotes the life energy to circulate. The same principles of stimulating points on the meridians are the same whether needles or fingers are used. Another system of acupressure is called "shen tao" which is possibly the oldest form. The Japanese version of acupressure "anma" has developed into what is now called shiatsu. When you consult a acupressure practitioner they will ask you about your medical history and then assess you according to the "four examinations". You lie on a table fully clothed. No oils are used.

Acupressure Relieves Nausea in Chemotherapy Patients
Last year, an estimated 175,000 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer. For most breast cancer patients, the most common treatment is chemotherapy. Unfortunately, chemotherapy is often accompanied by a number of unwanted side effects, the most prevalent of which is nausea. While more effective drugs are being to reduce the symptoms of nausea, it remains a significant problem for those receiving chemotherapy. As many as 60% of chemotherapy patients report being nauseous after undergoing treatment.1 In fact, many cancer patients identify nausea as a main reason for being reluctant to begin chemotherapy and for discontinuing treatment. Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of acupressure in relieving nausea associated with pregnancy and surgery. In a new pilot study recently published in the journal Oncology Nursing Forum , scientists examined the use of finger acupressure in relieving the symptoms of nausea in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Although the study group was small, those receiving acupressure reported "significant differences" in nausea intensity and duration compared to those who did not.
