The History of the American Mathematical Society
It appears that the idea for a mathematical society in the United States came from a visit T S Fiske made to England where he visited Cambridge. He arrived with letters of introduction to Cayley Glaisher Forsyth and Darwin . Fiske writes:- Scientifically I benefited most from my contacts with Forsyth and from my reading with Dr H W Richmond , who consented to give me private lessons. However, from Dr Glaisher , who made me an intimate friend, who spent many an evening with me in heart to heard talks, who took me to meetings of the London Mathematical Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, and entertained me with gossip about scores of contemporary and earlier mathematicians, I gained more in a general way than from anyone else. Back in New York Fiske organised a meeting on 24 November 1888 to discuss creating the New York Mathematical Society. He invited to the meeting his fellow students Jacoby and Stabler, his professor from Columbia University J H Van Amringe , Professor Rees and a graduate student Maclay.

Linkin' Kennedy Legend: A number of amazing coincidences can be found between the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Example:
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both were shot in the head. Lincoln's secretary, Kennedy, warned him not to go to the theatre.
Kennedy's secretary, Lincoln, warned him not to go to Dallas. Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners. Both successors were named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their three names.

NBK Contents PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Every four years, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November, millions of Americans go to the polls to choose a new leader in a free and open ELECTION . The candidates, nominated during the preceding summer at the conventions of their respective POLITICAL PARTIES , have waged vigorous campaigns. Through the media of radio, television, newspapers, and magazines, they have made known their views on both national and international affairs and have become familiar faces to the people of the nation. On Inauguration Day, January 20, the successful candidate for the high office of president of the United States takes this oath of office: " I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." This the same oath that has been taken by every American president since George WASHINGTON . And yet, in the two centuries since the first president was inaugurated, the obligations and duties implied in the oath have changed. The key to the changes lies in the words, "the Office of the President." Exactly what is the office of the president? What was it originally intended to be? And what has it become?

in the United States during the second quarter of the 19th century, formed to oppose president Andrew JACKSON and the DEMOCRATIC PARTY . The term Whig came into common use in 1834, and persisted until the disintegration of the party after the presidential ELECTION of 1856. The anti-Jackson groups drew upon the political history of two revolutions, the American and 17th century English, for their name. In both cases the opposition to the king had called themselves Whigs. Now it was "King Andrew" Jackson who was the alleged tyrant. The Whigs' direct political antecedents were the National Republicans, the administration party during John Quincy ADAMS State sovereignty, not economic nationalism, was the idea which brought a significant addition to the ranks of those opposing Jackson. John C. CALHOUN Hard times following the panic of 1837 and the popularity of their candidate, Gen. William Henry HARRISON , brought the Whigs victory in 1840 over Jackson's successor, Martin VAN BUREN . The new Whig managers stole a turn from the Democrats by outdoing them in raucous electioneering during the "Log Cabin" campaignthe most tumultuous presidential campaign the nation had yet seen. (This was the formula for the only other Whig victory, that of Gen. Zachary
