Journal of the Imagination in Language Learning and Teaching
Volume VII 2002-2003 Lesson Plan Format
The lesson plan format includes basic information, multidimensional outcomes, and teaching/learning steps and procedures. LESSON PLAN FORMAT Basic Information: Field of Experience (theme):

Teaching/Learning Steps and Procedures: Personnalisation and Contextualisation:
    Main Activities:
    Reflection/Re-integration
The Basic information allows the teacher to immediately identify the theme, topic and materials. Outcomes are stated for each of the multidimensional syllabi. The Teaching/learning Steps and Procedures involve three components. The personalisation phase allows learners to consider their own experiences and attitudes about the subject under consideration. The contextualisation phase offers key information about the communicative situation and the nature of the text. Regarding the communicative situation students should know who is communicating with whom, for what reason, in what relationship (eg., mother-daughter, boss-employee, friend-friend). The nature of the text should be made clear by indicating certain key discourse characteristics (eg. poems may have uneven lines and atypical punctuation; letters usually have formulaic openings and closings). Teachers will also encourage learners to use their knowledge of similar texts from their mother tongue. Employed effectively, these two components, personalization and contextualisation, permit learners to anticipate new information.

The lesson plans have been aligned to the International Telecommunication Union Arts and Technology assessment package. Lesson plans may be altered to fit your needs and your resources. Viewers are introduced to the powwow as a cultural celebration and see samples of different dance styles. This 15-minute instructional program is targeted at fourth- and fifth-grade students. Teachers can use the program to help teach Native American studies as mandated. New Dawn of Tradition also supports a number of academic standards. Background Information The New Dawn of Tradition Powwow was held on the American Family Insurance grounds in Madison in August 1998. Its participants represented 11 tribes and bands of American Indians currently living in Wisconsin, plus the Sac and Fox (Meskwaki) tribe and the Mystery Lake (Mdewakanton) Dakota (also known as the Santee Sioux) tribe, which formerly resided in the land that became Wisconsin. The powwow was held to commemorate their history and celebrate their culture.

What is a Kinesthetic Learner? Howard Gardner's bodily kinesthetic way of teaching, learning, and knowing is the ability to use the physical movement and the wisdom of the body, or parts of the body, to create a product, solve a problem, or play a game. This intellectual way includes the ability to handle objects skillfully, act gracefully, and to apprehend directly the actions of other people or other objects. This way of learning is most evident in the young student who has a hard time sitting still; I often call these pupils my classroom movers. Older students may be good dancers or athletes, or particularly good at mimicking others. Athletes, surgeons, and craft people use all or part of their bodies in this highly skilled intelligence. Rationale for Movement in the classroom When we teach children through movement, we enhance overall learning capability. We learn through auditory, visual, and kinesthetic input. Movement uses all three of these modes: auditory - the dancer listens to the teacher or to an accompanying drum or music; visual - children observe and imitate the teacher, they watch other dancers and see spatial relationships; kinesthetic - the child develops a greater awareness of the body moving in both new and familiar ways. How do we learn about the world? How do we express who we are? Dance and movement develops these tools and leads to a child with greater self awareness and greater self confidence - a child who is better prepared to observe, analyze, communicate, collaborate and make decisions.
