About Domestic Violence Prevention
Domestic Violence Prevention Projects
Domestic violence and indigenous family violence are significant issues of justice and safety for the South Australian community. They have a profound impact on the health and wellbeing of communities, families and individuals, and have significant economic impact. Prevention of domestic violence and indigenous family violence is a key objective of the South Australian Government . Government has key leadership roles and responsibilities in the prevention of domestic and indigenous family violence. The State Government is committed to developing ways to assist and work with South Australian communities for the prevention of domestic violence and indigenous family violence. It is recognised that a whole-of-community approach, which reaches across governments and communities, is required to achieve this vision. The impact of domestic violence and indigenous family violence, and the range of sustained initiatives required to minimise their harmful effects and to work to prevent them, cut across the three tiers of government, and across the core business of a number of government and non-government portfolios, departments and agencies.

I would like to thank Drs Jo Richardson and Gene Feder for their help and advice.
Introduction For the purposes of this guidance, the term domestic violence is used to describe the physical, emotional and mental abuse of women by male partners or ex-partners. The impact of this violence is felt strongly, but not always explicitly, in every general practitioner's consulting room. The manner in which the general practitioner responds to a woman's first tentative attempt to seek help to change her situation can make an immense difference to that woman's life and those of her children (Richardson and Feder, 1997). The 1989 Home Office Research Study on Domestic Violence (Smith, 1989) and a subsequent editorial in the British Medical Journal (McIlwaine, 1989) highlighted the need for the medical profession to develop codes of good practice in relation to domestic violence. The 1992 report of the Victim Support Working Party on Domestic Violence made the same recommendation.

Referral for child protection investigation If it is believed that children are at risk, Child Protection Guidelines must be adhered to, and the need to follow these procedures should be discussed with the parent and their consent obtained, if possible. However, the interests of the child are paramount, and initiating child protection procedures is not conditional on obtaining consent. Record keeping 3.30 Extreme care needs to be taken with documenting domestic violence. In order to maintain confidentiality, any record of domestic violence should be kept separately from notes which may be held by the parents or which the perpetrator may have access to. 3.31 In General Practice it may be particularly important that any record of domestic violence can be seen within the context of the whole record, since this may be needed to understand, for example, a wider pattern of repeated consultations for depression, or of multiple problem, which may be connected to the violence

Attorney General Chandler launches "Work to End Domestic Violence Day"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Corey Bellamy
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Tuesday, October 3, 2000)As part of national Work to End Domestic Violence Day, Attorney General Ben Chandler is calling upon all Kentucky employers to help educate their workforce about domestic violence. " I urge all Kentucky businesses to work with their local domestic violence officials to ensure that all employees better understand the dynamics of domestic violence, "General Chandler said. Chandler called on all employers to recognize that many battered women are also working women. "All too often, these victims view their place of employment as their one safe haven, but all too frequently, the stalking, threats and violence follow them to work," Chandler said. "As your Attorney General, I urge all Kentucky employers to turn the workplace into a setting where their battered employees can get help." "My office is ready to work with you to plan employer-sponsored seminars and meetings to educate workers about domestic violence. Millions of women, men and children are abused nationwide. This violence costs employers every year in terms of decreased productivity and increased absenteeism and turnover rates. Together, we can work to eliminate the scourge of domestic violence."

The Harsh Reality
Are you or someone you know a victim of domestic violence? By national statistics, many women are:
  • Every 9 seconds a woman is physically assaulted. Between 4 million and 8 million women are battered each year by their significant other. 98 percent of the victims are women. Domestic violence occurs among all races, ages, religious, and socio-economic groups.
Patterns of Abusive Behavior Read the following list of questions. If you answer yes to some of them, you are probably in a relationship that involves domestic violence. If you want to speak with someone about your situation, you can contact the Purdue Police Department at (765) 494-8221 or the Greater Lafayette YWCA Domestic Violence and Intervention Program at (765) 423-1118 locally. Or, you can call toll-free nationally (888) 345-1118 to locate the women's shelter nearest you. Physical Abuse
  • Everyone argues or fights with their partner or spouse now and then. When you argue or fight at home, what happens? Do you ever change your behavior because you are afraid of the consequences of a fight?

NAAG Commemorates National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October, 2002 The National Association of Attorneys General joins the nation in commemorating October 2002 as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As the chief legal officers of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands, and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, Attorneys General are committed to ending domestic violence and helping women and children whose lives are devastated by violence. On October 15, NAAG will sponsor a Conference on Multidisciplinary Responses to Family Violence in Washington, D.C. The event will feature law enforcement officials, health care providers, faith-based organizations, and experts from several other disciplines who will address family violence from diverse perspectives. A number of my colleagues also are highlighting this important month with a number of initiatives and activities designed to increase public’s awareness in their own communities. Here’s just a sampling of some of these events:
  • Virginia - Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, Co-Convenor of NAAG’s Violence Against Women Committee, is participating in a month-long series of events to highlight Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, including a candlelight ceremony for victims and survivors of domestic violence; the Attorney General’s Advisory Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault’s Forum on the Health Care Community’’s Response to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault; the Silent Witness Virginia Public Awareness Campaign Against Domestic Violence; and the Attorney General’s Advisory Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault’s Community Forum on the Availability of Victim Services.
