LEA Policy Statement for Drug Education
The past decade has seen an increase in the prevalence of drug use in society. The acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skills which enables students to consider the effects of drugs on themselves and others is of vital importance. The ability to make informed and healthy decisions about the use of drugs should be part of a broad and balanced health education curriculum.

Teaching and Learning Programmes Educational Management and Change
A range of modules related to educational management and change are offered in various in-service courses for primary and secondary school teachers. These modules prepare teachers for the leadership and management aspects of the teaching role and to take up management roles in schools. Also, the Understanding Hong Kong Educational Context module is provided to prospective teachers to inform them about the education system and educational change. Members of the department also contribute to the development of school-based management and quality education in Hong Kong by supporting staff development programmes in local schools.
Guidance and Counselling
This programme area offers modules like Life skills, Productive Human Relationships in Schools and Guidance and Counselling to assist prospective and inservice teachers in becoming fully functioning persons that are able to establish positive relationships with school children and perform guidance duties in schools. This discipline has the broad aims of introducing students to different guidance and counselling perspectives and enhancing their competence in performing the roles and functions of school teachers. With these aims in mind, there are several specific areas which the discipline emphasizes: (1) counselling process and practice, (2) micro-counselling skills, (3) crisis intervention strategies, (4) whole-school approach to guidance, (5) home-school cooperation, (6) strategies for working with parents, and (7) implementation and evaluation of developmental guidance programmes (e.g. pupils' self-understanding, academic success and transitional adjustion, social relations).

Most recently I have worked as a consultant for the Center for Partnership Studies, helping to develop partnership curriculum guidelines as well as specific curriculum to be used in K-12 education. I also teach courses in “Ethics, Education and Society” at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. I have long been involved with educational issues as a parent, teacher, and social justice advocate. I have experience designing curriculum and teaching courses and workshops in various subjects, where I have given special attention to multicultural and gender issues and to uncovering the structural roots of racism and sexism. I have taught in inner city schools in Dayton, Ohio and Durham, NC. I am coeditor (with Sarah Pirtle) of the book, Partnership Education in Action: A Companion to Tomorrow’s Children
I have also worked as the coordinator of the Stanford Women’s Center and Director of Special Programs at a YWCA. I have served on various Boards in my community, including the Robeson Group, a multiracial educational equity advocacy group, which I helped found. I am currently a member of the Board of Directors of Springboard, a tutoring program for underserved middle and high school students. I also volunteer as the NJ state coordinator for Fairtest's Assessment Reform Network. I feel a moral obligation to oppose the standardized testing craze that is sweeping the country. I don’t believe that educational problems are largely technical problems that can be solved by experts; I think their solution requires a moral sensibility since, as I see it, teaching is first and foremost a moral activity.

This website is divided into a number of sections which will help you set up and manage your home-school agreement.
