42. American Economic History By Scott
AMERICAN economic history. Copyright 1997 2001. by Dr. Carole E. Scott. IntroductoryComments on the Study of economic history. History is important.
http://www.westga.edu/~cscott/history/
AMERICAN ECONOMIC HISTORY by Dr. Carole E. Scott This is a work in process. Chapters Introductory Comments on the Study of Economic History The Colonial Period Mercantilism and the American Revolution The Antebellum Period ... World War II and the Immediate Post War Period Introductory Comments on the Study of Economic History History is important. Those who are unaware of history are, nonetheless, vastly affected by it and doomed to repeat past mistakes. What is history? Is it what we learn when we memorize a list of Roman emperors? British kings? Presidents of the United States? Napoleon's battles? The most important German generals during World War II? The most important legislation passed by the U.S. Congress? Clearly, history is about more than any one of these things, or even all of them plus such pieces of economic history as what were the major products of the thirteen original American colonies and who were the leading American industries in the late nineteenth century. History includes everything that happened in the past. However, it is obvious that, even if we were able to find out everything that happened in the past, none of us could ever learn about more than an extremely small fraction of it. Even if we confine ourselves to our country's relatively short history and study only those things which are currently printed in books, you could read the rest of your life and not be able to read it all. Obviously, therefore, historians must specialize .( There is, however, a danger in this, as the conclusions you draw are affected by what part of the past you are aware of.)

The Boskin Commission's attack on the Consumer Price Index is weak on the merits and scary as policy
by Thomas I. Palley

"T HE one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it," Oscar Wilde said. In line with that aphorism, the Advisory Commission to Study the Consumer Price Index, chaired by Michael Boskin , has rewritten the economic history of the past twenty-five years. The Boskin Commission was formed at the behest of the Senate Finance Committee. Last December it released its long-awaited report on the CPI . The commission reported its conclusion that the CPI overstates the rate of cost-of-living inflation by 0.8 to 1.6 percentage points a year; its best estimate was that inflation is overstated by 1.1 percentage points. If cost-of-living inflation has been overstated, then the growth of the economy and real wages has been much higher than previously reported. The commission has thus solved the problem of stagnating wages, which is now revealed to be a mere fiction. Far from experiencing a "silent depression," the commission implicitly claims, American families have never had it so good.

    Russia's Economic Transitions

Nicolas Spulber Examines the three major transformations that the country underwent from the early 1860s to 2000. ‘The book is a massive undertaking, covering almost two centuries. Spulber is attempting to look at the three major transitions of Russian economic history - the decision to ‘modernize’ after the Crimean War, the Soviet industrialization drive and ensuing modernization of the Soviet Union, and the Russian transition after 1991. It is a monumental scholarly effort. No one else has tried such a project, so it will stand alone.’ Paul R. Gregory, University of Houston, Texas

Welcome to the Discipline of Economic History
The primary concern of Economic History within the Faculty is economic development in modern industrial economies during the past two centuries. Such analysis provides an understanding of the structural evolution and dynamics of change in the societies and economies of the Asia-Pacific region. It gives a critical perspective on past and present, and makes a contribution to a comprehension and formulation of contemporary political and economic policy, as well as business strategy and practice. Recent studies in business history have focussed on the development of the Asian firm and on technology transfer in Australia, work in social history has examined questions of ethnicity in Southeast Asia, and research in colonial history has investigated the background to present-day globalisation. There is an inherent breadth to the study of economic history at Sydney, ranging from the economic and social history of Europe to the role of government in economic development in Asia. In addition, there is a cross-methodological framework, and a capacity to draw on expertise from across the Faculty and the broader University - with a strong collaboration with the School of Asian Studies within the Faculty of Arts - which gives a richness and an interdisciplinary strength to what we do.
