History An introduction to the economic history of rural Gambia
The basic question of this article is, to what extent two centuries of widespread cash crops production and relations to the world economy have promoted an understanding of market economy in rural Gambia. Further, how have the relations been between the Gambian farmer and the world market? Related items Pages

The Gambia: The complexity of modernising the agricultural Sector in Africa , thesis in geography, University of Oslo. Traditional production and production systems
Originally, the slash-and-burn method of agriculture was predominant in sparsely populated Gambia. Besides the growth of indigenous crops such as sorghum, millet, fonio, rice and bambara groundnut (as opposed to the American groundnut grown today), the keeping of livestock was essential to rural households. Involvement in livestock and degree of sedentarisation varied between the different ethnic groups. Outside the various empires, farmers were fairly mobile, responding to attacks from slave raiders, ravaging warlords and shifting ecological circumstances. A general low population density implied that free land resources always were available. There was, on the other hand, a chronical labour shortage.

The Department of Economic History is one of 7 departments which together with the Graduate Business School form the School of Economics and Commercial Law. The original School of Economics was founded as a separate business school in 1923. It was incorporated into the university as part of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 1971. Economic History has existed as an independent university subject for almost 50 years. The subject has its roots in both political economics and political history. The founder of the subject in Sweden was Eli Heckscher. He argued that studies of economic history had to combine a knowledge of economic theory with methods of historic/descriptive research. The subject is practised by historians with an interest in economic theory and by economists with an interest in history.
      Courses in Economic History
The Department of Economic History offers under-graduate courses to suit the needs of a wide variety of students. We offer courses for under-graduate students at the School of Economics and Commercial Law as well as for students preparing for careers as history teachers. However, most of the department's resources are focused on non-degree courses in economic history. The courses are divided into four levels, each of which allows the student to earn 20 credits, the equivalent of one term full-time study.

Below the six full-fledged universities there are about 20 small and medium-sized university colleges spread in smaller communities outside the big cities. They do not have full research facilities and are not allowed to give postgraduate education and doctoral degrees. Some of these smaller university colleges have 10 000 to 12 000 students and are in a process of getting university status. They are, for example beginning to hire full professors. For a small country like Sweden, with 9 miljon inhabitants, the number of universities is maybe too large, but this has to do with the ambition to redistribute higher education over the whole country. The total number of students is about 250 000, of which roughly 30 % in the social science area. Some study on part time, which reduces the number of full-time equivalents somewhat. Almost 20 000 student go abroad each year to study. It is possible for the students to bring the study assistant privileges with them. This privilege means that a student receive, from the State, a rather small grant and a loan that has to be repaid. The rent of interest is fixed by the state, and the loan has to be payed back with instalments of 4 % of the income until all is payed back.
Today the university has about 100 departments and he number of undergraduate students is approximately 21 000 and the number of postgraduate students is about 2 600. The staff consists of about 4 000 and the number of professors is approaching 200.
