The chief purpose of this site is to answer "Where can I dance?" to attend an open event, to take a course, or. in some cases, join a troupe. My interest is in participatory dancing, though there are a few links here to performances, and also to a few musical bands that play for dances. Contents:

    Introduction
    ~~~No experience or partner is necessary!~~~ Folk Dancing is excellent for pleasurable fitness and a friendly sociable atmosphere. International Folk Dancing is very family oriented. Anyone from 5 to 90+ years of age can (and do!) participate and enjoy themselves. Canberra is Australia's National Capital, located about 300 km southwest of Sydney and about 100 km inland from the east coast.  It is a very beautiful city of approximately 300,000 people, with lots of bush and parks surrounding it and a large lake at its centre. We have a temperate climate with hot summers and frosts in winter. This means lots of blossoms and flowering bulbs in spring and gloriously coloured leaves on the trees in autumn.  One of our main festivals is Floriade, which is held during September/October.  There are spectacular displays of flowers and lots of accompanying artistic events. Canberra also hosts the National Folk Festival which runs for five days over Easter, every year. Approximately 40,000 people attend.
    Welcome! This page is called "Happy Feet" because we are folk dancers. We both enjoy several international styles, including Balkan folk dances (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Greek, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, etc.), Romanian, Hungarian, Israeli, Turkish, Armenian, French-Canadian, Cajun, Breton, Scottish, Irish, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Russian, and even Japanese.     International Folk Dancing is held at the Presbyterian Church (aren't you proud of me? I can spell it!) on 11th and G Streets in Arcata, California. Teaching on most nights begins at 7:30 P.M., and general dancing usually begins at 9:00 P.M.(or so). We ask for $2.00 at the door. If you are strapped for cash, or are uncertain, come in and have fun. If you have $2.00 worth of fun, pay us when you can. The money goes to rent the building, for upkeep on the equipment, and to pay a small amount to our teachers, who deserve a lot more.
    First Friday of the Month is an exception to the rule. It starts with finger food and music at 7:30 P.M., please bring food if you plan to eat any. General dancing usually begins around 8:00 P.M. or so. The music for the dance party is live, featuring two or more bands. We charge $3.00 at the door for these special nights to help pay for the rental of the hall, and for other events. After the bands perform, there is a general jam session where other musicians are welcome to come and play folk dance music. We dance until midnight, when we all either collapse or we're wired and we go somewhere else for hot chocolate or sodas. If you can, come visit!
    Folk Dancing
    Swarthmore has a wonderful folk dancing club unfortunately there is no official page for it, so I'm unable to link to it. Students can take social folk dancing at Swarthmore that's what got me started. Now, however, I intend to continue showing up for the classes even though I won't be getting credit anymore. Scottish Country Dancing is offered year-round on Thursdays for an hour and a half. It's taught by Terry, a wonderful instructor and quite a humorous instructor. . There are many folks in the Swarthmore area who enjoy Scottish, and there are several balls throughout the year which bring in people from the whole area. Swarthmore faculty also gets involved the Biology department shows up in full force! English country dancing is usually offered in the spring. English is less structured than Scottish, as it does not have "steps" that you have to know, but this also means that it's more flowing and lends itself more to spontaneous improvisation. This coming semester (Spring 1997), there will be Scottish on Thursdays and some odd combination of dancing styles on Tuesdays. I really don't know exactly what is going on yet!
