Dances and Folk Dances
We always look at dancers with some jealousy, their movements are so fluid and graceful, whether it be ballet, our favorite form of folk dancing or just dancing in a club. This page will explore some dances from around the world, mainly from places I have lived or visited. There is a complex tapestry of historical, religious and cultural influences in each of these. Each has its own magic, its own uniqueness, wound up inextricably with its own countries' history and culture.
Courtesy of Forever Tango
The Tango is just such a dance. Not really a folk dance, it originated in the seedier parts of Buenos Aires, Argentina . Because it focused on sensuality and its movements were often quite graphic, it was banned for being too obscene. Due to extensive porteno connections to Europe, the tango appeared in Paris and became quite popular, eventually being considered a high society dance. This popularity caused the tango be legalized again in Argentina. It is a passionate, sensual, fast-paced, romantic dance that is exciting to watch.
The lambada , which was popularized by the movie Dirty Dancing , is like the tango in some ways. The rythm itself is a fusion of a number of different styles and presumably originated in the Amazon. Like the tango it is sensual and very intense, though the music is very different. The tango has become much more lyrical and, perhaps due to its origins, is also much more melancholic. A more famous dance, also from Brasil, is Samba. Its rhythm is perhaps a bit different as it originates in southern Brasil. One of the main showcases of Samba is the annual carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.
