Extract from Teacher Training Agency requirements What we provide What we expect of you TTA requirements Trainees' Knowledge and Understanding of Mathematics All trainees enter a course of primary initial teacher training with a minimum qualification of GCSE Grade C (or its equivalent) in mathematics. However, the equivalence of such qualifications does not necessarily reflect a common range and depth of study. The mathematics qualifications held by trainees may not be sufficient to ensure they feel confident about, and are competent in, the mathematics they have studied and which they are required to teach. In relation to the mathematics set out in paragraph 13, as part of all courses, trainees must be given opportunities to: a. understand, and use correctly, mathematical terms which, in addition to those in the National Curriculum Mathematics Order, are necessary to enable trainees to be precise in their explanations to pupils, to discuss primary mathematics at a professional level, and to read inspection and classroom-focused research evidence with understanding b. identify how the different areas of mathematics relate to each other in order to provide coherence and progression in mathematics, and to make conceptual links across the subject and consider the implications of this for their teaching

NEW SOFTWARE SERIES PROVIDES TOOLS FOR TEACHING
THE WHOLE CLASS East Dorset, VT. July 8, 2002-
Classrooms equipped with a projector, a whiteboard, or even just a single computer can now take advantage of a new series of software designed just for them. Tool Factory, Inc. has launched five titles in its Whole Class Teaching Tools Series, and educators everywhere are eager to put them to use in their classrooms. The stand-out graphics, clear text, and demonstrative structure of the five CD-ROMs make them ideal for teaching the entire class around one interactive screen. The flagship products of the series focus on helping elementary and middle school students develop skills in both mathematics and art. Whole Class Number Connections Archie the Ant cheers on students as they make mathematical connections by completing equations and sequences. The entire class gets involved in altering the contents of four activity boxes, so that each one equals a number shown in a central oval. Teachers can guide their students as they work with numbers, picture sets, tens and units to complete addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations.

What Preparation Do Teachers Have for Teaching Mathematics? As shown by the international average at the bottom of Exhibit 6.1 , the majority of the eighth-grade students internationally were taught mathematics by teachers in their 30s and 40s. If there were a steady replenishing of the teaching force, one might expect approximately equivalent percentages of students taught by teachers in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. Very few countries, however, had a comparatively younger teaching force. Internationally on average, only 16 percent of students were taught by teachers younger than age 30. Although 21 percent of students internationally were taught by teachers age 50 or older, the teaching force was relatively older in a number of countries. Exhibit 6.2

Focus on Math
by Sabrina Tillman
April 2001 - Software/Courseware
Mathematics continues to be a tough subject, both to learn and to teach. This subject requires that students not only understand the fundamental concepts, but that they are also able to apply these rudimentary ideas to solve problems and progress to more advanced levels. This progression often requires that students receive extra assistance in comprehending and utilizing these concepts; however, with the number of students in each class continually increasing, tutoring students individually becomes a real challenge for instructors. In addition to receiving extra help from parents and peers, students may sharpen their math skills with a number of math software programs. This month's Focus On details mathematical solutions that cater to all levels, skills, languages and state standards. Assessing students' abilities and guiding them in the selection of appropriate study material is a time-consuming challenge for teachers. Luckily, certain educational software programs allow students to test their level of knowledge in a certain area, and provide level-appropriate lessons to help them learn concepts. Draft 2004 Mathematics Framework for NAEP
National Assessment Governing Board September 24, 2001
Tom Loveless
Senior Fellow Governmental Studies
Thank you for the opportunity to testify. I believe that the 2004 draft framework is seriously flawed. I urge you to reject it for four reasons. More items are needed in number and operations at grades 4 and 8. Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics your view

In response to that criticism, the NCTM moderated its position in the 2000 Principles and Standards for School Mathematics , declaring number and operations "the core of mathematics education for the elementary grades" (p. 32). The draft of the 2004 NAEP framework shows no corresponding moderation. The current NAEP framework (1996) recommends a 70% ceiling and 40% floor for the proportion of items assessing the number strand at fourth grade and a 60% ceiling and 25% floor at the eighth grade. These were reductions from the 1990 framework and were designed to "move NAEP assessments ever closer to the vision embodied in the NCTM curriculum Standards " (Mathematics Framework for the 1996 NAEP, p. 14).

How to prepare this preview lesson:
1. Recycle a small (2 1/2 oz), medium (4 oz) and large (6 oz) Gerber brand Baby Food Jar (1st, 2nd, and 3rd foods). Label them with masking tape A, B, and C, respectively. 2. Pour 2-4 pounds of lentils into a smooth-bottomed Job Box with 3 to 5 inch sides. Seal cracks (if any), with clear packaging tape to prevent lentil leaks. 3. Number index cards 1-12. Write each puzzle, listed below, on the front, with (answers) on the back. For children too young to write inequalities, underline which part contains the answer, asking them to write only that. Teach the inequality symbol by imagining a hungry alligator, whose mouth always opens toward the bigger lunch.
