67. History Of The Geo-Images Project
history of the Project The GeoImages project began be accessed through subject andregional lists, or panoramas of western North America and french polynesia.
http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/GeoImages/About_GeoImages.html
The Geo-Images Project The Geo-Images project was conceived as a way of making images (mostly photographs) that are useful in teaching geography more widely available. It was conceived, constructed, and is maintained by G. Donald Bain, in the Geography Computing Facility, University of California at Berkeley ( dbain@socrates.berkeley.edu The Problem
Most people teaching geography or other environmental subjects have their own collections of slides, frequently the product of years, or even decades, of travel and diligent work. Students agree that good pictures make a class come alive. But few of us are willing to loan our slides, even to our closest colleagues. Duplicate slides are never as good as the originals, and there is no practical way to include location and subject captions with the slides. Frequent use exposes a slide collection to possible damage or loss. So an individual's slide collection is really only accessible when he or she can personally present it. The Solution
Digital storage of photographic images, and their distribution over computer networks, solves many of these problems. Duplication is easy, cheap, and the duplicates are identical to the originals. Degradation and loss are no longer an issue. Captions can be stored in databases associated with the images, providing sorting and searching capabilities that would be almost impossible otherwise. Collections can be shared over the internet with colleagues, or with strangers. If you have an educational project that could make use of Geo-Images materials, please read the section on

PacELF, the first regional filariasis elimination programme, is a network Prehistoryof PacELF In french polynesia, the Ministry of Health and Institute Malarde
http://www.pacelf.org/about.html
A Brief History of PacELF
What is PacELF?
PacELF is the Pacific programme for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis. It was formed in 1999 to coordinate the control efforts in Pacific Island Countries (PICs), and works within the framework of the global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. PacELF, the first regional filariasis elimination programme, is a network of the twenty-two island countries and territories in the Pacific for the sole purpose of eliminating filariasis in the Pacific by the year 2010. The strategy for achieving this goal is annual mass drug administration (MDA) using diethylcarbamazine (DEC) with albendazole to stop transmission together with clinical management of infections to minimize pathodema in individuals already infected.
Pre-history of PacELF: Many people have done a substantial amount of work in several PICs over the last few decades to control and eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem. In the latter half of the 1990s, a number of events and activities brought LF to a higher profile. Several countries had been working more or less independently on LF control. In Fiji, the late Dr Mataika and his staff made substantial progress in mapping and instigating programs in areas of that country, while in Samoa, the Ministry of Health supported by WHO conducted annual mass drug administration with different drug regimens. In French Polynesia, the Ministry of Health and Institute Malarde, as a pioneer institute of Pacific filariasis, had also been very active in LF control and studies.

http://spicin.amsamoa.net/spicin_history.html
About SPICIN - Organization History In October, 1987, the South Pacific Islands Criminal Intelligence Network, SPICIN, was created by the 17 police executives of the South Pacific Chiefs of Police Conference (SPCPC) during the 16th Annual Conference hosted by the American Samoa Government Department of Public Safety as a direct result of growing crime problems in the Pacific and a weak information sharing process among the affected nations. Commissioner Saul stated:
"Experience has shown that the Pacific Island territories are used as transiting points for drug running to our larger neighbors of New Zealand and Australia. During the past decade, a number of major incidents are recorded on this. In fact, there currently is an operation going on in Vanuatu in this regard. There has always been a ready assistance forthcoming from our larger neighbors when hard intelligence has indicated a bilateral or multilateral crime problems. However, I am of the view that the time is fast approaching when there should be established a regional crime, drugs, intelligence unit to coordinate and disseminate information for unified action to combat what I see as increasing problems. I, therefore, suggest initial discussion in this form on location, staffing, funding, and terms of reference before approaching our respective governments to ask their approval for the establishment of such an organization and then assistance with accommodation and technology from our larger neighbors."

Historical Tahiti
Arioi The Arioi was a cult of performers of song dance and drama devoted to the god Oro. The Arioi travelled throughout the islands by large sailing canoes, staying at individual locations long enough to give performances. Practiced infanticide, performed explicitly sexual dances, had unrestricted access to local women. First missionary condemnation and then legislation was enacted banning the cult. The name survives in some dance routines. Marae and music Skin drums ( pahu ) part of normal marae equipment. Smaller types were struck with the hand, either singley or in ensembles, and the larger drums were struck with sticks. Human sacrifices were part of marae activities, and were announced by beating on a tall narrow drum called . After marae worship fell into disuse, this term was transferred to the hand-held slit drum introduced from Rarotonga in the early 1800s and used to accompany secular dance. General Comments on Vocal Styles Studies made by Bishop Museum expeditions in the 1930s and 1940s indicate two broad styles of song performance (1) rhythmic recitation with fast tempo and indefinite pitches (b) items of more definite pitch, having a small number of notes in a small range.

Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of French Polynesia (Introduction) French Polynesia is known for its spectacular nature. Razorsharp mountaintops, stunning turquoise lagoons, and abundance of beautiful flowers. Also below the water there is a natures paradise to be found in French Polynesia. However prepare for high costs (French Polynesia is 30 to 50% more expansive than most other South Pacific destinations) and the common language is French (you probably find that only some of the younger people will speaking english). For more information on French Polynesia, click on the button "About the Country" or for information on a specific island region, click on the map below on the island of your choice. Papeete is the capital of Tahiti, the largest island, nicknamed 'the island of love'. It is a visitor's first port of call because of the international airport of Tahiti-Faa'a which is located here. Moorea is the sister island, some 17kms north west of Papeete. Here the tranquil waters of Cooks Bay and Opunohu Bay lap at its majestic volcanic peaks which thrust into the sky.
