Postgraduate degrees and courses
The main aim of the postgraduate programme in Geology is to prepare students for careers in research or industry by in-depth pursuit of a selected group of topics within geological sciences. Individual courses have specific educational goals but all postgraduate programmes offer the following outcomes to students:
  • development of independent thinking and intellectual self-sufficiency
  • an ability to critically assess and synthesise geological literature and data
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues in geological sciences, an understanding of modern concepts, and an awareness of the research interface in selected fields.
  • an ability to communicate geological information effectively
  • increased practical skills in the field and/or the laboratory
B.Sc. Honours in Geology
This degree requires one further year of study after qualifying for B.Sc. with 108 points, and comprises two compulsory full year courses, GEOL 451 and GEOL 490, and six semester courses chosen from GEOL 473 - 485, with the approval of the Head of Department. A geology major consists of all highlighted classes (culminating with either Geo461 or Geo471) plus 2 electives. A cognate sequence in introductory Chemistry and one class of mathematics is also required. Additional calculus, physics, biology, and chemistry are recommended. Understanding that geology is a very diverse field we are flexible with the major. Geology majors usually work with the faculty to customize their major for graduate school or the career field. A geology minor consists of Geo111, 220, 233, and any three other geology classes.

Application of geologic principles to topical problems in environmental and resource geology. Topics include analysis of environmental issues such as earthquake disaster preparedness, landslides, land use, floods and human occupation, ground water withdrawal and contamination issues, volcanic and coastal hazards, and the response of landscapes and people to resource development (minerals/air/water/energy). Laboratories will be used to analyze and debate data relevant to environmental problems from a geologic perspective.

PHYS 0103: Physical Geology with Laboratory
PHYS 0104: Physical Geology A broad introductory survey of geology that focuses on the role of plate tectonic theory in providing a fundamental understanding of the Earth as a global system. The course also provides students with an introduction to scientific methodology and to the multifaceted interactions between science, technology and society. Topics to be covered include the minerals and rocks that make up the Earth's crust, the processes of weathering and erosion that shape the Earth's surface, the internal structure of the Earth, geological hazards, and energy and mineral resources. Students may receive credit for either PHYS 0103 or PHYS 0104, but not for both.
PHYS 0106: Historical Geology A survey of Earth history (with an emphasis on North America) and on the scientific principles on which that history has been based. The course also provides students with an introduction to scientific methodology and to the multifaceted interactions between science, technology and society. Topics to be covered include the interpretation of sedimentary rock sequences in terms of depositional environments, the history of life on Earth as inferred from the fossil record, and a synthesis of Earth history in terms of plate tectonics.
PHYS 0230: Earth and Space Sciences Seminar Offers students a chance to pursue topics in astronomy, geology, or related fields at a level beyond that of the introductory courses in those areas. One or more topics from a single discipline will serve as a focus for the course each semester. Topics will vary depending on the interests of the instructor and the students. Active student participation is required. May be repeated for credit with a different topic.

For their Environmental Geology final project, Kevin Spradley and Robert Fowler (pointing) discuss potential sanitary landfill sites in southern Pope County using criteria covered earlier in the course. Besides regular courses, some geology students elect to work on an individual research project (GEOL 4991-2, Special Problems in Geology). Some projects that have been done recently include two students who did geological evaluations of two different sites for coal mining permit applications, two students who analyzed steep slopes for bedrock stability, and two students who worked on a project to evaluate problems with certain aggregate stone in Arkansas.
  • GEOL 1004 Essentials of Earth Science

  • An introduction to the fundamental topics of earth science including physical and historical geology, oceanography, and meteorology. Laboratory exercises include the study of minerals, rocks, fossils, topographic and geologic maps, and oceanographic and meteorological phenomena. Laboratory work will stress the use of the scientific method of problem solving. Lecture three hours, laboratory three hours. $5 laboratory fee. Duplicate credit for GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will not be allowed. Elementary education majors who take both the GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will receive credit for GEOL 1004 only. All other majors who take both GEOL 1004 and GEOL 1014 will receive credit for only GEOL 1014 unless student has selected option (b) for completing the science area of the General Education requirements.

    Planet Earth
    The course offers students the opportunity to better understand and appreciate the evolution and internal functions of the Earth through geological time. An overview of minerals and rocks is followed by discussion of internal processes including igneous activity, earthquakes and magnetism. The origin of continents, ocean basins and large scale structures is presented by applying the concepts of plate tectonics.
    Geology majors are required to attend two Saturday field trips.

    GEL 105* Physical Geology
    Three one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. An introduction to college-level physical geology for students planning to major in Marine Science and Environmental Science or Environmental Education. Study of materials and processes which make up and shape the earth's surface, interior and the oceans. The laboratory work includes several field trips. This course is not open to students who have taken GEL 101
    Laboratory fee: $55.00.

    GEL 110* Dinosaurs and Humans
    This course is intended for non-science students as a liberal arts distribution (core) course in the sciences. It is an introduction to two world-dominating life forms. The nature, varieties, and evolution of dinosaurs will be studied, including the controversy on their extinction. Human evolution will be similarly investigated. Some study on the nature of fossils, the methods of historical geology, and biological evolution will be necessary. This perspective on human origins and evolution should help us to know who we are and clarify our relationship to other life forms on our planet.
