The course includes the study of soils, natural hazards, river flooding, landslides and debris flows, earthquakes, volcano eruption, coastal hazards, surface water and ground water use and pollution, wind erosion and desertification, solid waste management and pollution, mineral resources, energy resources (both fossil fuels and alternative energy sources), and geologic factors in urban and regional land-use planning. Fundamental geologic concepts such as plate tectonics, geologic time, and surficial processes are used as a basis for understanding a variety of natural geologic hazards including earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, and coastal erosion. Real-world examples of the interplay between human activities and the environment include soil and groundwater contamination, mineral and energy resource development, and threats to the earth's biodiversity. Also, the course takes a closer look at the geologic record of global change and the debate over global warming. This course is an interdisciplinary approach to environmental geosciences.     Geology Course List Geology 120 - Earth Systems (4) F and S. This course includes an introductory study of physical systems and historical processes that shape the surface of Earth. Topics include: 1) The pysical nature of Earth's surface based on composition of Earth materials and the forces that create landforms, 2) weather and climatic systems and their effect on the global distribution of soils and ecelogical communities, and 3) the oceans. D. van Dijk. 151 - Introduction to Geology (4) F and S. This course is a study of the materials and processes of Earth leading to a responsible Christian appreciation for and stewardship of Earth. Topics include minerals and rocks, Earth's interior and surface structure; surface processes producing landforms; geological time and principles for interpreting Earth history; mineral resources and fossil fuels; and geological hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides, and groundwater pollution. The first portion of this course traces the development of the study of Earth through the past few centuries, as geology became a true scientific discipline and as its practitioners became convinced of Earth's antiquity. Increasingly important now in our industrial society is the application of environmental and engineering geology. As such geology is the ideal subject to choose as part of a Dual Honours degree programme.     Reform of Introductory Geology Courses at ASU

    As part of ACEPT, geology faculty members are piloting new teaching techniques in several introductory (100 level) geology courses. These classes have traditionally consisted each week of 3 hours of lecture in a large classroom (~220 students) format and a two-hour laboratory (~25 students). We initiated our reform in the "lecture" part of the course, because it was most out of sync with modern pedagogy and is probably the most resistant the change. In the past, the lecture and tests emphasized memorization of facts, terms, and concepts. Patterns in Nature students examine crystals in igneous rock. Arizona Geology Virtual Tourist . We also invented several cooperative-learning activities, where student teams explore for petroleum or for groundwater contamination. Field trips and CD-ROM's provide other opportunities for students to actively observe geologic processes. Trish Dieck and Ganesh Gopal examine the cementation of sedimentary rocks.
